ESTHER RISEMAN Obituary

ESTHER COHEN RISEMAN, a wonderful, sweet, and caring sister, wife, aunt, and friend died January 7th, 2010, after a brief bout with pneumonia. She had just celebrated her 95th birthday the day before. She leaves behind several family members who have been touched throughout the years by her gentle ways. Esther is survived by her nieces and nephews, Debbie Goldstein of Kansas City, Mo., Stephen Goldstein of Sacramento, CA, Bill and Nancy Riseman of Dallas, Ronnie and Adrian Riseman of Dallas, Robert Shalette of Dallas; and Bill and Sarna Sunshine of Houston. She is also survived by numerous great and great-great nieces and nephews as well as her brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Saul and Rose Riseman of Dallas; Rosalie Goldstein of Kansas City, Mo., and brother-in-law, Sam Shalette of Dallas. She was predeased by her devoted and loving husband, Ben Riseman, her niece Ruthe Winegarten, and her three incredible sisters, Celia Lewin, Doris Cohen, and Rosa Shalette. Esther's favorite activities were those that involved her sisters. They either had lunch together or spoke every day. They made sure each had enough rye bread, corned beef and bagels for the week, and they reimbursed each other to the penny. In 2001, after the death of her husband, Esther moved to Houston to be closer to Sarna, Bill and their family. She came to every family activity, her quiet presence penetrated the hearts of all. She was an example of one who lived with dignity and courage. She will be greatly missed. The family gratefully acknowledges the compassionate care of Dr. Salimah Cumber, Mary Miller, and the entire staff of The Hampton at Tanglewood in Houston. In lieu of flowers and food, the family requests that donations be sent to the Anti Defamation League of Houston. A graveside service will be held at Hillcrest Memorial Park in Dallas at 3pm Sunday, January 10, 2010. Rabbi Jeremy Schneider of Temple Shalom officiating.

Dear Sarna,

What a sweet afternoon to spend with you remembering Aunt Esther. That Yom Kippur story was classic and one I plan on retelling for years to come. Thank you for calling and including me in the celebration of Esther's life -- she was one of a kind. I'm sure Uncle Ben was thrilled and couldn't wait to take her for dinner and dancing! Love, Debbie
