Joey Diaz Obituary

Joey Nicholas Diaz In loving memory of Joey Nicholas Diaz, 62, passed away on July 4th 2014. He was born March 25, 1952 in Lafayette, Louisiana to Vivian Broussard and Joe Diaz.
Growing up in Lake Charles, LA, Joey attended La Grange High School where he excelled in football as well as baseball. Joey went onto attend McNeese State University where his love for baseball flourished as well as being active in the Kappa Sigma Fraternity, pledge class 1970. Joey made sure that everything he did was done to the best of his ability; and lived life to the fullest. After college, Joey moved to Houston, where he met the love of his life Roxanne Chandler. They married on March 3, 1979, having many wonderful years together and welcomed their baby girl Reagan in 1991. His life was full of love and laughter, friends and family; Joey was the type of man that never met a stranger. His larger than life personality made him the success that he was and the great man that so many admired.
He is survived by: his loving wife, Roxanne Diaz, his daughter, Reagan Diaz, his mother, Vivian Cichowski, his father, Joe Diaz, his sisters Carmen Diaz, Carolyn Diaz and Elizabeth Brown, as well as many nieces and nephews. He worked for Galperti Inc. for 15 years as VP of Sales and prior to that worked for Coffer Industries for over 20 years. Joey was loved by all and will be missed dearly.
A celebration of Joey's life will be at 2:00 pm on Wednesday, July 9, 2014 in the Hunters Creek Chapel at Earthman Funeral Directors, 8303 Katy Freeway, Houston, TX 77024. Please wear purple and gold to the service, Geaux LSU.

I just heard of Joey's passing. I have been on vacation for quite sometime. I am so sorry for your loss. I dealt with Joey in business. I always enjoyed talking to him on the phone. We had the same sense of humor. He even flew out to Salt Lake once and I met him. He was a very good man.

Uncle Joey has been there through the biggest moments of my family's lives. We are still reeling from the shock and will miss him tremendously, especially his incredible sense of humor and the way his laughter lit up a room. My dad has one big personality and Joey could go toe to toe with him on everything, putting him in his place. Roxy and Reagan, we love you, we grieve with you, and we celebrate Joey's life with you.

Although I knew Joey only for a short time, he made such a wonderful impression as I was able to observe how awesome of a brother he was to his sister, Carolyn, during his daily visits to see her at the nursing home where I work. I will never forget how sweet and caring he was with Carolyn, and how lovingly he always spoke to us about his wife and daughter. May he rest in peace, and may Roxanne and Reagen find comfort in his everlasting memories. My thoughts are with them at this time.

Roxanne and Reagan, you have more family in mourning over your loss than you might know. My cousing Joey grew up with me and my brothers and sisters in Lake Charles. Many of us moved away with the military and work. It's sad that we lost touch with each other. But Joey's passing has rippled all the way to the Pacific Northwest. I and my family will continue to lift you both up in prayer for healing, strength and courage for the future.

What a wonderful memorial. Because of the large number of people at the service I was unable to stay to give my sentiments in person. My husband, John Rice, and I used to see Joey and Roxanne occasionally at El Matador. We knew Joey from golf at Sugar Creek. The memorial was a real tribute to his larger than life character. My prayers go to Roxanne and Reagan.

July 10, 2014

My condolences and prayers go out to his family and especially Roxanne and Reagen. I have known Joey since the 10th grade--he was always a great loyal friend-- he will be missed and always remembered by all who had the pleasure of knowing him. God Bless him and rest in peace.

From the time Joey and I met in early elementary one of his striking personality traits was treating everyone the same... and offering a kind word and a smile when he thought it was needed. At our last high school reunion poolside meet-and-greet in 2010, I was not surprised to see Joey making rounds, genuinely saying good to see you again, asking how life was going ~~ irregardless of where anyone came from or the changes in bodies, financial status, lifestyles that 40+ years had made. When he finally reached me in golf shirt and shorts, I joked that I was glad he wasn't so stuffy anymore and trying to outshine us, as I had recently come across a 4th or 5th grade class picture where he was wearing a sports coat and tie. He busted out in that big Joey grin, and said he had his mother to thank for that!! Pretty sure a lot of who Joey was we can thank his mother for. And after that, his wife and beloved daughter he proudly bragged about that night for changing his life in such positive ways. Our hearts go out to you today as you must say farewell for now, and smile through the tears that Joey was blessed with you to complete his earthly life and that he departed for the Other Side busy doing and sharing and without extended suffering so he could take his grin with him. Peace to you. Godspeed, Joey.

Joey was such a great friend to all of us who had the pleasure to know him - his laughter, sense of humor and loyal friendship touched all of us. I know that Joey and Bill (Toomey) are now together up in Heaven and if there is golf in Heaven - they are enjoying the best golf game of their lives. Joey will be surprised how vastly improved Bill's game is now:) I pray that God gives you peace and comfort, Roxie and Reagan, in your time of grief.

Years after high school I worked as a volunteer with his Mom Vivian, Getting to know her told me all I needed to know as to where Joey got his smile and sense of humor. What a great guy and In know his family and friends and all that know him will badly miss him.

Joey, As a classmate of 1970 I have to say you will be missed. I had met you at our class reunion and very much enjoyed the meeting. I hope you have found a better place even though you have left family and friends as a legacy of your kind actions to others. My condolences to those family and friends as we should remember his smile and kind manners. That is how I will remember this gator.

Although Joey and I only know each other from a work basis, I considered him among my good friends. Joey's never ending good humor was so contagious the he lifted my spirits just with his laugh. During our many talks we determined that we had many things in commend. The least of which was our attachment to Louisiana and the discussion of possible commend relatives.
I will miss seeing his smiling face.
May God keep him in his hand and give him all the gifts of heaven.
