John Myers
June 22, 1932 - March 31, 2025
It is with deep sorrow that we announce the passing of our beloved father, John Michael Myers, who earned his wings on March 31, 2025. He was 92 years old, leaving behind a legacy of love, resilience, and cherished memories.
John was born on June 22, 1932 in Casey, IL the son of R.L. and Blanche (Anderson) Myers. The family quickly moved to Mount Vernon, IL where he lived throughout his school years. John was the team manager for the Mount Vernon High School Rams basketball team. Who were back-to-back ISHA State Basketball Champions in 1949 (30-3) and 1950 (33-0). After graduating high school in 1950, John joined the U.S. Navy in 1951 during the Korean War. Serving honorably onboard the USS Alstede supply ship as a Petty Officer Second Class (E-5) until 1955. After his military service he was a salesman for US Steel's Oilwell Supply Company for 16 years. Then retiring, after almost 40 years, with S&K Air Power, of Arcola and Mattoon, as an inside salesman.
John married Deon Hash of Mattoon on March 6. 1965 - recently celebrating their 60th wedding anniversary. Leaving behind his beloved children, Mike Myers of Berkeley Springs, WV, Gina Barr and husband Scott of Woodridge, IL and Gregg Myers of Mattoon, IL; grandchildren, Emily and Steven Barr both of Woodridge, IL; and loving brother Gary Myers and wife Linda of Mount Vernon, IL. He dedicated his life to his family, always putting their needs above his own. His wise words and unwavering support guided us through life's challenges.
John was a devout parishioner of Mattoon's Immaculate Conception Catholic Church. He was avid and dedicated fan for the University of Illinois men's football and basketball programs throughout their up and down seasons. Coming oh so close to becoming NCAA Basketball National Champions in 2005 - why, why, why? John was also a lifelong passionate St. Louis Cardinals fan. Seeing numerous Division, National League, and World Series Championships - sorry Cubbies. He truly enjoyed bass fishing with his brother Gary - doing more fishing than catching. John's healthy lifestyle habits of walking 4 miles outside and in the mall, plus his commitment of working out for many of years at Mattoon's YMCA proves exercise does help. He rewarded himself with a brand new, bright red Toyota Supra from his friends at KC Summers at the age of 88 years old.
Throughout his life, John was known for his kindness and generosity. His Christian spirit touched everyone he met, and leaves behind countless nieces, nephews, colleagues and friends who will remember him fondly. He was a sweet and fine gentleman - just a really good guy.
John was preceded in death by his parents and sister, Mary Helen Watson.
Memorial donations in his honor may be given to the YMCA, 221 North 16th Street, Mattoon, IL 61938.
