Erwin "Erv" A. Berthold 82, Nebraska City, passed away Tuesday (10/9/07), at his home with his family at his side. Erwin A. Berthold was born on August 15, 1925 in Nebraska City to G. E. and Christina (Guthals) Berthold. Erwin was known by his family and friends as "Erv". On August 15, 1943 Erv entered the Navy and served during WWII. On July 6, 1945, Erv and Reva M. Yeager were united in marriage in Hiawatha, Kan. He received his Honorable Discharge on December 18, 1945 and returned home and graduated from the Nebraska City High School in 1946. Erv and Reva started their family giving birth to two daughters: Linda and Susan and a son Gary. Erv worked in the family business "Berthold Florist and Greenhouse" until he retired in 1983. He was a member of the Bethel United Church of Christ, Elks Lodge 1049, Fraternal Order of Eagles #968, American Legion Post #8 and the VFW. He enjoyed being outdoors hunting and fishing, traveling, collecting WWII memorabilia, Erv was just an outstanding man. Erv passed away on Tuesday, October 9, 2007, at his home with his family at his side, reaching the age of eighty-two years, two months and twenty-four days.
Survivors include his wife, Reva M. Berthold, Nebraska City; son, Gary Berthold and wife Ellen, Nebraska City; two sons-in-law Jack Hobbie and wife Peggy and Bill Fleck, Springfield, Mo.; six grandchildren: Gerald Berthold, Randall Berthold, Richard Berthold, Scott Berthold, Kelly Fairbanks and Jason Fleck; six great grandchildren; brother, Arthur Berthold, Lincoln; two sisters-in-law, Mina Yeager, Nebraska City; and Yvonne Berthold, Grand Island; numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives and many friends. Erv was preceded in death by his parents; daughters, Linda Hobbie and Susan Fleck; grandsons, Shane Fleck and Adam Hobbie; brothers, Otto and Walter "Shorty"; and sisters-in-law, Jean Berthold and Gail Brown Berthold.
Visitation will be held on Friday (10/12/07) from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. with the family greeting friends from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. at the Peterson Mortuary Chapel. Funeral service will be held on Saturday (10/13/07) at 11 a.m. at Peterson Mortuary Chapel, The Reverend Roger Good of the Bethel United Church of Christ officiating. Burial with Full Military Rites will be by the American Legion Post #9 and Nebraska National Guard Honors Funeral Detail at Wyuka Cemetery, Nebraska City. Casket-bearers will be LaVerne "Slick" Baucke, Gerald Berthold, Randall Berthold, Richard Berthold, Scott Berthold, Kelly Fairbanks and Jason Fleck. Memorials may be directed to the choice of the family. Service are entrusted to Peterson Mortuary at 111 North 11th Street in Nebraska City, Nebraska, 68410.
