Is she w you Dad? Have you found eachother? Tell my sissy I miss her so much. If she were here she would have asked me if I knew it was your death day tomorrow. I always knew but I would squash the subject and say I don’t want to remember those dates like you do. Now I’ll never forget her dates. They’re etched painfully in my heart forever.
I love you and hope you’re both at peace,

We continue to make respectful reference to Cookie's, Daddy Wags and his dress rehearsal "wake" years before his untimely death. The old Irish saying that "you're never really dead until the last person who remembers you dies" certaily applies here. We ALL miss Daddy Wags, a lot.

Dear Marion and Family,
I'm posting this message nearly two years after Wags died.He was truly the best at whatever he did. He made lasting impressions on us all. He sent me a post card from Ireland in January just before he came home ill. He always took that extra time to remember friends.
All the "boys from Boston" miss him dearly.

Every time I used to pass the now silent thatched cottage at Beltra, my heart lifted in expectation of you bringing it to life if you were coming, or of the robust welcome if you were here in Ireland. Now its soul is departed. No cars gather outside. No horns of passing traffic sound their greeting. I fear the daffodils I planted for you will find no warmth radiating outwards, for without Wags here there will be no spring.
I do not want to admit that Daddy Wags has new places to inspire with his generousity of spirit, his ability to transform black & white into vivid colour, to awake slumbering joy in people, to enlarge small views into broad landscapes, and to banish meagreness and small mindedness.
Wags, we miss your abraisive humour that rubs away our smug veneer to reveal our neglected smile, your intolerance of petty mindedness, your ability to describe us in ways that from anyone else would enrage us but from only you we accept as warm friendship, and that you have brought the very best of the U.S.A. into this quiet, water'd land.

I can't express in words the great honor I feel at spending time with you during your final, courageous battle. I will never forget the compassion you showed for others despite the pain you were suffering yourself.I will never forget the hundreds of friends from all walks of life who came to visit you. I will never forget your family, and will remind them often of the many times you told me how much you loved them, and how proud you were of them. I will never forget your dedication to your country and your beloved Corps.I will never forget the smile on your face when you spoke of your beautiful Irish home. I will never forget your faith in Jesus, the Blessed Mother, and your Angels. I will never forget how blessed I am to have had you for a friend. My life is so much richer because you were a part of it. I will carry the memory of your spirit in my heart always. I will NEVER forget you Wags!!

November 10th. The Marine Corps birthday. I was not a Marine or ever in the military. I did not know the significance of that date. I met Jimmy Wagner. Now I'll never forget November 10th or "Wags." I was always amazed at the diversity Wags' Marine Corps birthday party attracted. "Big" people. "Little" people. Military people. Non-military people. Army, Navy, Air Force, Marines. Grunts and officers. Good conduct medal recipients to Medal of Honor recipients. From Wags I learned one "received" the Medal of Honor, one did not "win" the Medal of Honor or any military medal of distinction. I learned a great deal from Wags, mostly stuff one can't talk about publically. I also learned what it meant to be truly generous. I learned one should never pay lip service to life. Live it to the fullest. Never overlook the people we meet along the way, especially the ones who need a helping hand. Jimmy Wagner may not have been the epitome of a gentleman. He was much more. He was a human being.

As I looked at the faces of hundreds that came to say good bye to you, my heart sadden more and more. I continuously thought to myself, God he was loved by so many. Loved by numerous friends. Loved by neighbors. Loved by comrades. Loved by family members. Loved by me. You will be surely missed. Your time on this earth will never be forgotten.
How will I ever thank you for everything you have done for me? You gave me Joyce, Marion & Jaime the three sisters I never had. The three best friends I will always have. You were my best friends’ “Daddy Wags”. You taught me to love this country from the time I was small. You took me places I thought I’d never see. You shared a pint in the pubs of Ireland with me. You were there when I needed you. You were a father to me in many ways. I will always love and respect you Daddy Wags. I will miss you until the day I see you again.
To Joyce:
I know you are just as sad for Catherine as you are for yourself. Be thankful for the time they had together, the time some never share. I know you loved your Dad and always will. Some day you will look back and realize you gave him the best gift of all. A gift no one could ever replace.
To Marion:
I know you are missing him terribly. He loved you and you loved him. That was known by all. Even though he tortured you at times with his silly requests, I know you wouldn’t have traded him in for the world. You are lucky to have had him as your dad and he’s lucky to have had you as his daughter. You made a great team…Wags & Wags Forever! I love you Mar, hang in there. I still need you.
To Jaime:
You are a truly good hearted person. One of the best I’ve ever known. Not many people would have done what you did for your dad over the last nine months. It just goes to show, you loved him unconditionally. He was proud of you and loved you very much (he told me so in Ireland). Stay strong and take care of yourself.

While attending a Marine Corps Birthday church service at Washington National Cathedral on 2 Novemeber I heard one of the Navy Chaplains offer the following comment regarding Marines who had passed away..."Although they no longer live with us, they will always live within us!" Dear Marion and Family...My wife and I met Jim in Ireland at Roland and Nellie's. Even though we met for the first time, your dad felt like an old friend, someone we'd known for years. We attended the Marine B-Day Party last year after a lot of coaxing from Jim. I was probably one of few non-service guys there. We just heard Charlie on the National Radio Talk Show I set him up with. He did a great job talking about Jim. I wish I had known your dad better and longer. I admired him and all the things he has done. Please accept our deepest condolences and we hope to meet you some day at Cookie's on our way home from the south. With Sympathy, Jim and Betty

Many years ago my Grandfather Weasel and Ray Wagner were friends, joining our families together, many memories of great times, love and respect will always be with me, Jimmy was always there to lend a hand, catch a tear, make someone smile never asking for anything in return, he is a Hero to many, you could be having a bad day, walk along Oregon Avenue and not even see him but hear "Hi Honey", a wave, a smile a kind word, he will always be remembered....never to be forgotten, he smiles over all of us now....The Angels are certainly going to be "marching" in line now....Thank you, for being you.
