Alice Poor Obituary

Longtime Douglas resident Alice E. Poor, 94, passed away peacefully in Seattle on October 17, 2012. She was born in Effie, Minnesota, on June 22, 1918, daughter of Joseph and Della Rahier.
Alice and her husband, Val, were married in Minneapolis, Minnesota, on August 29, 1939. After an extended honeymoon they traveled to Alaska and settled in Juneau. While her husband worked in the AJ gold mine Alice was busy helping to dismantle an old mining house in Thane that they had purchased for $50. Materials from this house were used to build their first house on Fifth Street in Douglas. Many local miners volunteered to help in building their home.
In 1943 Alice found herself working from 8 am to 10 pm, 7 days a week when she and Val purchased the Douglas Drug Store and Post Office. In 1975 she was honored as "Alaska's Outstanding Postal Employee". She was, also, an active member of Eastern Star, a member of Pioneers of Alaska, and was the last surviving charter member of the Douglas Community United Methodist Church. She loved her family, knew about hard work, and took pride in everything she did. In 1976 she retired and spent 10 wonderful years traveling with her husband across the country in a fifth wheel making friends wherever they went. They would always return to their beach cabin on Lena Beach. Alice was, also, a major supporter of the Treadwell Ice Arena. The Arena Zamboni proudly displays her name.
Alice was preceded in death by her husband of 59 years, Val and a daughter Della who died of whooping cough at the age of 11 months. She outlived her brothers Jack, Vince, Elwyn, and Doug Rahier and her sisters Beatrice Hastings and Dorothy Distel. Surviving family members are daughter Danna and sons Joe, Woody, Richard, and Bob. Alice has 11 loving grandchildren, 19 great grandchildren and 2 great great grandchildren.
Alice's ashes will be placed next to her husband's at the Alaska Memorial Park in Juneau. A special memorial service will be held at the Douglas Community United Methodist Church on Saturday, November 17, 2012.
In lieu of flowers donations can be made to the Douglas Community United Methodist Church, P.O. Box 240509 Douglas, Alaska 99824.

Our childhood days in Douglas were richer with the loving influence of our neighbors, Alice and Val Poor, and each of their wonderful children. We so wished we had been at the memorial service today as you each lovingly honored your mother. We carry and treasure you in our hearts. Rebecca, Bunny, and Butch Bennett.

I will always remember your mom's warm smile. I was blessed to have her in my church family.

I see her being greeted by people who cared for her on Earth in Heaven. Claudia Kelsey with her joyful smile, Esther Olson with a beautiful song and Sig Olson with a comment about what a beautiful day it is. Your dad is there with a big hug and a hankie to dry your mother's tears at leaving behind her loved ones.

One of the most beautiful and gracious women I have known. Alice and Val were my parent's best friends for many years beginning in the late 1940's and whether it was being an awesome hostess, giving neighbor, cheerful postmaster, fabulous mother, wonderful wife, dedicated church volunteer, outstanding fisher woman, committed friend, strong community organizer, devoted grandmother, and so much more---she always gave it her very best and was--- along with her husband and my parents-- a superior role model who made a strong and lasting impact on my life. Alice-- you will be remembered and missed .

I, too remember Alice Poor and her family with love. First met her at the drugstore in 1957 where she was so helpful to a newcomer to Alaska. I also remember her (and Val) well from Eastern Star where we were both members and officers. She was a lovely person--as much of the tapestry of Douglas history as the Treadwell Mine. (I also remember Richie being my little paperboy, and Dana as a teen on stage at a Douglas Halloween Fair in a swim suit!) Many nice memories.

Mrs. Poor, never became Alice to me once I reached adulthood. She was always a very nice lady I remember from attending many Eastern Star potlucks with my parents, and the friendly mother of her children who remain friends to this day. My memory will always be of a friendly, dignified lady, one of Douglas's matriarchs and truly a standout of "the greatest generation."

Although I remember Alice from the little Post Office in Douglas (and store) as a young girl, when I started volunteering with the Douglas Senior Center, she was a part of that lunch group and it was so interesting to hear her speak of old Juneau and when she and Val were young people starting a life in Douglas. She was greatly missed when she moved to Seattle and I will always remember her as a dear member of the Douglas community. Sincere condolences to Alice's family.
