1917 - 2018
On February 8, 2018, just 2 weeks after celebrating his 101st birthday, Franz (Red) Witte passed away peacefully at the Idaho State Veterans Home in Boise. He was born on January 23, 1917 in Weiser, Idaho, the 4th of 9 children. He was raised on the sheep ranch outside of Weiser that his father bought after immigrating from Germany in 1911. He served in the US Army from February 1945 until December of 1946 as a marine engineer in the Pacific.
When he returned to Weiser he married Wilma Blank on May 14, 1949. She brought with her 3 small children, who he adopted and loved and raised as his own. Franz Jr. was born in 1951.
Red worked at the Weiser Flour Mill for several years and retired from Ore-Ida Heinz foods in Ontario in 1980. After retirement he and Wilma moved to Boise where he helped his son Franz in his landscape nursery for the next 20-odd years. We didn't know all he did until he stopped coming in every day! He was tireless and patient. Until a year ago he grew a garden that fed the whole family and canned what was left.
Red is survived by son Franz Witte, Jr. (Vicki) of Boise; daughters Sherry Green of Aptos California and Elaine Newcombe (Richard) of Beatty Nevada; niece Fran Meunier (Boise); sister Genevieve Witte, Boise; grandchildren Seneca Hull (Phil), Joshua Witte, Chantel Hansen, Meagan Greiwe, Charles Holzer, Sierra Witte and Terra Witte; and 6 great grandchildren. He is preceded in death by his wife, Wilma; son Darwin Witte; son-in-law Jerry Green; brothers Casper, Oliver, Hank, and John Witte; sisters Thelma Witte, Regina Witte Broadbent, and Myrtle Witte.
The family would like to thank Riverside Rehabilitation and the staff at the Idaho State Veterans Home who did their best to make the end of his life as good as it could be.
Services will be held at Thomason Funeral Home in Weiser at 11:00 Thursday February 15 with a viewing at 10:00. In lieu of flowers the family requests donations to the Idaho State Veterans Home, 320 Collins Road in Boise 83702. Condolences may be sent to the family at www.lienkaemper-thomason.com
