Tommy Yates Obituary

Tommy "Squeaky" Yates
1943-2015
Our beloved Tommy Edward "Squeaky" Yates (72) of Spring, TX, born May 25, 1943 to George Edward and Alta Juanita Mayhew Yates, passed away surrounded by his loving family on October 31, 2015. A native of Baytown, Texas, Tommy graduated from Robert E. Lee HS. He proudly attended Wharton Junior College and graduated from Lamar University, both on football scholarships. While at Lamar, Tommy's football team won the Southland Conference Title, advancing to the Pecan Bowl in 1964, his senior year. Tommy met the love of his life, Carol Ross Haggart, at Lamar and they were married on December 29, 1965 spending close to 50 years together in wedded bliss. He was a wonderful and loving father to his two daughters, Traci and Marci. Tommy completed his Master of Education degree from Sam Houston State University in 1970. He lived his passion of teaching and coaching at the high school level for 31 years. A strong and faithful Christian, Tommy was an active servant leader in his church serving on the Vestry at Holy Comforter Episcopal Church (Spring) and St. Dunstan's Episcopal Church (Houston) where he was appointed Junior and Senior Warden. Tommy was also an active participant in the Lord of the Streets (LOTS) ministry at Trinity Episcopal Church for 17 years. Tommy loved the Lord and expressed that love through his generosity and the selfless way in which he served and cared for others, especially his friends and family. Tommy was unbelievably proud of all five of his grandchildren and faithfully attended nearly every event in which they participated. Tommy is preceded in death by his parents and his brother, Lanny Charles Yates. He is survived by his wife of almost 50 years, Carol, daughters and sons-in-law, Traci Diane and Richard Alan Schluter, Jr. of Spring, TX, and Marci Ross and Edward Lockwood "Ned" Moore, III of Houston, TX; grandchildren, Creighton, Reagan and Carleigh Schluter and Mary Kate and Emory Moore; and brother and sister-in-law George Riley and Linda Yates of Fairview, TX. The family will receive friends at Klein Funeral Home, 16131 Champion Forest Drive, on Thursday, November 5, 2015 from 5-8 p.m. Funeral services will be held at St. Dunstan's Episcopal Church on Friday, November 6, 2015 at 10:30 a.m. with the Rev. Robert P. Price officiating. Burial will follow at Forest Park Lawndale Cemetery. Serving as pallbearers are Harold "Buddy" Barber, Doug Cox, Ben Dyer, Rick Harris, Leighton Littlefield, and Delton Perkins. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to St. Dunstan's Episcopal Church, or Lord of the Streets (LOTS) Ministry.

Carol, I just learned of Tommy's passing today from my son, Trey Clark, who is the track coach at Lamar. It really hurt my heart to hear of your loss. My husband, Warren Clark, played with Tommy at Lamar. I had to smile at the remembrance of their advancing to the Pecan Bowl. I suppose they are reliving all those memories and every down they ever played from junior high through college. It always amazed me at the memory those guys had of every game. I know this is a very difficult time on all of you. Love to you and your girls. Cynthia Clark

Coach Yates was my line coach for 3 years at Lee High in the early 70s. We won district every year I was there & got to the quarterfinals my senior year.

Those were tough teams & anybody who played would tell you that Coach Yates was the heart of our success.

One story I remember well from that time:

Coach was not shy about getting in your face, hollering & screaming. If you goofed off or screwed up, you could expect a healthy dose of Coach Yates.

This changed a little my senior year. Some of the edge seemed to come off Coach a little bit. We finally figured out it was the birth of his daughter.

I can tell you, we were all thankful for the birth of that little girl!

Coach got more out of me that I ever thought possible. It's funny how often I've thought about those years playing football at Lee.

For me, Coach Yates was one of those mentor/teachers who have a positive impact on a young person's life. I'll never forget him.

God rest his soul.

So sad to hear about Tommy passing. We attended Wharton Jr. College together, played on the Pioneer football team together and were suite mates in Frankie Hall.
He was fun to be around and always smiling and bringing cheer to everyone. On the football field, he was a terror. He hustled more than anyone and although smaller in size, he was a dynamic force in the line. We had a very good team and played in the Hospitality Bowl in Gulf Port, MS. We came away with a victory and Tommy was part of the reason for that victory.
He will always be in my heart for the memories that we had together.

My condolences to the Yates family for your loss. I had the privilege of playing football for Coach Yates for three years at R.E. Lee High School in Houston. Coach Yates was a good man, a tough man and a big reason I was able to get a college education because of the football skills he taught me. When I learned of Coach Yates passing, it brought back a flood of memories. From getting off the bus from Rogers Junior High for my first spring practice to the last football game my senior year, Coach Yates was a big part of my life. Rest in peace Coach Yates.

My sincere sympathy to the Yates family. I remember Coach Yates from Lee High School in Houston 1967. He was my Driver's Ed instructor. He made it a great experience. May he rest in peace.

George, I saw with much sadness Tommy's obituary in the Houston Chronicle this morning. It brought back many memories of Tommy, you & me & our good & fun times together. Oh, how the time has gone by, but I can remember much of our times as if they were yesterday. I lost my younger brother too, so my sympathies are very much with you. RIP Tommy & God Speed George.
