Mary Melian Obituary

Mary Margaret Melian Mary Margaret Melian, nee Deegan, passed away on Saturday, November 15, 2009, in New York, in the company of her three children. Born July 11, 1928 in Perth Amboy, N. J. to Joseph F. Deegan and Helen Murray Deegan, she was a 1950 graduate of Marymount College and employed as an editor with Merck Chemical Company, Rahway, N. J. and IBM World Trade Corporation in New York. In February 1957, she married Raul Melian y Zobel of Manila, Philippine Islands, living there until her husband's retirement in 1969. The family then relocated to Sotogrande, Spain. They retained strong ties to her family, visiting often throughout the years. After her husband's death, she made annual pilgrimages attending to the disabled at the shrine of Our Lady of Lourdes, France. She is survived by her children, Maria del Carmen Melian of Manhattan, Jose Antonio Melian and his wife Cristina de la Maza of Brooklyn, and Maria Cecelia Melian and her husband Jean Michel Jaudel of Paris, France and grandchildren Leo and Paloma Jaudel, and Cristina Melian. Also surviving are her brother, Hon. Joseph F. Deegan and his wife Mary of Perth Amboy, and sister Catherine Ann Donnelly of Beaufort, S. C. and many nieces and nephews. A memorial Mass was said at St. Mary's Church in Perth Amboy, and at St. Vincent Ferrar in New York, where she was married. Funeral services will be this weekend in Spain.
