Geneva Harris Obituary

Geneva Catherine Dunagan Harris was born December 4 1920 the eldest child of Horace H. Dunagan and Ruth Childress Dunagan. She passed away on August 26 2006 at age 85. Her childhood years were spent on a farm near Yorkville Tennessee. She was a 1940 graduate of Yorkville High School. Geneva married Charles Hinton Harris on June 8 1940. Their marriage was followed by a life on the Harris farm four miles west of Trenton where the land and home place have been maintained for over 100 years. The United States government employed Geneva for over 30 years having joined the labor force at the Milan Army Ammunitions Plant during World War II and then working for many years at the Agricultural Stabilization and Conservation Service office in Trenton before her retirement in 1982. Charles and Geneva were married for 56 years prior to Charles's death on October 1 1996. Two children were born to them John Thomas and Mary Kathryn. Geneva was a faithful member of Bethany Church of Christ for over 60 years. She was active in the Gibson County Farm Bureau and NARFE. She loved gardening and collecting plates and teapots. She enjoyed helping others and spending time with her family and many friends. Her husband Charles Hinton Harris her parents Horace H. Dunagan and Ruth Dunagan Poteet Delaney her brothers Mack Dunagan Horace Dunagan Jr. and J. C. Dunagan and a sister Sula Allmon preceded Geneva in death. Geneva is survived by her step-mother Martha Dunagan of Yorkville Tennessee; a son and daughter-in-law John and Betty Harris of Lenoir City Tennessee; a daughter and son-in-law Mary and Buddy Gresham of Medina Tennessee; her grandchildren Jackie and Rhea Rippey of Nashville Tennessee Teresa and Dr. Barry Scott of Mayfield Kentucky; Angela Harris Felix and Jodi Gresham and John Gresham all of Nashville; great-grandchildren Jonathan and Hope Scott of Mayfield Kentucky; surviving sisters Jamie Bell of Jackson and Kay Pafford Gordon of Yorkville; brothers Jim Poteet Marietta of Monteagle Tennessee and Grover Poteet Betty of Trenton; many other caring relatives and friends and a special caregiver Donna Craddock of Rutherford Tennessee who gave her so much support and care during the difficult last months of her life. Funeral services will be Monday August 28 2006 at Shelton Funeral Home in Trenton TN at 2:00 P.M. Visitation will be Sunday August 27 2006 from 5:00 to 8:00 P.M. Pallbearers to serve are grandsons Felix Gresham and John Gresham special friends Frank Shivers and Leon Moore and her nephews Gene Allmon David Allmon James Dunagan and Dr. Nick Dunagan. Honorary pallbearers will be Mahlon Greene and Wilburn George. The family wishes to express tremendous gratitude to the employees and residents of Summer's Landing Retirement Community to Frank and Jeanette Shivers to Leon and Sue Moore to Donna and Billy Craddock to the members of Bethany Church of Christ and to countless other Trentonians who showed Geneva a great outpouring of compassion presence love and kindness.
