Bluffton, South Carolina - Julia Anderson "Judy" Garland, 93, passed away peacefully on December 30, 2020 after a functional decline under hospice care in Bluffton, SC
Julia was born on February 3, 1927 to parents William Edgar Anderson and Lacie Lee Moore Anderson, growing up in West Asheville, NC. She graduated from Lee Edwards High School, then worked for Shield's Portrait Studio, where she met her future husband. She eloped in 1946 and married George N. Garland, Jr., a Marine Corps WWII veteran in Clayton, Georgia.
As a Marine wife of 30 years, she traveled to multiple duty stations with George and their 2 daughters, Karanne and Sharanne to Goose Creek, SC, Quantico, Va, Philadelphia, Pa, Albany, Ga, Kaneohe Bay, Hawaii, Camp Legeune, NC, Mayport, Fl, Cherry Point, NC, and Denver, Co. After her husband's retirement, they returned to their North Carolina roots to Otto, NC, building a home on the Little Tennessee River. After her husband's death, she then traveled to Georgia and South Carolina to be closer to family.
Judy was a housewife and mother who loved sewing for herself and family, gardening, square dancing, and later in life genealogy, tracing her family tree back into the 1800s.
She is preceded in death by her husband, Retired USMC Sgt. Major George N. Garland, Jr., daughter, Karanne Georgette Garland Tucker, Waynesville, NC, sisters, Margaret Louise Anderson, Asheville, NC, and Christine Anderson Rogers, Arlington, Va, and brother, William L. Anderson, Louisville, Ohio.
She is survived by 1 daughter, Sharanne Elizabeth Garland Murphy and husband, Timothy Daniel Murphy, Beaufort, SC, son-in-law Larry Wayne Tucker, Waynesville, NC, 3 grandchildren, Michael Patrick Murphy and wife, Kristy, Brunswick, Ga, Katherine Elizabeth Murphy Thompson and husband Patrick, Bluffton, SC and Kerri Elizabeth Tucker, Waynesville, NC, along with 2 great grandchildren, Avery Elizabeth Murphy and Mackenzie Elizabeth Thompson.
In lieu of funeral services, Julia requested body donation to USC School of Medicine, Gift of Body Program, Columbia SC. We wish to thank them as well as Benton House of Bluffton, Sprenger Healthcare, and Agape Hospice.
