Dave's memory is still alive in my heart. I recall a winter evening walk in Bethesda, MD with my 2 year old son, Miles, 30 years ago. Dave was in town for one of his regular NSF meetings, staying at my Mother's (his sister) home. I am not sure why we were out on a walk that evening, but Dave had an understanding of parenting that as a brand new mom, I had yet to learn. When my son reached down to pick up a gnarly looking piece of a debris (likely from a tree), I was quick as a new mom to judge it not appropriate for my baby to handle. Before I could speak my thought, Dave noted the find and said to Miles, "do you like that? You can have that". His voice delivering kindness and wisdom all at once. In that moment, I felt a door open in my life as a parent. Dave never lost his sense of wonder and curiosity in this world. The baby he encouraged to share in that wonder - Miles is now a scientist, walking through life with that same "Dave inspired" sense of wonder. I am so grateful that Dave was part of my life and I miss him.
