John Shlatz Obituary

John Paul Shlatz passed away peacefully Monday, Aug. 6, 2018, at Touch Points of Manchester.

Born to Elarry and Helen (Yanek) Shlatz Jan. 1, 1946, in Stafford Springs, he grew up helping his father on the farm raising potatoes, peaches, pears, blueberries, and haying. He graduated Enfield High School in 1964 and left to go to a technical school in California for two years, then joined the U.S. Army and fought in Vietnam from '66 to '68. He joined the Army National Guard until 1972 with an honorable discharge and then joined Westover Airforce Base and went to Desert Storm in 1990. He put in 25 years with the service and retired from there. He opened up Shlatz Package Store on Taylor Road in Enfield and stayed until his health deteriorated.

John loved helicopters, especially Huey's and flying small planes. He was an avid hunter for deer and turkeys on his property. A NASCAR fan, he enjoyed Beach Boys and '50s and '60s music, westerns, and dogs, especially his dog "Belle," who was so attached to him. John was member of VFW Post 10219, American Legion Tanguay Magill Post 80, Enfield, Enfield Elks Lodge B.P.O.E 2222, D.A.V. Post 52, Vietnam Helicopter Crew Member Association, and the Veterans Council.

He leaves his wife Debra (Sidor) Shlatz of 45 years of marriage; a daughter, Carolyn Pascucci and husband, Joseph II, of Houston, Texas; and a son, Kevin Shlatz and his wife, Jessica, of West Hartford; his grandchildren, Matteo and Liliana Pascucci of Houston, and Katherine and Elizabeth of West Hartford. He was predeceased by his parents and a brother, Elarry W. Shlatz.

John's family will receive relatives and friends Friday, Aug. 10, from 9 to 11 a.m. followed by a service at 11 a.m. at Browne Memorial Funeral Chapels. Interment will then take place with military honors in St. Adalbert Cemetery, Enfield.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions in his memory may be made to the D.A.V. (Disabled American Veterans) Enfield Chapter 52, 43 Pearl St., Enfield, CT 06082, or the Alzheimer's Association CT Chapter, 200 Executive Blvd., Suite 4B, Southington, CT 06489-1058.

My condolences to John's family.
I had the privilege of working with John for many years.
He always offered a helping hand and a story or two. I remember the ear to ear smile he had on his face when he told me the story of meeting his wife (driving a hot rod!) and he shone with pride when he spoke of his kids. His family was pride and his joy.

I was privileged to serve with John in the Air Frce Reserve at Westover. He was always a gentleman, kind and honest. A man of integrity who loved his country. My condolences to his family.
