J. David Obituary
J. PHILIP DAVID died on August 15, 2002. He was preceded in death by former wife, Ruth Brinkman and his son, Philip David. Mr. David was born in St. Albans, Vermont in 1918. His parents were Bessie Olmstead Newton David and Cornelius Henry David. He graduated from Bellows Free Academy in 1936 and from the Ohio State University in 1940 with a Bachelor of Science degree in Business. His first business association was with the Continental Illinois National Bank and Trust Company in Chicago. In September of 1941, he entered the Navy's V7 program. He was one of fifteen officers out of five hundred who were selected for training in Bomb Disposal, a volunteer group. After two tours of duty in Great Britain involving both liason and operations, he became Officer in Charge of the Navy's Bomb Disposal Organization in Washington DC. He closed that group's activities at the end of World War II as a Lieutenant Commander. In May of 1944, he married Ruth Carolyn Brinkman. They moved to Hinsdale, Illinois at the end of World War II. Subsequentially, they had two children, Lucinda and Philip. In 1945, Mr. David became associated with the City National Bank, and then, in 1949, he joined the investment banking firm of William Blair & Co. in Chicago. In 1954, the Davids moved to Dallas to represent William Blair & Co. Ruth died in 1957. In 1959, he married a widow by the name of Anne Lewis Gibbons. She had three children - William H. Gibbons, III, Lewis N. Gibbons, and Betty Gibbons. Joan P. David was born to this union in 1960. The Davids moved to Houston in 1963 when Mr. David became associated with Underwood Neuhaus & Company. He served that firm in various capacities including manager of the Institutional Department which embraced sales, research and trading. He was a Senior Vice President and Director. Since 1988, Mr. David has been associated with Kingston Financial Services, later known as Adell, Harriman, and Carpenter, a money management firm. He was Vice Chairman and a member of the Investment Committee and assisted in the marketing process. Mr. David has participated in the work of several organizations including the Union League Club, the American Red Cross, the Executives Club in Chicago, the American Cancer Society in Dallas and Houston, the Policy Board of Pride in America, and as a director of the Houstonian Estates. Club associations have included Northwood Country Club, the Dallas Club in Dallas, the Tejas Club, the Houston Club and the Houston Country Club in Houston as well as the Royal Porthcawl Golf Club in Porthcawl, Wales. A memorial service will be held on Monday August 19, 2002 at 2 o'clock in the afternoon at St. John the Divine Episcopal Church, 2450 River Oaks Blvd., with The Rev. Laurens A. Hall officiating.
