Bertrand Flynn Obituary

Bertrand Flynn
January 18, 2024
Bertrand Michael Flynn, beloved husband of the late Marguerite (Chetelat) Flynn, passed away on Thursday, January 18, 2024 in the comfort of his home, surrounded by his loving family.
Bert was born in Brooklyn, NY on May 16, 1933, son of the late Cornelius & Kathleen (O'Brien) Flynn. He graduated from LaSalle Academy in Manhattan and went on to attend St. Peters College in Jersey City, NJ, majoring in business. After deciding business wasn't for him, Bert left St. Peters and enlisted in the U.S. Navy, serving from 1952–1956. He trained as a communication technician in Naval Intelligence, serving in Honshu, Japan for 2 years tracking Russian submarines. Upon his discharge from the Navy, Bert returned to St. Peters in 1956, eventually earning his Master's Degree in Social Work from Fordham University. He worked as the Director of Residential Programs at the Mansfield Training School from 1970–1984 and at a regional school from 1984–1991 with the CT Department of Mental Retardation.
In January, 1961 Bert married Mary Ann Hetzer. They adopted a son, Michael Flynn in May of 1970 and after many years of marriage, divorced. In June of 1994, Bert married Marguerite Phillips, spending the next 24 years together until her death in 2018. After his retirement in 1992, Bert volunteered his time at the Library for the Blind in Rocky Hill and served as the "camera man" at the Bolton Board of Selectmen's meetings for 10 years. He was a grateful member of Al Anon for many years and served as an Al-A-Teen sponsor, helping many youths who were struggling with addiction within their families.
Bert is survived by his son Michael Flynn of Aurora, Colorado, his loving step-children Donna Phillips & Trip Barnett, Bill & Pam Phillips, step-grandchildren Michael Dietz & Sandra Guerrero, Jodi & Luke Hoar, Megan & Simon Wake, 8 great-grandchildren, and a great-great-granddaughter. Bert is also survived by his very best friend of many years, John Sattar and his devoted caregiver, Marjorie.
Calling hours will be held on Saturday, January 27th from 9am – 11am at the John F. Tierney Funeral Home, 219 West Center St., Manchester, CT followed by a funeral mass at 11:30 am at St. Maurice Church, 32 Hebron Road, Bolton. Burial will immediately follow at the Bolton Center Cemetery.
Throughout his life, Bert was an animal lover, especially black labs. In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation in his memory to the Connecticut Humane Society in Newington, CT (www.cthumane.org). For online condolences please visit www.tierneyfunerahome.com.

It was very sad to hear of Bert's passing. He was a very nice man. I had the pleasure of spending time with him on his visits to my parents house, John & Lail Suanno. He will be missed by many. I will always remember his smile and kindness. Deepest Sympathy to the family.

About my 2nd cousin Bert, I recall two quotes from two films; one is "...for to be without friends is a serious form of poverty." and "... the saddest thing in life is never to be loved." It's evident Bert didn't need to worry; had an abundance of both. Bert, you will be deeply missed.
Love,
Elizabeth S.

The world has lost a kind, gentle, and wise man-- who I was privileged to call my friend for 16 years. Bert... who gave the best hugs, the best advice, and had the warmest smile and laugh. Bert... whom I envied-- because even at 90 his hair had not turned gray, and his legs were so much more attractive than mine. Bert... who tolerated my endless teasing about wearing argyle dress socks with shorts in the summer. I was among the many grateful Friday-night-Bolton people who loved and respected him and Marge. I learned so much from them and grew so much spiritually because of them, and now I will miss them terribly. My sincere condolences to Donna, Bill, and the rest of the family on your loss.
