Darryl was a special person, full of life, compassion and a desire to be the best that he could be, both as an educator and a caring individual. Our family believes that he fulfilled those qualities, and more.
"A smile, a touch, a gentle laugh remembered,
a voice softly whispered in the wind...."
May the memories of Darryl, held deep within your heart, help to soothe us at this sad time.

To the Levin Family,
I met Darryl soon after he had arrived in Germany and was assigned to one of the "outposts". Although it was isolated, Darryl, as he always seemed to be able to do, made the best of it.
He eventually was transferred to Mainz where we worked together for several years. He was a gifted teacher, talented in so many ways and has left a legacy of memories with so many friends, colleagues and students. As many have already stated, he will be missed.
My sincerest sympathy.

Dear Family of Darryl,
I know you are grieving the loss of Darryl. Our third grade level feels an empty spot in our school where Darryl once taught, but our hearts are full of good memories of him. His classroom was a wonderful place for his students to learn. The way I remember Darryl is as a dedicated, conscientious, and loving educator. He was always ready to bring out the best in his students and colleagues.
May God comfort and bless you now in this sad time.

Kathy and I echo all of the wonderful messages of remembrance that have been written by Mr. Levin's students, their parents, his friends and collegues. We were extremely fortunate to have two of our children, Margot and Hunter, experience Mr. Levin's third grade class at Neubruke Elementary School. We lived in Neubruke for four years and our children attended his school all four years. There was no finer teacher. He taught them many valuable lessons in addition to the mandatory academic requirements. I had a chance to sit in on a few of his classes and I was always impressed by the way he so easily controlled his classroom and, at the same time, made his lessons interesting and fun. His was a rare talent- truely amazing! Our entire family will miss him greatly. May God comfort you during this time. Thank-you for your wonderful son, brother, friend. God bless you. HBS

Dear Precious Levin Family,
I am hnored to have had the opportu;nity to know Darryl for the past 25 years. As a colleague, a friend, a teacher on my staff, Darryl always displayed exemplary human qualities that were emulated by many. He was devoted to his mother, his brothers and his sister-in-laws. He was devoted to his dear and close friends, and his significant friend, Mike. He was devoted to his profession with his students always being in first place in his priorities. He was a role model and a leader for his teacher colleagues, sharing and giving all! Darryl touched over 1000 children during his years of teaching. He also touched over 1000 colleagues who also touched 1000 children. The legacy of Darryl Levin will live on through what he has given to so many, so willingly and so freely. Darryl Levin was an exemplary man and a cherished friend and colleague. It has been my honor to have had him in my life for so many years.
With respect and love,

When I heard of the loss of Mr. Levin I with filled with great sadness. He was such a special person and a great teacher who truly inspired not only my daughter, Katelynn Booth who was in his class last year but he also inspired me. Inspired me to be a teacher at home to my kids he taught me patience and he taught me that old fashioned values are still important today. For example, enforcing his class to eat at least half of their lunch, vegtables and all, and he ate with them. He was truly commited to his students and his teaching. This world is a better place now that he has been here and his teaching will live on in all of us forever. As long as we remember him he will live on in us. I think the greatest thing he has left behind is the example of how we all need to try as hard as he did, and we too shall succeed. His kindness and love will go on without end and everytime I see Mickey Mouse from now on I will think of him with the warmest of thoughts. "Well done thou good and faithful servant".

As many of you know, today a memorial service was held for Darryl Levin on Ramstein Air Base, Germany. As I sat and listened to the wonderful things that everyone had to say, I thought back to one of the last times I spoke to Darryl. It was just after last year's end of the school year party. Darryl and I were talking about what a great year my son Kaleb had under Darryl’s firm but loving guidance. Why is this so unusual you ask? Well, during this conversation, I had time to reflect on just how many times Kaleb came home telling me, “Mr. Levin said this, or Mr. Levin said that”. As you all know this is the surest sign of how much a child respects his or her teacher. Considering just how far Kaleb had come in that year made me rather emotional as it did for Darryl. (We stopped talking before both of us were too teary-eyed.) Right then and there I realized that he loved Kaleb just as much as I do and I also realized just how wonderful a teacher Darryl was. So today, even though we were all deeply saddened as we memorialized his passing, we can now look towards the future and celebrate the fond memories of the man and teacher that was Darryl Levin, for his love and lessons will never be gone from our hearts. Darryl, you left this world a better place...you will be missed.

Dear Mrs. Jane Levin and Levin Family,
My family extends our deepest sympathy to you all, your loss is so great.
Tomorrow is the Memorial service for your dear son and brother, our dear friend and teacher. It will be an opportunity to say good-bye to Darryl as a community. How can we possibly say good-bye to a man that has touched so many of us, each in a unique way, a part of him will always be with us. I am honored to be saying a few words at the Memorial service on behalf of the many parents who were blessed to have their children in Mr. Levin's classroom. His life lessons were planted in so many children and will continue to grow and blossom for a lifetime. He truely left his mark and legacy on the students he loved so much. My son Joseph adored Mr. Levin and respected all that he taught them. He expected the best out of all of us!!! Thank you for believing in us all Mr. Levin, we will always remember you.

I'm very sorry that we all had to lose a wonderful teacher & person. I didn't know Mr.Levin very well, But my daughter Chaslyn talked so highly of him very day after she came home from school. She would always have something to say about him, like what they did in school or things about what he did in his life. He was a great teacher, he pushed Chassy to do so much better in school. I thank him a great deal. I have a couple of pictures of Mr.Levin & Chassy the first day of school & right before he left Germany. I hope you like it.

We are deeply saddened by the loss of your son and brother. Over the years of our DoDDS employment and subsequent retirement, we had the good fortune and pleasure of sharing with him his passion for traveling. He became more than a traveling companion, he became a dear, dear loving friend. We were always impressed with his class and compassion. We absolutely enjoyed his sense of humor and love of life. Mrs. Levin and Family,
My husband and I were deeply saddened to learn of Darryl's passing. As you know, Darryl had such a kind and gentle spirit and was such a blessing to everyone. He truly cared about all people and showed that through his cards, thoughts, and support. I especially remember how much it meant when he and Mike took the time, during the busy month of December, to attend my husband's promotion ceremony to Chief. We were very touched and will forever remember him as the caring, loving person he was. We are so thankful for the blessing of Darryl in our lives. God bless you and keep you, and please know that our thoughts and prayers are with you, your family, and all those whose lives he touched.

Dear Levin Family,
I was so saddened to hear of the passing of your beloved son and brother. My daughter Sarah was in Darryl's class last year and we both loved him dearly. I trully believe he was the most gifted teacher I have ever seen. Darryl's students loved learning because he made it fun. There were many times that we had class parties or activities or Darryl would be reading a story in his dramatic expressive way, the signal for the end of the day came and his students were groaning about having to leave, not rushing to get out the door. That spoke volumes to me every time. Not only was he a wonderful teacher, he was an interesting person to just sit and talk with. He had the most beautiful expressive blue eyes and they would literally twinkle when he talked about things he loved. He was a gem. My daughter Sarah and I were among the many that feel blessed to have crossed paths with Darryl Levin. May he rest in peace and may God send comfort to your family in this difficult time. You are in our thoughts and prayers.

I'm sorry for your loss of your son/brother.
Mr. Levin was a great teacher, a great friend, but most of all, a great person! He always was willing to help others and had a big broad smile on his face. He cared about the people surrounding him and always was willing to give up his time to help students. He helped kids understand about certain dissabilities. He always said that you weren't an American't but an American! (I Can!) He read to us and made us believe in ourselves and to not put others down. He was an inspiration to kids. He thought of himself last and students first. He was an amazing teacher and no matter where he is, he will always be with us in our hearts and in our prayers and we will never forget him! We Love You, Mr. Levin!

I had the privilege of working with Darryl at Ramstein Intermediate School for the past 3 years. It was obvious from the beginning that Darryl was a special person...a teacher who cared deeply about his students, a colleague who supported his fellow educators, a friend always ready with a smile, and a person who delighted in experiencing the world around him. Please know that those of us who have been blessed by Darryl's presence are better people because of him. We will not forget him.

Mrs. Levin,
So sorry to hear about Darryl. I had the pleasure of working in his class as a paraeducator one year and I knew from the first day in there that I wanted him to be our sons third grade teacher. His teaching style and the love he showed his class was wonderful to watch. Always seemed to go the extra mile. Our son thought he was great and couldn't wait to get to his class in the morning.
Again we are sorry to lose such a wonderful teacher and friend.

Dear Levin Family,
Our deepest Sympathy to you on the loss of Darryl. As you read through these entries you will realize how many people loved Darryl and how many lives he has touched world wide. I met Darryl through Mike. I was Mike's primary substitute while I was at RES. Anytime I was in for Mike ,Darryl would always stop by or e-mail me to see if I needed anything. We soon became friends and would even puppy sit Max sometimes when he went on vacation. Darryl was such a wonderful, generous, amazing man, but as an educator we can only say he was a gift to all of us from God. Darryl made Children excited about learning because he was excited about teaching, when others were ready to give up on a kiddo he NEVER would. He always gave all of himself to his kids and his parents. The school day did not end with the dismissal bell for Darryl. Darryl was always there for his kids whether it be before school, lunch or after school. I will always remember Mike saying that he wanted to be like Darryl when he grew up. My daughter Breanna was in Darryl's class last year. Breanna adored him. Darryl made an impression in her life that will last a lifetime. Whenever Breanna has had a paper to write about someone special or at Thanksgiving ,what she was thankful for. Darryl was always the subject.
Telling Breanna about Darryl was one of the hardest things that I've had to do. Through her tears she told me how lucky the children in heaven were to have Mr. Levin as their teacher. We all wish to leave a legacy that we were able to make a difference it at least one person's life. Well, Darryl has made an impression and a difference in my families lives and so many more lives around the world it would be unaccountable. All of our lives are better for knowing Darryl Levin. He will never be forgotten. We love you Darryl.

To the Levin Family,
We were very saddened to hear about Mr. Levin's passing.
My son, Kevin, enjoyed Mr. Levin's Third Grade class this year. He made learning fun for Kevin and he really looked up to him. Kevin thought the world of Mr. Levin and I am glad Kevin had a chance to be in his classroom. Kevin enjoyed going to school every Monday to see Mr. Levin and was excited to participate in the various stations in the room. The highlight of each day was to be able to work with some of Mr. Levin's personal displays he had set up.

I knew Darryl through my very close friend, Lynn Parks. I have memories of him as a young boy. Lynn and I played many childhood games with Darryl and always had lots of fun with him. I only saw him as an adult once a couple of years ago at a dinner party and his good looks and manners had not changed since boyhood. My deepest sympathies go out to his mother, Jane, and his family. He was a real treasure.

On behalf of Darryl's family, I'd like to thank everyone for the kind words and warm memories they're sharing about Darryl. We knew all the wonderful qualities he possessed, and we're so comforted to know you all appreciated the many contributions he made to your lives. Darryl was a wonderful brother-in-law. When my husband, Jeff, first brought me home to meet his family, Darryl welcomed me and made me feel right at home. When my then-fiance took a job in another city prior to our wedding, Darryl helped to fill my lonliness by being a "stand-in" date for movies, plays, musicals, and the like. He and I are about the same age, and I always felt a bond with him; years after we met, we discovered our paths had crossed when our two high schools, which were in two different areas, shared a plane, bus and hotel on our senior class trip - and we discovered this by going through old family pictures at the Levins'!I'll miss Darryl, not only as a brother-in-law, but as a friend who was always supportive and understanding. I'm so glad all of you had the chance to meet and love Darryl. He definitely made a big difference in all of our lives, and will leave a void that will never be filled.

Dear Friends & Family of Darryl:
Steve (his oldest brother) & I were married for 2 years (1976) when Darryl announced his decision to teach in Germany.....so, we only saw him when he returned every other year for a six week visit during his summer vacation. We had the BEST times....art fairs, flea markets, family gatherings, movies...everything a family celebrates in a full year, we did in six weeks. With such pride we were amazed at all of his talents (theatre, culinary, art, teaching skills), plus his ability to bring a smile and laugher to all through his caring and sharing. As we look around our home, it is filled with treasures that Darryl sent to us from wherever he traveled.....his presence is and always will be ever in our lives. His beloved Westie, Max, will be joining our own pet family soon....it is with great honor to fulfill this promise to Darryl.
Our family is overwhelmed with gratitude for all of your loving memories that you are sharing with us.....you have only confirmed what we already knew!
Much love to all, Steve & Marianne Levin

Dear Jane,
It was with a deep sense of loss that I heard of Darryl's death. The fact that I heard about it from four widely scattered sources, in the US, in England and in Germany, all within 24 hours, speaks volumes about the effect he had on lives around the world.
I was Darryl's sponsor when he first came to Nuernberg, Germany and had the privilige of knowing him as colleague, friend and fellow performer in our local community theatre. My goodness, he was talented and looked great doing it too!
Whatever Darryl decided to undertake, in any aspect of his life he always gave it 100%. He will be missed.

Dear Ms. Jane,
I'm not sure where to even begin to tell you how much your son has meant and still means to our family. My son Kaleb was a student in Darryl's class last year. From the first day of school Kaleb, who is sometimes not an easy child to have in the classroom, came home with lots to say about his new teacher (a sure sign that the teacher is ok in Kaleb's book). As the year progressed, Kaleb had his ups and downs but Darryl was the forever constant- always patient, always loving, always committed to teaching my son.Darryl taught Kaleb not just about reading, writing, maths etc, but about what it is to be truly valued, accepted, understood, and loved. Darryl found my son's self esteem, cultured and nutured it and as we watched, a sometimes troubled little boy grew and blossomed under the strength and guidance of a wonderful man. We have seen Darryl periodically since the school year was over. Each and every time,Darryl always had a hug,a REAL hug, to give to Kaleb and Kaleb has never stopped talking about Mr. Levin (I'm sure he never will). Your son has given my son the greatest gifts possible-the gifts of love, trust, and acceptance. As a Para educator, I am eternally greatful for all Darryl did for the kids in his classes but especially for what he did for Kaleb. Darryl will NEVER be forgotton, certainly not in our house and I'm positive not in many, many houses just like ours. Please know we share your grief and we celebrate Darryl's life-the world has lost a truly GREAT man!!!

Darryl was a good man, an excellent teacher and role model for the children with whom he worked. I have known Darryl since moving to Ramstein GE for a short time (one and one-half years), but his warm personality, and humor made the short years seem as if I had known him longer. He is indeed missed, as I know you miss him more. He is in better hands, where there is no more pain or suffering. Wishing you, the family, God’s Love to fill the deep void that is now upon you and His blessings are with you all.

I have had the privilege to work with Darryl Levin for the past five years. He was an outstanding teacher whose greatest concerns were always his students. He liked to work with me giving programs with his classes. He had lots of great ideas! He was always so supportive of the student's efforts.
Darryl was a kind friend. He was a dog lover. We shared stories of our two beloved "Westies", Max and Bonnie many times.
Losing such a dedicated colleague is always difficult, but I will try to remember each day what a legacy Darryl Levin left his students and colleagues. Many years from now some parent will be telling their child about his great 3rd grade teacher, Mr. Levin. That's the best way a teacher can be remembered.

Darryl was one of the most dedicated and professional teachers I've known. In my role as a school psychologist I've seen him work tirelessly to provide a truly individualized educational program for every child in his class, ranging from the highest achiever to the handicapped student. He was a remarkable teacher. Yesterday it was my privilege to spend the morning with his students at Ramstein Intermediate School. Although they were struggling with the loss of their teacher, there was an underlying strength, vitality and spirit that was based at least in part upon their positive, loving and respectful memories of Darryl...and they repeatedly spoke of his sense of humor. I think that's the way they'll remember him - funny, energetic, interested in learning. And, I know he was courageous.

I had the pleasure to know Darryl for several years. He will be greatly missed here at Ramstein. What I remember most about Darryl is that he was a very kind and warm person who loved being a teacher and loved each and every student in his class. It never failed during the summer months when school was out several students would stop by the office to leave pictures and notes for Darryl and once he returned for the new school year he was always happy to see that his former students thought of him. My thoughts are with you.

Mr. Levin was my third grade teacher in the 02-03 school year. He was one of my favorite teachers. His class was very fun but while we were having fun we were learning also. I remember we did banana split multiplication tests where we would have a test on basic multiplication facts. We had 12 tests. Each test would be a different part of a Banana split. You had to get a one hundred to get a piece. I got all one hundred's and I was sick the day of the party. So one day he took the time after school to take me to baskin robins and buy me a banana split. My friend Keenan Plate was also in his class. We had so much fun that year. We did not do young authors but we wrote several books. The last couple of months of school we made hardback books. He was very nice. He always thaught of others before himself. I miss him alot.

Darryl and I met in Nurnberg in the mid 80s. Our friendship has lasted throughout time and distance, and it has been a great source of joy and comfort to me. His passing leaves a great sadness in my heart. The memories of our time together will always be special to me.

It was with great saddness that I felt when I heard of Darryl's death. I have worked with him for more than 15 years and know his dedication to teaching and his students. Ms. Jane,
My daughter was Mr. Levin's student this school year. I don't know if you'll read these, or are even aware they exist. Please know the following about your son: Lunchtime for him wasn't about rushing the kids off. He sacrificed half his lunch period to walk amongst his class making sure they ate well before going out to play--only then would he return to his classroom to partake in his own meal. He was the ONLY teacher to do this and it struck me as...well...pretty darn wonderful. Daily after school found him at the crosswalk, escorting children safely...but also surrounded by past students who just HAD to share some tidbit from their lives. Waiting for my daughter, always I observed your son forever surrounded by students vying for his attention. This speaks volumns about a teacher...about a person. In class, he didn't just have the students do activities--he participated...even if it meant dressing up (fiesta day found him in paper sarape designed by the kids, and the biggest hat I've EVER seen in my life).
And, Ms. Jane...he was fiesty. He stood right up to we the parents, stood up for those kids, and stood up for his belief in how teaching should be done.
Ms. Jane? If he were a son equal to how he effected students through teaching...you not only were very blessed...but pat yourself on the back..you did good.
As one mother to another, I am so sorry for your loss. We aren't supposed to bury our children...regardless their age. Find peace that your son's name will live on in memory over here at Ramstein for a VERY long time.
Thank you for sharing him with us that my daughter was able to know him and have him as her teacher/mentor.

I have many great memories from childhood with Darryl. I always looked up to him. When I came to college in Madison, he was a senior and I was a freshmen. He was always helpful to me. I am so sorry he was taken from us. I remember one time when he came to visit in Madison with Nana after I was married. Susan, Darryl, Nana, Jane, and I went to the Concerts on the Square. It was a lot of fun and some guy even tried to dance with Nana. Darryl was a wonderful, loving son and brother. He loved teaching. He will be missed.
