John Hitch

February 27, 1946 - May 6, 2025

Raleigh, North Carolina - John Hitch, the son of Dr. Joseph and Helen Hitch, was born Feb. 27, 1946. He attended Ravenscroft School and graduated from Broughton High School and the NC State School of Design. After serving for three years in the Navy, he worked as an architect for over 40 years, retiring as a partner in the firm Smith Sinnett Architecture. He enjoyed playing golf and the company of his fellow golfers at RGA.

John is survived by his wife Mary Sue, his daughter Jennifer Preston (Brian), his sons David and Bill, his grandsons Hunter Hitch and Luke Preston, his brother Dr. David Hitch, his nephew Charlie Hitch (Jaclyn), and his niece Kathy Rentz (Nathan). He was preceded in death by his grandson Owen Preston and his sister-in-law Melanie Hitch. The family will be forever grateful to Mario Shaw for caring for John with expertise, kindness, and compassion.

A memorial service will be held Tuesday, May 13, at 2:00 p.m. at the Church of the Good Shepherd.

The family requests that those wishing to make a memorial contribution consider the Ronald McDonald House of Durham, the Church of the Good Shepherd, or Transitions Life Care.

Brown-Wynne, 300 Saint Mary's Street, Raleigh is serving the Hitch family.
