PAULINE HAWK
Dec. 11, 1913 - Sept. 13, 2012
Pauline Hawk passed into Heaven peacefully on September 13, 2012 at the age of 98 in her Point Loma home, lovingly surrounded by family and caregivers. She was born into the large family of Chilton and Nora Myrick on December 11, 1913 in Nash, Texas. Pauline grew up in the village of Nash, across the road from her beloved Baptist Church, where she played the piano for the congregation from a very early age. After high school, she attended junior college and taught school in Texas. On a trip, to visit her sister Nola in Holtville, CA, she met Robert J. (Bob) Hawk in her sister's country store. They were married in 1938 and she and Bob made their home in the country south of Holtville.
She followed Bob to Hawaii in 1941, where his engineering skills were used in building bomb storages and roads. They were together in the hills above Pearl Harbor when the Japanese attacked the navy base on December 7, 1941. Upon their return to the United States mainland in 1942, Pauline volunteered to be a look-out from a neighboring farm's water tower in the event of further Japanese attacks.
Near the end of the war, she and Bob started a family of five children. As their children grew to school age, she began teaching at the Imperial Valley elementary schools of Jasper Alamitos and then Meadows Union, as she obtained her Bachelor's Degree and teaching credential in education at San Diego State University. She spent most of her teaching career at Meadows Union, where she taught First Grade and Kindergarten and always insisted on having a piano in her room whereby she enhanced student learning. She is lovingly remembered by her students to this day. She retired in 1984.
From her earliest days in Imperial Valley, she became active in the Presbyterian Church of El Centro, as well as the local Republican Party, through which she personally met both Presidents Ronald Reagan and George W. Bush. She was a strong supporter of the American Cancer Society. She also enjoyed playing bridge with her many friends. However, she reserved most of her personal time for nurturing her children, especially in music, conversation, reading, civic activities, and all things children.
She is survived by her children, Charlotte (Paul) Browder of Pine Valley, CA; Tim (Michal Marie) Hawk of San Diego, CA; John (Susan) Hawk of Holtville, CA; and Mary Pauline (Charles) Stewart of Yuma, AZ. She is also survived by her grandchildren Paul Warren Browder II of Imperial, CA, Robert (Marie) Browder of Chula Vista, CA, Justin (Criscelyn) Browder of Escondido, CA, Juliet Hawk of Oakland, CA, Alexander Hawk of Austin, TX, Tiffany (Bernard) Hawk-Larsen of Aptos, CA, Jonathan Hawk of Norman, OK, James (Misty) Hawk of Holtville, CA, Stephen (Hannah-engaged) Hawk of Holtville, CA, Sarah (Talon) Larson of Roundlake, NY, Daniel Hawk of Longview, TX, Mary Elizabeth Stewart of San Diego, CA, Anne Marie (Andrew) Knizley of Yuma, AZ, Deborah (Bijan) Parsi of Spring Valley, CA, Bryan (Amy) Hawk of Salinas, CA, Lea (Clinton) Hubler of Orem, UT, Jared (Leanne) Hawk of Boise, ID, and Joseph Hawk of Boise, ID; as well as numerous great-grandchil- dren, nieces and nephews.
She was pre-deceased by her husband, Bob, and her eldest child, Robert David Hawk.
A viewing will be held from 9:30-10:30 a.m. followed by a funeral service at 10:30 a.m. on Saturday, September 29th, at Chapel of the Hills United Community Methodist Church located at 25153 Viejas Blvd in Descanso, CA 91916. Interment will follow at the Alpine Cemetery. Flowers or donations to the American Cancer Society will be welcome.

Mrs. Hawk was my kindergarden teacher and a dear family friend. We exchanged Christmas cards for many years, long after I had left the valley. She was a shining example of what a teacher is supposed to be. May her legacy live on in her children and grandchildren. My thoughts and prayers go out to the Hawk family.

May God's comfort and peace be with you dear ones. Pauline always made me feel like one of the family whenever I came by to hang out with Mary. I loved being in the Hawk's home as it was just as busy and hectic as my own. On the many occasions I spent in her home, she always made me laugh and never hesitated to invite me to stay for dinner. What a lovely lady she was. My parents, who have been gone for many years now, both loved and respected Pauline. I admired her dedication and love for her family. I believe Pauline Hawk was a fine example of the woman that Proverbs 31 describes. I know she is now rejoicing in the presence of our Lord. Much love to you all.

Peanut butter cookies and milk as you arrive. The tricycles. The big underground pipe on the playground. The sand box. An upright piano. But those things would not be complete without Mrs. Hawk. Things engraved in my heart forever. Thank you Mrs. Hawk for crossing my path and I hope to cross it again with you in heaven. -Meadows Kindergarten 1979 graduate.

Mrs. Hawk was my kindergarten teacher. I was thinking of her just last week. Some teachers make a life-long difference for the children whose lives they touch, and she is one of them. I'm 34 now, and I have twin girls. My girls are five years old. My girls started kindergarten here in Yuma this year, and it's brought back so many memories of my own kindergarten experience. I remembered a book...
Bobby Sexton (who was the aide when I attended kinder) wrote: "I met Pauline when I worked as her aide she taught me so much she wanted the children to learn to read we spent many recesses listening to them read she was a very amazing women she will be missed."
I was one of those kids. We used to read this book called "Dancing in the Moon." We'd sit on a bench just outside the classroom door during recess while many other kids were off riding tricycles. I loved reading. She had me recite the book on stage at my kindergarten graduation.
Last week I decided I wanted my girls to have that book also. It's kind of sentimental to me. I didn't realize it's been out of print for quite some time. Evidently it was printed in 1955. It was hard to find, but we found a copy online, and it arrived in the mail just last week. I read it to my girls, and one of my daughters can read it all by herself now too.
I was just remembering Mrs. Hawk and feeling grateful for her influence, and for her taking that extra time to instill a love of reading and learning. I'm thankful to be able to pass those things on to my children. I hope my girls will one day read this book to their kindergarteners!
She was a wonderful teacher.

As a child I lived across the street from her house. She called me once into her house while I was waiting for the school bus. She gave me a red hat and tenderly put it on my head. Just one of those sweet memories. Rest in peace Sra. Hawk.

Mrs. Hawk was my first grade teacher at Meadows. I did not speak English very well, so she would take a reading book out to recess and stand in the shade with me and and helped me read. I believe it is because of her that I quickly learned English and became an avid reader. Thank you Mrs. Hawk. You were classy and graceful and I will always remember you.
