Kenneth Lyon Obituary

Some people leave a positive imprint on those around them throughout their lives. Ken´s love for learning, science and people led him to many relationships where he always left people feeling like they had a special friend. Ken´s natural talents and intellect were impressive, and his raw talents were made valuable by his insightful perspective and his ability to get things done by working with people. Having Ken on your team usually meant you would have both a great experience and success. Raised in Gooding, Idaho, Ken lettered in four sports, with basketball being his best. Ken´s other love was music, from his days in a Barbershop Quartet to the many years in the St. John´s Choir as a tenor. Married to his high school sweetheart, Gayla, for 47 years, they traveled the world following his passion for engineering. With his two children, Kelly and Kirk, work took the family to Oklahoma, Spain, New Jersey, Illinois, and Delaware and back to Idaho. In Boise, Ken worked for Morrison Knudsen, and later went into business for himself, buying Idaho Chemical. Finally, Altair and nanotechnology took them to Reno as Ken explored the new world of material sciences. Ken also loved spending time with friends golfing, fishing and camping. Annual trips to the Henry´s Fork and many other pristine, beautiful places brought him a sense of peace, humility and camaraderie with close friends and family. The golf course brought into play everything he learned in AA, and he loved it for sharing time with friends and competing with himself. The many family members and close family friends were inspired by his love, leadership and care. The people from the Downtown Rotary Club, St. John´s Cathedral, AA, the Boise City Public Works Board, Ada County Republicans, his Democratic neighbors and many other groups that he loved being with made his life full of love, challenges and passion. He always has our unconditional love, and will be in our hearts forever. Services will be held at St. John´s Cathedral on 8th St., Wednesday Sept. 27 at 1:30 p.m. Donations in lieu of flowers may be made to Downtown Rotary Club, 802 W. Bannock, Boise, ID 83702. Services are under the direction of Bowman Funeral Parlor, Garden City.

Gayla and family....Rarely, am I at a loss for words, as you know. Right now I am just devastated and silent with the news of Kenny's passing. You know how I adored him and thought of you both as part of my Gooding family. I shall cherish our memories....I told Berniece that he had gone to be with the angels and his loved ones above....she was very sad and our tears were shared in remembering. She is not doing so great.....Kenny was always one of her favorites. God be with you all during this time of loss...My thoughts and prayers are with you always.....
My Love, Sharron

Ron and I always felt special when visiting with Ken. We will always remember the teasing and joking we enjoyed with him while we were working at the Country Club in Gooding. When we would fly to Reno each year for Hot August Nites we would either be on the same flight leaving or returning as Ken so we had a chance to catch up with life. He would always ask how things were with us and was very sincere. He truly made you feel special, he was an excellent listener. We will miss him, and our prayers and thoughts are with you Gayla, may God bless you and give you the comfort you require.

I remember Ken when he worked at MK. He was a very nice man and always had a smile on his face to greet people.

Kenny and I were childhood friends, classmates, and sports teammates for 8 years prior to our graduation from Gooding High School. He always made a concerted effort to protect the feelings and foster the happiness of all whom he came in contact with. Kenny’s demeanor and presence, during these years, has left a indelible impression on me, even after 48 years. My condolences to Gayla and all of Kenny’s family and friends.

I never met Ken--except through the delightful stories wife Gayla would share! I know he made a significant impression on his friends and fellows, and the young scientists and thinkers that he mentored, here and in Reno.

Although I knew Ken just a very short time, he was very much of a gentleman who I found to be a great Reno neighbor. I am very sorry for his departure and feel the loss and sadness for his family.

Ken had such a great sense of humor. I remember, while working with Ken at M-K, he said to me one day, "I was five minutes late this morning so I guess I have to make it up - by leaving 5 minutes early."

When Ken was considering employment at MK all who interview him gave a positive response and Bill Dyer captured it all when he said "Ken is the kind of person people would like to do business with" I later concluded that anyone would feel good in his company.

When Ken was considering employment at MK, all those who interviewd him could agree with Bill Dyer's assessment that "Ken was a person people would like to do business with". We all later would extend that to any encounter in life.
