Steve Montgomery Obituary

Steve Montgomery
07/10/1942 - 01/20/2023
Steve Montgomery was born on July 10, 1942, and went to his Heavenly Home early Friday morning, January 20, 2023, from recently diagnosed cancer. Steve was a proud Houstonian, husband, brother, father, teacher, mentor, and friend to many.
Born to Hilda and George Montgomery, Steve is survived by his wife Cynthia J. Raman, sister Ann Montgomery from Brenham, TX, son Todd and wife Ashley and granddaughters Alexis and Brinkley from Round Rock, TX, and son Terry and granddaughters Mayson, Montana, and Mykal from the Dallas, TX area.
Steve graduated from Houston Reagan High School and Sam Houston State University. He was one of the founders and president of the Epsilon Psi chapter of Sigma Chi, and was a Balfour Award winner for the State of Texas.
Serving his country in the U.S. Army, Steve achieved the rank of Captain, and served as General's Aide to Maj. Gen. Chester A. Dahlen, who helped to orchestrate San Antonio, Texas "HemisFair '68", the first officially designated international exposition in the Southwestern U.S. which changed the growth trajectory for San Antonio.
Steve began his career in commercial real estate in Houston with the Horne Company in 1969, helped "shape the skyline of Houston" through service to Gerald D. Hines Interests, and directed marketing responsibilities for One Shell Plaza, Two Shell Plaza, Pennzoil Place, Interfirst Plaza, and Chase Tower.
He founded Oncor International (formerly The Office Network, Inc.) beginning with just one firm in Houston and growing to 23 firms doing business in 37 U.S. and five European cities. Throughout his career, Steve was recognized as an expert in his field, representing clients in transactions in excess of 15 million square feet and earning respect, recognition, and awards from clients and contemporaries alike.
Some of the real estate awards Steve received were: Co-recipient of the Texas Association of Realtors Lone Star Award (1994) with partner Stewart Robinson for their participation in the sale of the CenterPoint Energy headquarters; Cushman Wakefield's Office Brokerage "Deal of the Year" (2004 and 2005); Co-recipient of NAIOP's "Deal of the Year" (2006) with partner Angus Hughes for their representation of the purchase of the 1100 Louisiana building and parking garage (2008).
Gifted with an incredible ability to pursue multiple business deals, projects, and passions simultaneously, those who knew him grew to understand his relentless approach in the pursuit of excellence. Always willing to help others, Steve was generous with his time, creativity, and ability to connect people. He played an active role in the growth, promotion, and development of the Dover Club, an exclusive support group of entrepreneurs and business owners. His vast network understands his principled dedication, incredible perseverance, and fierce loyalty to each person and every cause he was committed to.
Family was very important to Steve. He raised his two sons, Todd and Terry, to be similarly principled, driven, generous, and committed. He was very proud of their accomplishments. He and Cynthia have pursued multiple passions together over the last 40+ years, including Arabian cutting, working cows and dressage horses, longhorns, and ranch activities on their farm. Because of their involvement in competitive cutting and other discipline horse events, the farm became nationally respected as an Arabian cutting horse breeding and showing operation. They were winners of more than 10 national championships in a variety of disciplines, and IAHA recognized them twice as one of the "Top 25 Breeders" in the country.
What initially might have attracted people to Steve were his smiling eyes, hearty laugh, and love for his family; or meeting his friends from all walks of life; or understanding his love of our country; or perhaps his creative approach to problem-solving. But over time, everyone associated with Steve would know "2-3 things to be true ..."
Steve's memorial service will be held Saturday, February 25, at 11:00am at Brenham Memorial Chapel, 2300 Stringer Street, Brenham, Texas, 77833. Details for the continued Celebration of Steve's Life will be announced after the memorial service.
In lieu of flowers, memorial gifts can be made to St. Jude Research Children's Hospital, www.stjudes.org, and Shriners Children's Hospital, www.shinerschildrens.org

Cynthia, Todd and Terry - I'm very sorry about Steve's passing. He hired me right out of college as he was growing the Office Network. He was a great mentor and a great friend. I'll miss him. Prayers for you peace.
