MELCHOR MORENO OCAMPO

Jan. 6, 1930 - Jan. 4, 2014

Melchor Ocampo was born in Brawley on January 6, 1930 to Felipe ( El fotografo) Ocampo and Concepcion Moreno. Mel died on January 4, 2014 in Sacramento.
Mel graduated from Brawley High in 1948. He was a Zoot Zooter of the 1940s. He served his country in the U.S. Army in 1951. In Korea he stepped on a mine and was awarded the Purple Heart. Mel was a member of Imperial Valley Korean War Veterans Association.
In Santa Maria he hosted an early a.m. Mexican radio show. He was a California prison teacher. He was a lifetime Baptist.
He was preceded in death by his parents, brothers, Vicente of Brawley, Felipe Jr of Holtville, Amadeo of Merced; sister, Esther of Honolulu; children, Melchor Jr, and Yvonne of Los Angeles, and Steve of Santa Maria; nieces, Angie Valenzuela of Brawley and Penny of Merced.
Survived by wife Pricilla of Sacramento; sister, Lidia (Santillan) of Oxnard; children; Mel III and Cathy of Santa Maria; nephews, Danny Santillan of Calexico, Amadeo Jr. of Merced, Vince Jr. of Yuma, and Robert Santillan of Flagstaff; nieces, Rita and Rosalia of Merced, Linda Carpio and Sally Villegas of Brawley; numerous grandchildren and great- grandchildren.
Mel was buried at the National Veterans Memorial Cemetery of Dixon. Rest in Peace Tio.
