Nathan Waldman
01/17/1941 - 01/20/2024
Nathan Waldman, 83, passed away peacefully at home, surrounded by family, on the 20th day of January, 2024 in Houston, TX. The cause of death was metastatic melanoma. Nathan was born on January 17, 1941 in Lynn, Massachusetts to the late Gertrude Imber and Samuel Waldman. Nathan graduated from the University of Cincinnati in 1963 and from Virginia Polytechnic Institute in 1967 with a Ph.D. in Chemical Engineering. He worked for many years for Dow Chemical company in Midland, MI. In Houston in 1985, he founded an oilfield services company, Data Retrieval Corporation. Over the next 30 years, his invention, the SPIDR, tested oil and gas wells in every major oil producing region in the world. After selling the company to Halliburton he retired in 2015.
Beyond his professional accomplishments, Nathan was known for his intelligence, sense of humor, love of reading, and passion for world affairs. He loved the outdoors and walked 6 to 10 miles each day. Traveling was his favorite hobby; he traveled extensively through South America, Europe, Australia, Asia, Africa and the Middle East.
Nathan loved his family and is survived by his wife of almost 50 years, Mary, his brother, Jordan, sons Samuel and David, daughters-in-law Caolionn and Jennifer, and his five cherished grandchildren: Isaac, Max, Vance, Josh and Nora Kate.
A private graveside service was held on Wednesday, January 24. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to MD Anderson Cancer Center, P.O. My memory certainly isn't what it used to be, but I will never forget Nathan - his infectious smile, his generosity, and his passionate love of learning and appreciation of education. He was a very special person, who had a rare gift for making others (myself included) feel special. He made his mark. God bless him and his exceptional family......John Germann

Nathan was our neighbor growing up on E. Haley Street in Midland, Michigan. He was good friends with my parents. Back then, Gilligan“s Island was a hit tv show. We thought Nathan was a look-alike for Gilligan. Of course Nathan went off to do amazing things - like going to the University of Cincinnati for his doctorate. We thought he was cool.

I came to know Nathan and Mary as their sons' 11th-grade History teacher. On several occasions they caringly and generously invited me out to dinner to chat about "things." I found Nathan to be exceedingly kind, exceedingly thoughtful, and exceedingly interested in the world around him. He was a joy, and a very special person. And he afforded me a genuine privilege in getting to know him. He will be missed by those who knew him and by a world which needed him.

We are so sad about the loss of Nathan. It was always so wonderful to be greeted by his hello and huge smile-no matter if we were in the hall, at the board meeting or in the Happy Hour. I love hearing his stories about his and Mary's travels all over the world. He was a hero to all of us at the Houstonian Estates when he spent hundreds of hours updating our internet and video access. From what I understand he was a fixer in his industry for many things all over the world. We lost a truly great man last Saturday. Love, Cherrill
