John Graub Obituary

John W. Graub II

63, died peacefully in his Indianapolis home on October 14, 2012.

John was born on November 18, 1949 in Indianapolis to John W. Graub and Rowena "Sunny" South. He was a beloved son, father, and friend.

John attended Speedway High School. He went on to earn a bachelor's degree from the Kelley School of Business at Indiana University Bloomington, and a law degree at IUPUI. John was a proud member of the Sigma Alpha Epsilon fraternity during his years in Bloomington, and maintained strong friendships with fraternity brothers throughout his entire life.

John was a long-time member of the Indianapolis Bar Association and the Indianapolis Athletic Club. He was a partner for over 25 years at Rubin & Levin P.C. and afterwards spent several years associated with Hostetler & Kowalik P.C. He was a disciplined and respected bankruptcy lawyer and took pride and honor in his work.

John loved his family and was affectionately known as "Papa John" to his grandchildren. Nothing made John happier than to have his children and grandchildren surrounding him at his beloved home, spending lazy days swimming in the pool and grilling ribs for everyone to enjoy.

John was also a caring and committed friend. When able, he was quick to help a friend in need and was a trusted confidant.

John is survived by his loving children Ariana (Brett) Spitzer; Sarah (Tedd) Grain; and John Nicholas Graub. He is also survived by six grandchildren: Audrey (5), Brock (3) and Quinn (1) Spitzer; and Idalina (3), Stella (1) and Luca (1) Grain.

Family and friends will gather at Leppert Mortuary, Nora Chapel on Friday, October 19th from 4 to 6 p.m. Memorial services will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Saturday, October 20th in the Robertson Chapel at St. Luke's United Methodist Church.

Dear Anna, Sarah, and Nick

I want you to know that you all were very special to your dad. Every time we spoke he always spoke of his children and grandchildren. He was very proud of you.
I am very lucky to have had the privilege of getting to know your dad. He was a wonderful guy! Your dad was the kind of guy who would help anyone out. I will cherish our many conversations that I had with him. I will never know what "Keep Your Dobbers Up" means, but when I think of your dad I think of those words. He always made me smile!
God Bless your family!

John--We all loved you and you will be sorely missed. What a legacy you left behind! You and Mary did a great job with your children--all such amazing young adults, who are both gifted and grounded. I am so sad that you left us so soon, but I treasure every memory I have had with you---introducing you to Mary, the Race parties at Norwaldo, the Blizzard, poolside at Round Hill Rd, Law School (you with the Italian suits), you cruising up behind me in the Porsche Targa when I was riding my bike on College(I could hear you coming a mile away), but even more so, watching you and Mary as young parents. We all have been so sad about this, but today I am smiling thinking of the times we spent together and of the great man that you were. Save a place for me up there! Like everyone else, I want to be near you because I know that you will help me, and that it will be both interesting and fun up there. Thank you for the privilege of knowing you, being your friend, and for the incredible legacy you left behind. I know that you were with us on Saturday, and what a day it was--your children and Mary and friends laughed and cried, and the love and talent in that room was omnipresent and overwhelming. Love You Man. Leah

Dear Anna Sarah and Nick --

Bill, AJ and I will alway remember John's generous hospitality -- he opened his home whenever we came to town. I have many memories of being engulfed by his warm hugs and hearing his words of advice. He left this world too early....but his spirit sure lives on in you and your kids.

Oh how sad I was to hear this news. I worked with John for several years and it was no secret how much he cared about his family and friends. I believe he has been reunited in heaven with his good friend Neil Shook. God just inherited another great man! My heart and prayers go out to the Graub family as the hardest days are yet to come. Rest in peace, John, until we meet again!

Anna, Sarah, Nick,
Whatever, whenever -- I am here for you and always will be. My heart aches. God's peace as you move through this.

And sweet John, thank you for providing a compass for me in so many ways. I was blessed to have known you. And yes, I have fretted and 'festered' as you would say -- all week. I miss you.

My heart breaks to hear this news. We worked together at R & L for a long time, and I have seen him every few years since then. He always had that twinkle in his eye, the same big smile on his face and the warmest and most genuine hug I have ever received. John was such a special man. He will be forever missed. Rest in peace, John.

Dad, you were a friend to every person you met and took those under your wing that were in need. You provided a strong moral compass for me, Anna and Nick, yet still accepted and respected us unconditionally when we made choices that were different than those you would have made. Just like Grandma Graub, you had a hug strong enough to break a few ribs. I miss you so much. I love you.

I am sad to hear of John's passing. As little kids, "Johnny" and I were buddies, as our parents were friends and our families would get together from time to time. I remember John as a creative and active and fun friend to be with. I still remember how he and his Dad would do tap dance routines together at church and other places. And I remember John doing magic tricks and playing music and being a real performer. I didn't have the pleasure of knowing John as a "grown-up", but I see that he has lived a good life and enjoyed his family above all else. I am sending thoughts of loving kindness your way at this difficult time, and I wish for you comfort and rest.

John was the classic father-in-law. From his De Niro impersonation from Parenthood, admonishing me about the "circle of trust" to the few but strong words of advice regarding taking care of his daughter, he made an impression on this son-in-law. He was a master of the barbecue and his perfect lawn was to be envied. His true accomplishment, however, was providing a loving and safe environment for his kids as they grew up.
Thank you John for your influence on my wife Sarah, who was shaped by your gift of a happy childhood into the woman I love. Your legacy will continue as we raise our children, hoping to provide the same loving environment for them. You are missed.
