NANCY SHANK Obituary

SHANK
NANCY HILLER SHANK was born on the 23rd of April 1958 and passed away on Wednesday, the 8th of December 2010. She was 52.
Nancy was born and raised in Shreveport, Louisiana, and attended Fair Park High School and graduated from Louisiana Tech in Ruston, Louisiana, where she was a member of Sigma Kappa sorority. In 1980 she moved to Houston to pursue her career in computer science.
Nancy was a member of the Blue Bird Circle serving on its board, an avid supporter of Episcopal High School, Kinkaid School, Duchesne Academy, and she chaired and worked on many charitable functions, and a member of St. John the Divine Episcopal Church. Nancy was very diligent about her exercise and workouts, and was a wonderful cook and loved to entertain and travel with her family.
She is survived by her husband, Daniel Frederick Shank, her daughter Meredith Burns Shank, her son John Hiller Shank and her mother-in-law, Maxine Shank. A brother Melvin Lester Derong and his wife Debbie, and their children Ryan, Amy and Wynn survive her as well. Nancy is also survived by numerous relatives and friends. Preceding her in death were her mother and father, Bennie Ryan Hiller and William Louis Hiller. She was an extraordinary and loving wife, mother and daughter.
Yesterday evening, family and friends gathered to share their remembrances of Nancy during a visitation at Geo. H. Lewis & Sons.
On Tuesday, the 14th of December, a funeral service honoring the life of Nancy Hiller Shank is to be conducted at eleven o'clock in the morning at The Church of St. John the Divine, 2450 River Oaks Boulevard in Houston, where The Rev. Dr. Laurens A. Hall, Rector, is to officiate.
The graveside service and interment is to follow, via an escorted cortege, at Glenwood Cemetery in Houston.
Honored to serve as casket bearers during the services are Harrison Ryan Stow, Ryan Lasater Derong, Wynn Traillour Derong, Ben Tucker, Christopher Miller Long, Rolla Lewis Long III, Ryan Bicknell, Eric Bicknell, Scott Bicknell and Todd Bicknell.
Immediately following the interment, all are invited to greet the family during a reception at a venue to be announced at the service.
In lieu of flowers and customary remembrances, the family requests with gratitude that memorial contributions in Nancy's name be directed to the Blue Bird Circle Clinic at Texas Children's Hospital, P.O. Box 300630, Houston, TX, 77230-0630.

I was so sorry to learn of Nancy's death in the newspaper. I worked with her many years ago at United Gas Pipe Line. I remember her as a kind and generous soul. We weren't close but always enjoyed working together; she was very easy to talk to. I remember she had a full length fur coat which she seldom got to wear, and cold Houston days made her happy to be able to bring it out.

I liked her very much and am sad she is not here with us.

My words are not sufficient for a time such as this, but His are...“For I know the plans I have for you,” declares the LORD, “plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.” Jer 29:11 (NIV).
I pray that God gives you peace, comfort and strength now and in the years to come. May the happy memories of a loving wife and mother sustain you.

I worked with Nancy many years ago at Texaco when we were both fresh out of college. We worked on an old Crude Oil Royalty Accounting System. When the beeper went off, you drove in at any hour of the night and looked at hex dumps. Nancy joined the project a year before me so she had that tiger by the tail! She was a rare person who could be up 24 hours straight & still look great. She was very smart but definitely not your computer geek! Nancy is one of those people you never forget. So much personality and so much fun. I am so sorry for your loss. I will keep your family in my prayers.

You are on my heart daily during this heartbreaking time. Nancy and I were close friends in jr. high and high school. We shared many classes, danceline, football games, clubs, and cafeteria work. We always reserved a whole page to sign each other's yearbook, roomed together at Tech & she served cake at my wedding. These memories are all precious to me, as Nancy will always be precious to me. I will always remember her kind heart & sense of humor. God will carry you all through this dark time. We are praying.

I knew Nancy through her volunteer work with the Blue Bird Circle Clinic of Pediatric Neurology at Texas Childrens Hospital. I met Nancy three years ago and quickly we learned we shared a few things in common. Our love for God, our family and humanity. I knew Nancy as a loving and caring person. I also, knew she liked reading but, the one book that will always have me think of her is, "90 Minutes in Heaven". She strongly suggested the book for spiritual reading. My heart aches for Nancy's family. I will keep you in my prayers.

My thoughts and prayers are with Nancy's family.

I will always remember Nancy from our high school days where we shared being co-editor of the yearbook our senior year as well as being co-valedictorians. My career recently moved me to the Houston area and I am so glad I reached out to Nancy. In July, we met over lunch to catch-up on our lives. She was very proud of her two children and spoke of their May trip to Europe to celebrate Meredith's high school graduation. She also spoke lovingly of Dan and their weekend trips to Galveston. In our last email exchange, we had planned to get together with our spouses.
