Robert Houghland Obituary

Robert Porter Houghland
IDAHO FALLS - Robert Porter Houghland, 78, of Springfield, Idaho, passed away Monday, April 30, 2007, in Idaho Falls at the Eastern Idaho Regional Medical Center after suffering an aneurysm of the aorta on March 20, 2007.
Porter, son of Robert and Dorothy Houghland, was born in Pocatello, Idaho, on August 30, 1928. He attended Springfield and Aberdeen schools, graduating from Aberdeen High School in 1946. He served two years in the United States Army from 1950-1952. He was stationed at Fort Lewis, Wash., and Anchorage, Alaska, where he was a tank driver.
On August 28, 1951, he married Bonnie Pierce. Together they raised four children, Susan, John, and Jane, and their niece, Paula Norton. They lived in Springfield on the family farm and ranch until 1987, when they moved to Lake Havasu City, Ariz., after purchasing Diamond Mine Ice. In 1998, they sold Diamond Mine Ice and continued to live in Arizona and Idaho.
Porter and Bonnie divorced in 2004, after 53 years of marriage.
Porter had many interests in his life. He was ambitious, hard working, and loved a challenge. He especially loved horses and cattle and various agriculture ventures. Over the years he developed numerous businesses. He had a cattle feedlot, fish hatchery, meat packing plant, hog farm, alfalfa seed, race horses, quarter horses, range cattle, and an ice plant.
Porter will be remembered for his love of a good story, and was well known for telling a good tale.
Porter served as a director on the Aberdeen Canal Company for many years. He was also a director on the Idaho Beef Council, and was a lifelong member of the Idaho Cattlemen's Association. Porter was a member of the Jason Lee Memorial United Methodist Church in Blackfoot.
Porter is survived by his children, Susan (Danny) Mann of Pocatello, John (Rebecca) Houghland of Springfield, Jane (Jess) Garrett of Twin Falls and Paula (James) Clark of Rexburg; seven grandchildren, Audrey Houghland, Nick, Angela and Greg Mann, Emily, Lindsay, and Katie Clark; five great-grandchildren; and his sister, Charlotte (Thomas) Rosier of Yakima, Wash.

Dear Bonnie, Susan, John, Jane and Paula and families,
My thoughts are with you at this time of great loss. It is always difficult to lose a family member. I feel a great sadness at Porter's passing but know that we all must go through death--it is part of the great plan!! The hard part is that death is so final. It's the one thing in life where there is no second chance. Please accept my sincere sympathy and know that I grieve with you. Love to all. Aunt Madge Little
