Andrew Hunter Obituary

ANDREW DELEON HUNTER SR., of Sugar Land, TX, a devoted husband and father, gently and peacefully left this life and surrendered to the Lord's call on Friday, December 8, 2006, following a lengthy and courageous battle with Lou Gehrig's disease. Andrew was born on October 10, 1946, to Minda and George Hunter, Sr. He grew up on a farm in the rural area of Pamplico, SC. Andrew graduated with high honors in 1964 from Wilson Senior High School in Florence, SC. Andrew accepted Christ at the early age of 13, while he was a member of the Mill Branch AME Church, where he served as an usher. Prior to his death, he enjoyed active membership at the Perfecting Ministries AME Church in Sugar Land, TX. Andrew was an avid sports fan, especially of the LA Dodgers. He also enjoyed gardening, photography, and videography. In 1965 Andrew entered Morgan State College on an ROTC scholarship and graduated in 1969, with honors and a B.S. degree in Business Administration. At that time, he was also commissioned 2nd Lieutenant in the U.S. Army. He graduated with an MBA in 1971 from the University of Wisconsin. His military assignments included the Tank Automotive Command in Detroit, Michigan, the 2nd Infantry Division in South Korea; and the 7th Infantry Division at Fort Ord, CA, where he completed the remainder of his active military duty, Andrew retired from the Army as a Lieutenant Colonel. In 1972, Andrew married his soul mate, Phyllis Hess. They were blessed in 1976 with a son, Andrew II. For more than 25 years, Andrew worked for Kaiser Aluminum & Chemical Corporation in Oakland, CA, and in Houston, TX. In 2002, he retired from Kaiser as a Senior Tax Manager. He was preceded in death by his father, George Hunter, Sr.; sister, Carol Snyder; and his paternal and maternal grandparents: Adam and Minnie Hunter and Billy and Catherine Andrews, respectively. Andrew leaves to cherish his memory: his wife, Phyllis, of Sugar Land, TX, his son, Dr. Andrew Hunter II, of New York, NY; his mother: Minda Hunter, of Pamplico, SC; four brothers George W. Hunter Jr. (Carol), of Marietta, GA; James G. Hunter (Karen), of Somerset, NJ; Robert W. Hunter (Ruth), of Pamplico, SC; and Charles E. Hunter (Sherri), of Charlotte, NC; his sister Beverly Anderson, (Rick) of Lorton, VA; his father-in-law O.B. Hess and sister-in-law, Dietra Mottley, of Chicago, Illinois and a host of aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces, nephews, and friends. Funeral services will be held on Saturday, December 16, 2006, in Pamplico, South Carolina at the Mill Branch AME Church, located at 1917 North Old River Road, Pamplico, 29583. The church phone number is 843-493-2261. Arrangements are being handled by the McCoy & Harrison Funeral Home Inc., in Houston, TX and the Smith Funeral Home, 307 S. Johns St., Florence, SC 29506. Aunt Phyllis and Drew,

I am grateful to have had such a great uncle. He inspired me to be my very best. I know that Uncle Andrew is resting and at peace. However, that does not change the fact that he will be missed. One day we will all be together again.

In 1969, Andrew & I were assigned to the same suite/dorm at Wahsington U. We liked each other immediately since we were both from small Black colleges and had something to prove. Our favorite activity was making a late night run for rib tips. We pretended to study until someone shouted "tips" and we were off. Though we separated to go to different graduate programs, we continuously stayed in touch and I was extremely happy and honored to be asked to participate in his and Phyllis' wedding. I feel personally diminished these days. I only hope that all of us can live Andrew's example of a powerful but gentle spirit. I wish peace and understanding for Phyllis and Drew. You both have my love.

It may be a clice, but it is true that "A nicer man than Andrew you will not meet." I have such feelings for him, that I would even consider rooting for the LA Dodgers in 2007 in his honor (and I'm a die-hard Yankee). I have been thinking about him, and will continue to do so. I truly hope he has found the spiritual peace he so richly deserves.
