Steven Clark Obituary

Dr. Steven Allen Clark

On March 7, 2021, Dr. Steven Allen Clark, beloved father, devoted husband, brother, and friend to all, passed away suddenly. He was 67 years old.

Steve was born in March 1953, in Cincinnati, Ohio, to Ruth Middleton Clark and Norman Clark. He grew up in Ohio, Michigan, and Indiana with his younger sister, Ann, and attended Southport High School, graduating in 1971. Later, he graduated from Purdue University and Indiana University Medical School, where he met the love of his life, Diana Dunn. They married in September 1978 in Indianapolis.

Dr. Clark was well-known across the Franciscan Health practice as a warm and intelligent physician. In December 2020, he retired, looking forward to spending more time with family, relaxing in Florida, and cycling across the US with his wife. Steve was honored as the distinguished physician 2014.

Steve was a steadfast and generous husband and father. He and Diana raised four successful and equally generous sons, Jonathan, Michael, Daniel, and Benjamin. Steve looked forward to any moment he could spend with his grandchildren: Cole, Henry, William, Victoria, Catherine, and Gwendolyn. Grandpa Steve could always be expected to give chase playing tag around the house and serve lavish scoops (and seconds and thirds) of ice cream.

Steve will be remembered for being as big-hearted as he was efficient. Friends, colleagues, and family could always count on him for a helping hand. He would, quite literally, bike or drive cross-country to be of service to a loved one. As an avid cyclist, he and Diana traversed Europe and the United States, exploring unique locations as they biked miles a day, and delighted in finding a good cup of bold coffee at a café. If Steve had any vices, it would be his love of coffee and chocolate.

Steve is preceded in death by his mother and father. He is survived by his wife of 42 years, Diana; children Jonathan (Jennifer), Michael (Emily), Daniel (Amanda), Benjamin (Lyndsie); sister Ann Kunz (Trey); and his six grandchildren.

In lieu of flowers, the family would appreciate donations to the Indiana University Foundation - School of Medicine, Class of 1979 Scholarship Fund (P370006925) in the name of Dr. Steven Clark. MyIU.org/gift. Steve's family will have a private celebration of life. Arrangements entrusted to Singleton and Herr Mortuary and Memorial Center.

My condolences Diana and family. My just saw this unfortunate news. Steve and I were best friends in high school, we lived a block away from each other. You could find him at our house or I was at their house. We did everything together, including rebuilding the engine on his red Ford Falcon in their backyard. We share the same birthday, month, day and year. Everyone thought we were brothers since we looked almost like twins. We even have the same last name except mine has an e at the end. O the memories I have of our time together. A great friend gone way too soon!!

Sincerest condolences on the loss of such a kind and gentle soul. All the cytotechs at Wishard loved Dr. Clark. We all have fond memories of the Campbell's Soup gang dining at your house with all of our kids. What a loss to the pathology community.

So sorry for the family. I grew up with Steve and Ann on Walnut Street in Southport. He was my best friend for many years until I left the area in 1974 and lost track of the family. He and I had many adventures through the years growing up. I'm truly sorry I didn't stay in touch.

Dear Diane and Sons, Steve brought me to Indy 33 years ago when he was Director of Cytopathology at University Hospital. I'll always va;ue his gentle mentoring when I, a newbie right out of fellowship, started trying to never be wrong. His cheerfulness and team spirit still influence the Division today. I pray that you will find consolationand hope in this sudden loss.

My sincere sympathies go to Diana and his entire family. I worked with Dr. Clark at St. Francis for many years and always enjoyed going with him as part of a lab team to do CAP inspections. He always wanted the inspections to be educational, not punitive. I also worked with him when he became the medical director of the Point of Care Testing department. In that roll, I found him to be logical, fair and a resource full of knowledge. He will be greatly missed by everyone who knew him.

So many good memories. Always enjoyed his friendship. Will never forget how much he laughed at Jerry's birthday with the belly dancer. Will always remember that laugh.

I worked at St Francis is where I first met Dr. Clark doing CT studies requiring biopsy. Then I met Dr Clark outside the working fence in the biking community. We always seemed to have great conversation. What a guy. You would of never known he was a physician because everyone is the same no matter the playing field is. Thank you Dr Clark and God bless.

Steve was my first mentor as a pathology resident. He was kind and generous with his time. We shared a secret love of hostess "snowball" cupcakes. Every day he and I would split a pack from the vending machine. During the "Snowball" moments he taught me cytology which became my career. Much more, though, he was a kind, caring man for whom I have always had great respect. Please accept my condolences to the entire family. I know you were dear to him .

"Dr. Clark" was truly a friend during his rotations as a pathologist at Hancock Regional Hospital. We shared a number of conversations about our shared Christian faith. He was a reliable lab consultant and personal encourager. We talked often about our families. May Diane and the children take comfort in a life well lived.

Steve was my friend and colleague for the past 20 years at St. Francis. Over coffee we discussed life and his love of biking and many other things. He mentored by son Matt, then in high school and on his journey to anatomy instructor at USC, by letting him follow him from the surgical suites to the microscope in diagnosing disease or health. He helped us establish a research track for urine pesticide testing and it was he who called me with my own prostate cancer diagnosis, at a time when surgery saved my life. His compassion on that phone call was much appreciated. Few of us combine high standards of clinical acumen, enviable intellect with such a kind spirit as Steve. He has been a model for all physicians and staff of what we might aspire to be in our workplace and in our home.
