JOEL COOLIDGE Obituary

JOEL BOOTH COOLIDGE, 87, born on the 25th of December 1922, went on to his reward on Friday, the 12th of March, 2010. He was born in Fort Worth, Texas to Clarence Earle and Mary Booth Coolidge moved to Houston in 1924 and attended Woodrow Wilson Elementary, Lanier Junior High and Lamar High School Class of '39. He liked to say that he received his education at Texas A&M, class of '44 and went to "trade school" at the University of Texas where he graduated in 1949 with a law degree. Joel was a member of the Corps of Cadets at Texas A&M where he was in "D Troop Cavalry" of the Sul Ross Volunteers. He was also a member of Kappa Sigma Fraternity at the University of Texas.Joel maintained that the greatest adventure of his life was serving with the United States Army in World War II. He landed at Normandy several days after the initial invasion and commanded an M-8 assault tank, "El Diablo" as a member of Troop E, 18th Cavalry, Reconnaissance Squad Mechanized, during the Battle of the Bulge. Joel returned from Europe and was honorably discharged while at Fort Polk, training for an invasion of Japan.Joel began his career with his father in the firm of Coolidge & Coolidge until starting Urban & Coolidge in 1963. He practiced law until 2002 when his health forced him to retire. Joel was a member of the State Bar of Texas, Houston Bar Association, and American Bar Association; Fellow, Texas Bar Association. He was a founder and past president of the "C" Club and served as County Chairman for the Conservative Democratic Party for many years. Joel was a Past President of the Houston A&M Club. He served as PTO President at Briargrove Elementary and also as Founder and President of the Westheimer Independent School District. He was an officer at the Houston Yacht Club, and the Galveston Bay Cruising Association, member of Texas Off-Shore Racing Association and the Houston Racquet Club. He also enjoyed his weekly lunch with the Friday Club, Saturday Breakfast Club and the monthly gatherings of the Supper Club.As an accomplished sailor, Joel had many off-shore adventures including sailing from Spain to Maine, the "slide" down to Corpus Christi, the Vera Cruz Regatta and the Biloxi races where he won or placed in his favorite Cal-40. His most coveted wins were the Post and Chronicle trophies, still on display at the Houston Yacht Club. He also got into plenty of trouble with his long-time friend, Elbridge Gerry. After "swallowing the anchor" (to use a Joel-ism) he loved hunting at the Double Eagle and Middle Creek Ranches, creating memories to endure for years to come. Joel most enjoyed the first and second generation pigeon shoots at the Double Eagle where he regaled folks with tall tales, war stories of Herman the German, and his recitation of a slightly revised Robert W. Service poem. "Whispering Joe" was truly a character in the first degree and will be sorely missed.Joel was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Sue and his brothers-in-law Carl Robert Roemer and William G. O'Regan. He is survived by his daughters and sons-in-law, Ginger and Tim Kelley, their children Joel and Jack, and Gayle and Richard Hightower and their children, Jennifer and Wesley. He is also survived by his sister Marion O'Regan, his niece Daphne Walton and nephew Brian O'Regan. The family would like to sincerely thank all of Joel's care-givers at Treemont Health Care and Life Solutions Hospice Care. Special thanks to Ruthie Gates who has been by our side from our children to our parents, our forever friend. The memorial service is to be held at one o'clock in the afternoon on Tuesday, the 16th of March, in the Sanctuary of St. Luke's United Methodist Church, 3471 Westheimer Road in Houston, where Dr. Tom Pace, senior pastor is to officiate. In lieu of flowers and customary remembrances, please consider memorial contributions in Joel's name to the Texas A&M Foundation; St. Luke's United Methodist Church, P.O. One of the finest men I ever knew; true to his family, friends and partners. Everyone knew Joel, he was always fun to hangout with and to listent spin a yarn or two. While at the Double Eagle he would occasssionaly shoot a bird and be so surprised the damn thing fell from the sky. Ah' the golden BB he would say.

Ah' the golden Man we loved so dearly.

Joel was a good friend. We had many a good time, whether yacht racing on many boats, some of which we owned together; drinking whiskey and telling tales; or bird hunting or pigeon shooting at the Double Eagle Ranch. He will be missed by all.

Joel was easily the most joyful, exhuberant individual that I have ever met. He embraced life and was embraced back. I was priviledged to be a part of his and John Wright's crew for years of ocean racing. I laughed much and learned much; I shall miss him terribly.

Joe was heard to remark when asked how his sailboat trip was across the Atlantic from Spain to Galveston, “I’ve had more fun getting away from the dock with Elbridge.” And so it was.
They asked me to be in their wedding, and lucky for them that I had just met Barbara. I couldn’t find my suspenders for my tux, so she safety pinned my pants to the back of my shirt. She caught me just in time before I started down the aisle with my tux jacket unbuttoned. We told them years later.
Early on we lived about two blocks from Dot and Joe. We pulled young Eddie over for a visit in his red wagon. We had our boxer dog “Bow” along with us. Bow didn’t like being left outside with all of us in the Coolidges living room. He jumped right on in thru the screen door to join the party. That was the last time he was asked over.
Dot and Barb sat on the bow of our first boat for out first race. The Galveston Bay Cruising Association Race to Double Bayou, across Galveston Bay. They let the us know every time a boat went around the mark ahead of us. We were last. So far behind that we went up the wrong branch of the Bayou. Finally, when headed in the right direction we met the rest of the fleet coming back down to where we were to anchor for the night. We had missed the picnic. But we had peanut butter and crackers and Dot introduced us to putting a banana slice on top.
We shared so much as families. We shared ownership of the Sirocco and were successful at winning many races. We didn’t win any of the races to Vera Cruz, but oh! could those Mexicans throw a party. Mucha Fiesta!
Probably the best tale of all was when I hit the light house on the end of Welfare Island in the East River of New York. I bought a new boat built in Huntington, Long Island. Joe, the builder, and another long Islander made the first leg of the trip with me to Norfolk, VA. The boat was built like a boston whaler with an inner and outer hull with foam in between. Although there was a big gash in the bow, I backed her off the rocks and said “I’m headed for Texas.” Joe got home with plenty of time to embellish the story as only he could before I had a chance to give my side of the incident.
Our memories span so many, many years with visits at the Coolidges in Houston after we moved North, and their visits to our cabin on Madeline Island in Lake Superior.
So “Bon voyage, Joe” We’ll see you soon, and give our love to Dot.

Ginger and Gayle, what wonderful parents you had. I treasure all the fond memories and wild tales I was privileged to experience and hear of; as my mother has always said "never a dull moment". Dot and Barbara never had a chance, those two "Aggies" had overwhelming personalities. I loved your parents and I will always be grateful that I had a place in this circle of friends. Joe Coolidge meant more to me than any adult I knew outside my own folks. Love forever, Susi Gerry Wolfson

Dear Coolidges,

I'm so sorry for your loss, Joel was our dearest friend. I'm speaking for all the Gerry's. I remember the Liberty Cup Race, and how Mr. Coolidge had gone overboard right at the starting line while working the foredeck, but God Planted him back up on the boats transom and it was as if he never fell over. What an exciting time. It was one a many I enjoyed with Mr. Cooldge. I was so choked up yesterday with the wondeful service. I just needed some time alone to reflect on the great times Joel had with us sailing and the great friendship he had with us Gerry's.

God Bless him and I know he's real proud of the family he and Dot have left behind.

I was a law clerk and began my practice of law with Joel (Mr. Coolidge to me back then) in 1981. I have only fond memories of Joel and his stories of Herman the frozen German and PeeWee the cat. Joel mentored me by reminding me that sometimes you need to "rock back in your high back leather lawyer chair to think it through before making a decision".......advise that holds true today. My very best to Joel's family and friends as I know he will be missed.
