Daniel Delahunt Obituary

Delahunt, Daniel "Whale" The pipes have called. Pain free at last and rid of cancer after a long, arduous battle on July 23, 2013, age 65, at home in the bucolic Sonoma "wine country" which he so dearly loved. Dan "got away" and has left the party. Reunited at long last with his parents Robert G. and Kathryn "Kay" (nee Flanagan), and numerous other relatives and friends who ascended before him. They all welcomed Dan with BIG bear hugs at those very famous Gates. Among the many left to cherish his memory are his wife of 8 wonderful and fulfilling years Denise McCambridge Delahunt ("Was that a hug?") . . . the BEST years of his life and the answer to many prayers . . . and her children Warren McCambridge (fiancée Jenny) and Yvonne Willis and Dan's dog Simon. Dan will be forever loved and missed by siblings Tom (Shirley), Mary, Patrick and Suzy. He was the generous and loving Uncle Dan to Todd (Stephanie) Delahunt, Terry (Kelly) Delahunt, Andrea Mokros, Chris Mokros and Kiley Shanks. Also deeply loved and missed by scores of Delahunt, Scullin and Crowley cousins and their families. Dan was a 1966 graduate of Shorewood HS and a career "Cross country transportation Engineer" who lived his life with great gusto. Fun loving, inimitable, gregarious, East Side "legend", gentle giant with twinkling eyes, the guy nobody EVER forgot, truly one-of-a-kind only begins to describe our Danny Boy. "May every hair on your head turn into a candle to light your way to Heaven, and may God and His Holy Mother take the harm of the years away from you." Private services have been held in CA. A lively Irish-themed "Celebration of Life" will be held in Milwaukee at a later date. Slainte! Contributions to the American Cancer Society will be appreciated. "Yes, that was a hug!"

I had the honor of talking to Dan on the phone the day before his passing. We worked together for years. He was one of the funniest, most optimistic, people I have ever known. He could always make me smile & laugh. He will be greatly missed. My sympathy to his family.

How beautifully you all embrace the lives of your remarkable family. I'm so honored to have known and advocated for justice with Kay at the Benedict Center and later meeting others of the wonderful Delahunt clan. My warmest thoughts reach out to all of you -- how lovingly you write of Daniel.

Hi, my uncle was Daniel's friend for 40 years and he just heard of his passing. We live in Milwaukee and were just wondering if he could attend his celebration of life. Could you email me back at [email protected]? It would mean the world to him since he is in ill health. Thank you very much.

It gave me great sorrow to hear of the passing of Dan. He was a good friend I had in the 70"s and 80"s the old stone toad on Broadway, there wasn't anything he would not do for his friends! He will always be remembered My sympathies Cindy Simon

Denise & Gary

Gary & I knew Dan for many years in Milwaukee and were fortunate enough to be able to visit with him & Denise a few times over the years on trips to Napa Valley. We were happy to see how much they enjoyed their life together. We were there last July and are so glad we got to spend some quality time together. He lived life BIG and he'll be missed in a BIG way. Our hearts go out to Denise and the rest of his family.

I was rescued by Whale after a divorce in 1995. He was so kind and caring. I loved the nick names he gave everyone. The obit captured him so much. The twinkle in his eyes were always a nice sight to see. I'm glad he found happiness in CA. RIP my friend!

We got to spend Kevin's first birthday with Dan about 1 year ago here in Oregon. My boys were as thrilled by "Big Dan" as my brothers and I were as children. Whether a child's first birthday, a wedding, or family reunion, Dan sure did liven up a party. His big personality and booming laugh will sure be missed!

Big Dan had the big smile, the big heart, the big laugh, everything he ever did was done in a big way it seemed. I didn't know him long enough or well enough, and we crossed paths all too infrequently over the years, but every time I thought of him, the Big Guy made me smile.

My old,old FRIEND Dan was a true one of a kind.Enjoyed life and when he partied everyone did as well !!!The Big Red Head and I were born on the same day,in the same hospital. We went to Kindergarten,St. Robert's, Dominican High ---for one year---and graduated from SHS TOGETHER. The Whaler and I continued to CELEBRATE our common b-day for many more years. Although over the last 25 yrs. we went our separate ways from a local standpoint He will always be one of my oldest and dearest "BUDDIES" in every sense of the word. Pat Lemont Whitefish Bay,Wi.
