Nathan Agostinelli Obituary

Nathan G. Agostinelli
1930 - 2024
Nathan G. Agostinelli passed away on Wednesday, March 20, 2024. Nate was born on August 17, 1930, to Albert and Gilda Agostinelli, wonderful parents, immigrants from Magliano Sabina, Italy. He was married to Helena (Hare) Agostinelli until her passing after 35 years of marriage in 1986.
Nate and Helena are survived by two wonderful sons, Michael and Steven, who they adored and loved dearly. Nate also had a brother Henry who passed away several years ago. Nate was also predeceased by his special friend and companion of many years, Elsie Tartaglia.
To succeed in life, in either business, military or politics, a person is considered to be very successful. To succeed in all three fields is almost impossible. Nate has accomplished this rare feat. In politics, Nate was elected and re-elected Mayor of Manchester, then elected Comptroller of the State of Connecticut (the only person in the history of Manchester to be elected to a State-wide office). Also elected Chairman of the Capitol Region Council of Governments (29 towns) and State Chairman for the election of Ronald Reagan for President. In addition to many awards, he was involved in most major events in Manchester between 1966 and 2003.
In the military, Nate was drafted into the United States Army during the Korean War. Served as an enlisted man, then attended Artillery OCS at Fort Sill, Oklahoma, commissioned 2nd Lieutenant. Upon separation, served with the reserves for a few years, then joined the Connecticut Army National Guard, retiring with rank of Brigadier General. He was then appointed by the Secretary of the army as Civilian Aide to the Secretary of the Army for Connecticut. And later appointed by President Clinton as Director of Selective Service for the State of Connecticut. Nate has received many awards and medals during his Military Career.
In Business, he was the President of the very successful Manchester State Bank for 25 years until it was acquired by New England Bank and served on the Board as Executive Vice President. Also, as President of Suburban Bankers Association, Advisory Board, Federal Reserve Bank of Boston, Member American Bankers Association, and State Representative-Independent Bankers of America.
Always a leader, Nate has received over 100 plaques, awards, and citations over his many years.
A Brief Summary:
1.Voted by the Connecticut State Employee's Association Outstanding State Official
2.Outstanding Civilian Service Medal presented by the Secretary of the Army
3.Presidential Commendation – presented by the President of the United States
4.Inducted into the Connecticut Veterans Hall of Fame (First Class, First Inductee)
5.Inducted into the OCS Hall of Fame, Fort Sill, Oklahoma
6.Inducted into the Manchester Sports Hall of Fame
7.CT National Guard Association of the United States-Patrick Henry Award for Outstanding Service
8.Leukemia Society-Man of the Year Award
9.B'nai B'rith, Charter Oak Chapter-Community Service Award
10.Founded the Manchester Sports Hall of Fame with Earl Yost, Steve Cassano
The Manchester Board of Directors for his many contributions, support, guidance, and leadership to Manchester named the "Nate Agostinelli, Veteran Memorial Park" by a unanimous vote in his honor. The park is located at the intersection of East Center and Parker Street. A great tribute to a special person.

I woke up to very sad news this morning- yes I am way behind on reading the Journal Inquirer- our DEAR family friend and paisan passed away. I have always considered the Agostinelli's more family than friends. I was fortunate to grow up with them and share many happy times and good pizza at Gus's pizza. I hold all of them especially "uncle Nate" close to my heart. Dear Mike and Steve I am so sorry, your Dad is an amazing man and a GOOD man! He was always a constant in my life. I bumped into Nate at Stop and Shop just last month, as always I walked away with a hug and a smile and lots of town news!! He will be very missed but what a group he has waiting for him - there probably was a parade when he arrived. Ciao mio amico- until we meet again!

Less than a month ago Nate and I had a typically vigorous discussion over the new library Being planned on the spot of the original state bank... it was like talking to a midlife businessman at the peak of his game. He never lost it.
Nate will always have a seat at Mulberry
Rest in peace

Mr Agostinelli(Nate) was a wonderful man. He was often at our home on High Street at our kitchen table. He was vital in planning with my father James Leber and Denny Carlin the Little League field on Love Lane. Leber field. Nate worked with the Ct National Guard to accomplished this. He loved the youth of my home town. Our whole was honored to know and work with great man. RIP Sir.
