Patsy Mailand Obituary

Patsy Ann Mailand 1950—2017
Patsy Ann Mailand, 67, of Freeport, IL, passed away peacefully at home on Sunday, October 29, 2017. Pat was born in Freeport on June 9, 1950; the daughter of Joyce and Del Mailand. Pat attended Freeport schools, graduating in 1968. Wanting to be a teacher since she was in grade school, she then pursued her teaching degree at Illinois State University, Normal, IL, graduating in 1972, with a Bachelor of Science Degree in Elementary Education. After her college graduation she continued her education as a Graduate Student/Dormitory Assistant for Pickering House in Watterson Towers at ISU from 1972–73. Pat then began her teaching career and taught elementary school for 35 years, touching many young lives as a dedicated teacher, retiring in 2008. She loved teaching the younger students over the years, especially the first graders and enjoyed helping her students learn. She always had new ideas for a lesson plan, a learning game or project, or an educational activity for the children to do to make learning fun! Pat always had a smile on her face, a hand to hold and a hug to share. Pat was honored as the Lena Jaycees Teacher of the Year in 1988, received the Stephenson County Ag Teacher of the Year Award in 2006, and was listed in Who's Who in Education as a dedicated educator. She will be remembered by the many young hearts she touched as an educator throughout her years of teaching!
She also worked as a part-time teller on Saturdays for Midwest Bank on Crestwood Drive for 20 years. Pat was a past member of the Delta Kappa Gamma, Alpha Mu Chapter of Women Educators and also a past member of American Business Women, Lamplighter Chapter, of Freeport. Pat also enjoyed reading, walking and many other activities over the years and she loved to send cards to friends and family. Pat is survived by her sister, Penny Beyer of Freeport; brother-in-law, Steven Beyer of Freeport; nephew, Joey Beyer; and niece, Molly Beyer, both of Tampa, Florida. Preceding her in death were her parents, grandparents and many aunts and uncles. Pat is now at peace in heaven with her very special parents, other loved ones and treasured friends who have gone before her. Much love and thanks go out to her sister, Penny and her loving, special friends and caregivers, Mandy, Norene, Joyce and Deb. Best friends are like stars! You don't always see them, but you know they are always there. Pat touched many lives, young and old throughout her life and will be greatly missed by all who knew and loved her. Especially her friends who will miss her warmth and compassion, her caring thoughtfulness and her smile and laughter.
Per Pat's request a private family service was held before special graveside services on Thursday, November 2, 2017, at Grandview Cemetery in Freeport. I knew your sister through your parents, Del and Joyce. Del and Joyce helped assemble the First News that was mailed to the congregation at First Lutheran. Pat and your mom would bring us cookies as a treat after we were done assembling the
mailing. After your parents passed away she always sent my husband and I a Christmas card every year. I will missed
receiving that card. May God give you comfort knowing many will treasure memories of Pat.

The Mailand Family,

Patsy had the gift to teach. It was the gift God bestowed on her at birth. She was
my daughter's first grade teacher in Lena.
My daughter highly regarded her and was her
favorite teacher. I also highly regarded
her. May God give her family and friends
peace and comfort at this sad time. She
will be truly missed by all who knew and
loved her.

I first met Pat when she was a 5th grader in Center School. She was an excellent student and I was privileged to be her teacher. It was with great joy that I watched her become a teacher and excel as an educator. It was always a joy over the years to see Pat. She was cheerful and so interested in children and teaching. My sympathy goes out to her family. Pat will be missed.

I offer my deepest sympathy to the family! I have many fond memories of our times together at Delta Kappa Gamma meetings. Pat was always such a kind and caring person. We also enjoyed our getting together for coffee in the summers, when we were not teaching. She always had a smile and took the time to visit. Knew her first many years ago, when she was a teller at the bank. She was great with the customers! Always gave you a friendly greeting and asked how you were doing. She'll be sadly missed by so many! Keeping you all in my thoughts and prayers!

Pat and I worked at Midwest Bank together. We worked a lot of Saturday mornings in the drive thru and it became a tradition to get Burger King croissant sandwiches every time we worked together. We became good friends and I enjoyed being with her greatly. We lost touch for several years but recently began writing to each other. I am very saddened to hear she has passed and will miss her. I am sure she is smiling down from heaven.

Pat was an inspiration to my daughter's. She realized their potential and would challenge them to do better. Danielle went from hating school in kindergarten because there was no challenge to becoming the happiest child inspired by Pat. She is a physician today and I credit a lot of it to Pat. Thank you.
