JAMES PATRICK
CASEY
Dec. 22, 1928 - May 31, 2011
James Patrick Casey, 82, of Brawley passed away at home on May 31, 2011 surrounded by his loving family.
Pat was born December 22, 1928 in Brawley, California to Charles and Mary Casey. He attended Myron D. Witter, Barbara Worth Junior High, and graduated from Brawley Union High School in 1946. While at B.U.H.S., he excelled in football, basketball, baseball and track. He was the starting tailback and safety in the inaugural Brawley / Central "Bell Game" in which Brawley was victorious. He still holds the B.U.H.S. basketball single game scoring record of 45 points. Proudly, he was inducted into the Imperial Valley Football Coaches Association Hall of Fame on its first ballot. Pat graduated from Stanford University in 1951 with a Bachelor's Degree in Political Science and was a member of the Stanford baseball team. Upon returning to the Valley, he married the love of his life, Nancy McClain on March 31, 1951. Pat then joined his father in the family farming business for 20 years. After farming, he earned his Master's Degree in Education from Whittier College. He taught at Westmorland Elementary School for 3 years and then became principal / superintendent at Mulberry School for 17 years where he also taught and coached numerous championship teams. Pat was an avid sports fan. He loved to follow Brawley High, Stanford and Notre Dame football. One of his favorite pastimes was going out to view the family farm. He was known for his sharp wit, compassion and sense of fairness for all. He loved spending time with his eight children and seventeen grandchildren, especially watching and supporting them in their many activities. Family was the centerpiece of his life.
Pat is survived by his loving wife of sixty years, Nancy. He is also survived by his eight children, Patrick Jr., Thomas, Craig and wife Mary Lu, Julie Steimel and husband Paul, Mary Beth Kelley and husband Kevin, Matthew and wife Elizabeth, Chris, and Carol Kline and husband Doug. Grandchildren include Hannah, Chloe and Lindsey Casey, Kaitlen Miller; Josh, Tyler and Sarah Steimel; Kathleen, Kevin and Maureen Kelley; Amanda, Alan, Aidan and Ava Casey; Karlee, Dougie and Casey Kline; sister Mary Dessert and brother Mike Casey, and numerous nephews and nieces.
Services will be held Saturday, June 11 at 10 a.m. at Frye Chapel and Mortuary in Brawley. Burial will follow at Riverview Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in Pat's name to the Brawley Union High School Athletic Department or local charities of your choice.

So many happy memories surround the Casey family - I loved being a guest in their home. I will always recall Mr. Casey with newspaper in his hands greeting me with a witty remark, teasing or challenge to get me to respond as I walked through the room. He made me feel welcome in his wonderful, energetic household. May you be with God.

My condolences to the Casey Family. I was a student of his at Mulberry. He was, to this day, one of the best instructors I had in all my education, and not to mention coach. He will be missed.

Uncle Pat was a great uncle. He and Aunt Nancy always made us feel so welcome when we came to Brawley. We always wanted to stay there and not go home. Uncle Pat was a good man who was first and foremost, a family man. He was a hard worker, extremely fair to others and had a good moral compass. He was supportive and encouraging of others endeavors and if you earned his praise, you really felt as if you had accomplished something. I loved listening to his stories and just sitting around talking with him. He was an extremely smart man and was fun to discuss politics with. I will really miss Uncle Pat and I feel priviledged to have known him. My love to Aunt Nancy and all of my cousins......you are the best. Cousin Vicky

Casey family, I knew your father for a short time but saw what a great teacher, father, grandfather he was. Tom was one of the best recievers and baseball players BUHS had and you could tell Mr. Casey was proud of all his children and grandchildren's achievements. I am thinking of your family and knowing your strong family, will find peace knowing what a great legacy he left behind. Your friend, Thomas Brittain

Dear Caseys-
I just heard about Pat's death yesterday. I'm so sorry. My fondest memory of Pat was how patiently he answered my endless questions when Tommy & I would ride along with him out to check the farm. He was my answer guy. I'm praying for God's comfort for all of you.

Dear Casey Family, Your dad was a great teacher and coach at Mulberry School.I was lucky enough to be on his girls softball teams through out my years there in the 70's, boy was he tough on us and I learned how to play ball because of him but, in order to win he had to be. He was a good teacher while looking over his glasses at us trying to keep us inline. He was a easy going man, a fare man and he will be missed by all who knew him. During football season I saw how proud he was to watch his grandsons play for Our Brawley Boys team. Blessings to You All, Karen Lynch, Mike, Cameron, Colton & Caston Tate

To the entire Casey family, we are praying for God to release your pain as Pat is now in Heaven and at peace. May you find comfort in knowing how many friends you have that are praying for you. Our daughter Kristine, now living in Texas, was classmates with Carol, and we know what a wonderful man your father was. He was definitely the Patriarch of the Casey Clann. God Bless and be with you all.

To Craig, Julie, MaryBeth and the Casey Family,
Just wanted to let you know that I was thinking about you and I am sorry for your loss. Your father was a very nice guy. I have lots of memories of playing basketball in your backyard with your father and Craig. He was tough! But one thing I remember was that he treated me just like all the other kids and that meant a lot to me at that time. I wish I was in Brawley to celebrate his life with you, but I am in Maryland at present. My prayers and thoughts are with you and your families now. Much love to you all.

Julie and family, My thoughts and prayers are with you, your mom and each of your siblings. The loss of a father is great. I can only imagine what a huge influence he was to all of you, because just my small association with him was huge....Not being an athlete like a Casey he tried to help me!!! He was my friends Dad, my teacher and coach at Mulberry, he so tried to help me in softball, basketball but there was no hope, I always made the B team (barely) Julie I remember when we were driving to San Diego in my yellow bug, and he wanted to make sure we knew how to change a flat tire, I figured I had my triple A card, that was all I needed, yet he wouldn't let us leave your drive way until we could show him how to change a tire. I didn't even know where the jack was, he showed us and let us be on our way. You and Mary Beth came to him about your engagements close together and he said double or nothing and it was great!!! Remember life is eternal in heaven, no more pain only happiness.... Luv to all,Kathy Kellogg
