Stephen Maughan Obituary

Stephen Maughan, 53, of Vernon, beloved husband of 25 years to Coleen (Plaza) Maughan, passed away unexpectedly on Thursday, Dec. 2, 2021.

Born in County Sligo, Ireland, the son of the late Patrick and Ellen (Callahan) Maughan, he came to the United States in 1977 and lived in East Hartford before moving to Vernon in 1991. He was a graduate of East Hartford High School, Class of 1987. Stephen was happiest when spending time with his children and wife. He was a caregiver both in his career and with his family and friends. He found joy on the road, driving his Jeep and working out at the gym. He leaves his family with many fond memories of his sense of humor and strong personality. He was a kind and generous soul, always willing to assist.

In addition to his wife, he is survived by his children, Victoria, Mary Rose, and John Maughan; his siblings, Michael, David and his wife, Teresa; Miranda, Daniel and his partner, John, Lorraine and her husband, Robert, Geraldine and her husband, Glen; his father-in-law, Robert Plaza; his mother-in-law, Carol (Blair) Mercugliano; his brother-in-law, Matthew Plaza; and several aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, cousins and dear friends.

His family will receive friends for calling hours on Friday, Dec. 10, from 9 to 11 a.m. at the Ladd-Turkington & Carmon Funeral Home, 551 Talcottville Road (Route 83), Vernon, followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 11:30 a.m. at St. Bernard Church, 25 St. Bernard Terrace, Vernon. Burial will be private.

In lieu of flowers, donations in his memory may be made to Heart of Mary Villa in the Philippines, via Wide Horizons For Children at

Donations made in Stephen's name will go directly to a program to teach caregivers who care for babies.
