Robert Dooling Obituary

Robert Joseph "Jay" Dooling
1945-2015
Robert Joseph "Jay" Dooling was born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania in 1945, the first surviving son of Alma and Joseph Dooling, both deceased in 2004. The family moved to Houston while Jay was still in grade school. He attended St Rose of Lima. During his teens, while a student at St Thomas High School, he was a long-time dancer on the Larry Kane Show, a popular Houston Saturday afternoon television show. He graduated from St Thomas in 1963 and from the University of Texas at Austin in 1967.
After serving in the Air Force Reserves and the Secret Service, he joined his father in the accounting firm of Dooling & Dooling, which after his father's retirement became Dooling & Mabe. During that time, he lived in La Porte, Texas, participated in sailing events, and in 1983, was named Yachtsman of the Year. Jay was given the Doc Kearns Humanitarian Award for taking care of Alzheimer's patient and dear friend, Pat Patton. He was also named the co-Grand Marshall of the St Patrick's parade in 2004, with co-Irish Aires DJ/producer, Pete Little.
He was at first a volunteer disc jockey and later producer of the Pacifica radio station show, Irish Aires, supporting and promoting Houston Celtic talent, culture, and music.
Jay is survived by his wife of 40 years, Bertha, his sister, Alma Jean, and his brother, Brian John.
Visitation will be held Monday, February 16, 2015 from 5-8pm, with a rosary beginning at 7pm, at Pat H. Foley Funeral Home. Services will be held Tuesday, February 17, 2015 at 12pm at St. Jerome Catholic Church, 8825 Kempwood, Houston 77080. Interment will follow at Earthman Resthaven Cemetery in Houston.

Jay, thank you for allowing me the privilege to be your final caregiver. The experiences and memories we shared during that much too short a time are priceless.

Jay was blessed with superior intelligence, compassion, a wonderful sense of humor, and most of all, an unfailing ability to know what was most important in his life. That life was much too short, and he will be forever missed by those who will always love and miss him.

Remembering all the wonderful dancing years. You always made your partner look wonderful, the way a great leader does. May you dance eternally in our memories.

Bertha our prayers are with you. Jay was a good friend at UT Austin. We roomed together and enjoyed sailing, cooking and school. His mashed potatoes mixed with hamburger was his best meal. He will be missed.

February 14, 2015

We have fond memories of the good times we had together with Jay both in Ireland and USA. Jay's love and knowledge of all things Irish, his appreciation of the culture and music, his desire to see peace and justice and his untiring efforts to throw himself fully into what was an all-consuming passion of his, inspired not only us but all who were touched by his presence and work.

When I think of Jay the first two words that come to mind are "Irish Music". We have enjoyed so much beautiful music together, We had plans to meet at NTIF next month. I will soak up as much music as I can for the both of us. My condolences to his family and loved ones. He will be missed. Sharon Breen
