Frederick Lummis Obituary

FREDERICK RICE LUMMIS, JR., M.D., died the 13th of December 2007. He was born in Houston, Texas on the 15th of March, 1931 to Annette Gano Lummis and Frederick Rice Lummis, MD. Dr. Lummis attended H.I.S.D., the Episcopal High School (Virginia), Rice Institute, and the University of Texas Medical Branch in Galveston where he earned an M.D. degree and was elected to the Alpha Omega Alpha Honorary Medical Society. After an internship at the University of California (San Francisco), Dr. Lummis served in the U.S. Air Force as a general medical officer with the rank of Captain. After further post-graduate training at the Hermann Hospital(Houston) and the Lahey Clinic (Boston), in 1962 he entered the private practice of Internal Medicine and Gastroenterology at the Diagnostic Clinic of Houston, where he practiced until his retirement in 1990. He was active in the Harris County Medical Society, serving a term as its President, and in the Gulf Coast Regional Blood Center where he served as Board Chairman. He was a member of the American College of Physicians and a Fellow of the American College of Gastroenterology. Dr. Lummis was a trustee emeritus of the Houston Museum of Natural Science, the Musuem of Health and Medical Science, the Gulf Coast Regional Blood Center, the Episcopal High School (VA) and the Rice University. He is survived by his wife of 53 years, Marilyn Graves Lummis; four sons, David Rice Lummis and wife Susan Tuttle Lummis, Richard Gano Lummis and wife Page Kempner Lummis, Ghent Graves Lummis, and Marvin Lee Lummis and wife Mary (Betsy) Lummis; six grandchildren, David Rice Lummis, Jr., Helen May Lummis, Adelaide Emily Lummis, Harris Graves Lummis, Brooke Gano Lummis, Phoebe Elizabeth Lummis, and step granddaughter, Kelly Westover. Survivors also include his sister, Allene Lummis Russell and husband Paul S. Russell, M.D. of Boston; his brother, William Rice Lummis and wife Doris Allday Lummis and his brother-in-law, George Fitzgerald Neff, III and wife Elizabeth. His sister, the late Annette Lummis Neff, and sister-in-law, the late Frances Bradley Lummis, predeceased him. Friends are cordially invited to join the family for services to be conducted at Glenwood Cemetery, 2525 Washington Avenue in Houston, at eleven o'clock in the morning on Monday, the 17th of December, where Rev. Thomas J. Pace, D. Min., of St. Luke's United Methodist Church, will officiate. Immediately following the service, the family will receive friends at an adjacent venue situated near the interment site. In lieu of usual remembrances, memorial contributions in Dr. Lummis' name may be directed to the Museum of Health and Medical Science, 1515 Hermann Dr., Houston, TX, 77004; or to the charity of one's choice.
