DEAR SALLY, WHEN I WENT TO MAIL MY RECENT NOTE TO BOB, I DID NOT REALIZE HOW LONG IT HAD BEEN SINCE I HEARD FROM HIM. I DID NOT KNOW THAT HE HAD PASSED DURING THE INTERUM. I AM WRITING TO ASK HOW YOU ARE DOING, AND TO SAY THAT I AM SO VERY SAD THAT HE IS NO LONGER WITH US . I HAD MET HIM FIRST IN MEXICO. WE WERE BOTH IN OAXACA. I HAD NOT KNOWN HIM. THE MEETING WAS AMAZING BECAUSE HE EXPLAINED TO ME AND A FRIEND THAT HE HAD COME FROM A COMP. LIT. MEETING AT NYU. THAT WAS ALREADY A LOT, BECAUSE I HAD GOTTEN MY PH.D AT NYU AND THEN WE DISCOVERED THAT FOR BOTH OF US OUR FIELDS WERE SURREALISM. HE TOLD ME ABOUT THE CELEBRATION THAT WOULD BE HELD IN THE FALL AND ASKED WHAT I MIGHT PRESENT. I WAS PROUD TO SAY "THE WOMEN OF SURREALISM". THAT WAS NOT YET PRESENTED IN PUBLIC LECTURES YET. HE INVITED ME TO PRESENT IT, AND WE REMAINED IN TOUCH AFTER THAT. IT WAS AMAZING AND A KIND OF SURREALIST CHANCE ENCOUNTER, AS I HAD NOT KNOWN HIM BEFORE THAT. HE OFFERED TO GET A CHAIR FOR ME AND MY FRIEND AND SIT WITH US IN THE VERY CROWDED CENTRAL GATHERING PLACE IN OAXACA.
I AM VERY SAD TO HAVE COME UPON THIS NEWS WHEN MY LETTER TO HIM WAS RETURNED TO ME----SAYING I SHOULD CHECK ON THE ADDRESS. BUT IT WAS THE ADDRESS I HAD ALWAYS USED. NOW I THINK I UNDERSTAND WHY I GOT THE LETTER RETURNED TO ME, BUT I FEEL THIS IS A GREAT LOSS TO EVERYONE WHO EVER KNEW HIM. I USED TO TEASE HIM ABOUT BEING THE ONLY PERSON I KNEW WHO WAS KNIGHTED AT ALL, AND LATER THAT CHANGED TO KNIGHTED SEVERAL TIMES. I HOPE THAT YOU WILL FIND THIS NOTE AND LEARN THAT I WAS STILL PRAYING FOR HIM AND THINKING OF HIM. IS THERE ANY WAY IN WHICH MY FRIENDSHIP WITH HIM OVER THE YEARS CAN BE OF HELP TO YOU NOW. I KNOW HE WAS LOOKING FOR A PLACE TO DONATE OR SELL HIS BOOK COLLECTION. I HAD TO DONATE A LOT OF MY BOOKS AND I CHOSE TO GIVE THEM TO "The Last Bookstore in Los Angeles", as they pick them up and then they have them distributed to the organizations and schools etc. where he knows the need is greatest. I just wanted to tell you that I had not forgotten him, but I am moving to NY to live with my daughters, and i am working on my archive and also on the move and I seem never to find the time to write, but today I insisted to my self that I should write, and received the sad news.. I hope you will send word of how you are doing now and if I can be of any help . My condolences to you and the wonderful family that you have What a great life I have read about in different notes about your trips and family gatherings, celebrations etc. I send you all my love and my sympathy, and know that I would be thinking about you and your family with blessings and compassion.
