Frank Carmon Obituary

Frank William "Bill" Carmon, III, 61, of Windsor and Emigrant, Mont., beloved husband for 38 years of Wanda (Glowacki) Carmon, died on Thursday, May 23, 2013, at his home in Windsor.

Born in Hartford on June 15, 1951, son of Nan (Christensen) Carmon of Windsor and the late Frank William Carmon, Jr., Bill had spent most of his life in Windsor and was a graduate of Windsor High School, Class of 1970. While growing up in Windsor, he was active in sports and community activities, including playing on the Windsor High School Football team and serving as President of the Student Council during his senior year. After graduation, Bill enrolled at the American Academy McAllister Institute of Funeral Service in New York, N.Y. and graduated as the Valedictorian in 1971, receiving the Dr. John McAllister Memorial Award, the New York State Funeral Directors Award, and he was inducted into the Mu Sigma Alpha honor society. He returned home to work with his parents and his brother at the Carmon Funeral Home, then in Windsor Center and the Poquonock section of Windsor. Shortly after returning to Windsor, Bill's father passed away leaving Bill and his brother John to manage the family firm. Bill's brother Richard joined them soon after. In 1977, the family acquired the Hayes-Huling Funeral Home in Granby, and Bill and his wife Wanda moved to Granby to live in the funeral home and become a part of the community. Bill immediately became an active member of the Granby Chamber of Commerce as well as several other community organizations. After having his children, Bill moved back to Windsor to his grandmother's home on Orchard Road. Bill and his brothers John and Richard continued to grow the funeral business, acquiring the Nicholson Funeral Home in Suffield, the Samsel Funeral Home in South Windsor, and the Ladd-Turkington Funeral Home in Vernon and Rockville. Bill also managed the Waszkelewicz South Green Memorial Home in Hartford for 27 years and was an active part of the Polish community in the greater Hartford area, including being a member of the Polish National Home in Hartford. Bill worked as a licensed funeral director for over 40 years and was a member of the National Funeral Directors Association, the Connecticut Funeral Directors Association, and Selected Independent Funeral Homes. He also earned the designation of a Gold Key Funeral Director and Preferred Funeral Service Professional during his career. He served as the sexton of the Palisado and Riverside Cemeteries in Windsor for many years and as a board member of the First School Society in Windsor and the Granby Cemetery Association in Granby. A lifelong member of Trinity United Methodist Church, he and his wife Wanda and their children have been an active part of the church community and Trinity Christian School. He served as a trustee at the church and was a past chairman of the finance committee. He and his wife Wanda also participated in several mission trips with Trinity Methodist and their church in Montana, Gardiner Community Church, in Ensenada, Mexico where they assisted in building homes for underprivileged families. An active member of the Masonic Lodge, Bill was a Past Master of Washington Lodge 70 A.F. & A.M., a Past District Deputy of the Grand Lodge of Connecticut, a Past President of the Windsor Masonic Building Association and the Past Master's Association of Washington Lodge. Bill also served four terms on the Board of Trustees of the Masonicare Corporation and as Chairman of the Board of Ashlar Village, Inc. He was a charter member of the Nathan Hale Consistory and a member of the Ancient Accepted Scottish-Rite Valley of Hartford. Bill was awarded the Masonicare Luke A. Lockwood Medal for outstanding service to Masonicare in Connecticut in 2000, and he received the Pierpont Edwards Medal in Bronze for outstanding service to Connecticut Masonry. Continuing the tradition started by his father, Bill believed deeply in giving back to the communities where he lived and operated his business. He was a life member of the both the Salmon Brook Historical Society in Granby and the Windsor Historical Society, he was a forty-year member of the Windsor Lions Club, serving two terms as president, and coached little league baseball in Windsor. In 2011, the Windsor Jaycees honored Bill for his service to the Town of Windsor by having him serve as the Parade Marshal for the town's annual Shad Derby Celebration. In 2012, the Chamber of Commerce in Granby honored Bill as their "Businessman of the Year" for his service to businesses and the community in Granby. A tireless worker, he gave his all to every family he served at his family's business and to the community organizations that he was privileged to be a part of. Bill was passionate about Montana and loved the people and communities in Paradise Valley, Montana. Since his first trip to Montana in 1986, Bill looked forward to spending time with family and friends at his log home and touring the areas around Yellowstone National Park. He was a supporter of several organizations that benefited Yellowstone National Park and was currently the President of the Grizzly Meadows Land Owners Association.

Besides his loving wife since 1974, Wanda G. Carmon; he leaves his mother, Nan C. Carmon of Windsor; a daughter, Lisa M. Petkis and her husband, Bernard of Windsor; two sons, Frank W. Carmon, IV and his wife, Taryn, of Windsor and Timothy H. Carmon and his wife, Kristin, of South Windsor; four grandchildren whom he adored, Kyle and Evan Petkis, and Andrew and Emily Carmon; two brothers, John C. Carmon and his wife, Linda, of Avon, and Richard L. Carmon and his wife, Linda "Chris" Carmon, of Suffield; a sister, Margie C. Frank Senior was a very special guy. He was so very professional & he taught his son well. Frank had a wonderful sense of humor. Whenever I saw Frank I would always tell him that he was very good looking I would tell him that his son was even better looking. And he just would laugh & laugh & would say something like "well you got that right, ha, ha". He surely is very, very missed. Frank is with our Lord, our God, in heaven. Beverly Wheeler

Our deepest sympathies to all of the family during this very very sad and emotional time. We were deeply shocked and saddened by Bill's passing. In a very short time period, we lost our uncle, aunt and mother and the only bright spot during those times was Bill. He was so compassionate and always a true professional yet he had this gift of feeling as though he was one of the family. We couldn't have gotten through this period without him. And, we hope your countless memories of Bill and his gentle soul will guide you through in the days to come. With deepest sympathy. The Winiarski Family.

Billy was in the first class of fourth graders that I taught in old John Fitch school. He was and always will be one of my favorites. It was a privilege to watch him grow into an honorable man, a gentleman, like his father. His joy and love for Wanda led to a wonderful family of his own. And still, he gave of himself to so many... he was a leader, a doer. Farewell, friend.... You will be missed by many.
