Dear Hauer family, I am so sorry for your loss. I will always remember Paul as a kind, sensitive, and intelligent person both in high school and beyond. Paul completed law school just as I was starting, and his words of encouragement and his own accomplishments served as an inspiration for me during some challenging times. I hope that you will find comfort in your memories and pride in having such a special person in your lives.

Mother Hauer, your remarks were deeply Christian and profoundly wise. You have lost a splendid son and
focus with gratitude for God's gift of your years with Paul rather than on anger for his parting.

In all the years that I worked with Paul, he never changed. He was serious about his work but found time to be friendly and interact - imparting information and a moment of laughter from time to time. I offer my condolences to the Hauer family. I pray that the memories of Paul give you some peace and I pray that God will give you His peace, His love and His joy as you go through this trying time.

My condolences to Paul's family. I worked with Paul at Children's Court and we had fun teasing one another. Paul was a quick wit and had a ready smile. I think we worked together on his last jury trial, and I was on a case with Paul the day before he died. His death is a great shock. Paul was a good man. He will be missed by many.

I remember being drawn to a sculpture when I first visited the Hauer family home. I was astonished to find out that it was done by Paul and not a famous artist. Paul was exceptional in everything he did and yet humble and so kind. He will be missed. I pray for patience and strength to his beautiful family and friends during this difficult time.

My deepest sympathies to Paul's lovely and loving family-
Most of my memories of high school have Paul in them. Such a talented, smart, sensitive, and genuine person who was one of a kind. I will remember his artistry, compassion, and sense of humor. He called Student Council meetings to order with a meat tenderizer. He was wise beyond his years. He was kind. He was thoughtful. He was creative in every way. I'm so glad that I knew him and had him as a good friend, and I am so terribly sad to know that he is gone. Please know that I am holding your family in my heart in a special way along with my many memories of Paul.

I moved into the apartment next to Paul three years ago, and within the first week I was here he took the time to get to know me and make me feel welcome. I was new to town and didn't know anyone yet, so Paul took it upon himself to be my first friend in the city, and I'll never forget that. We didn't talk often over the years, but when we did he was always exceptionally kind and generous. He was a great neighbor, and he's terribly missed.

Please accept the condolences of all of us who have had the pleasure of having Paul in our lives. He was a true mensch. Just wanted to tell you how kind and generous he was and how he was known for his great quirky sense of humor, his empathy for all he encountered in his law practice, and his collection of this and that in his office and the trunk of his car. Thankfully he saved this damsel in distress with a dead battery in below zero weather at the courthouse. I miss him terribly.

I am so very sorry to hear the passing of Paul. I worked with him at Children's Court for several years. Prior to that, I worked with him in criminal court. As a defense attorney, I was usually on the opposite side of Paul. He never made it feel that way.
Paul was professional, smart, compassionate, and had a great sense of humor. When he walked into a room, he always had a smile.
Among his many talents, he tutored me how to polish my shoes. His advice was top notch. He always had the shiniest shoes in court.
Paul was the person you could lean on if you were having a bad day. He genuinely cared about others. He will be greatly missed.
My prayers are with your family.

The year I directed theatre at Dominican, Paul was my Pippin’. He was so talented and easy to work with throughout our rehearsal time. I often wondered what became of him. I am so sorry for your loss~~ and also for the community he served. God Bless you all.

Paul was a classic prosecutor and a great co-worker— He was smart and patient and ever-giving of his time and he was quick-witted without being quick-tongued. He had a wry humor that was clever without being cutting.

One quick story: maybe 2 or 3 years ago I brought my kids in to work on a day off school. They were maybe 7 and 5 at the time. Anyways I was working on something and my little terrors were running around alternatively talking too much and being too shy. And we ran into Paul, who was so nice to them. Or really me—he said something to them about what I do, and I wish I could remember the quote but it was words to the effect of “do you know how important your dad’s work is/how good he is at it?” It was just an angle I would never think to talk about to someone else’s kid about their work—but it was such a generous thing to do. My kids looked at my job differently after that. I’ve always remembered that and when I meet other co-worker's kids and I try (but fail because I’m not Paul) to pass to their children the point that their parents are doing important/special work.

I'm very sorry that all I can say to you now is Paul's question to my kids-- "do you know how important your son's work was and how good he was at it?" I hope so. He was a hero who will always be missed.

I had the privilege of taking nearly all my classes at Dominican with Paul. He was intelligent, funny, kind, and a true friend. Senior year he played the scarecrow in The Wizard of Oz, and junior year, he held the title role in Pippin. I really enjoyed getting to know him behind the scenes. He will be missed.

Dear Hauer Family,

I loved working with Paul. He always told great stories such as getting kicked out of preschool at age 3 , when he graduated from law school they were lined up and he wasn’t in the correct place and when he received his diploma and had to sign his name and bar # he was signing on the girl behind him. Paul was a great story teller and he will be missed

Paul we had so many funny little interactions. My favorite was I was using the paging system at Childrens Court for the first time and it felt weird to just hang up so my mind automatically said "goodbye." You called me laughing and said, "goodbye to you." I'm sure no one else will think this is funny but it's just one of so many times you made the day a lighter brighter. You will be missed here at the Vel.
