Carolyn Evans Obituary

Evans, Carolyn Faith, left this earth to be with our Lord and Saviour on Saturday, October 18, 2014 at the age of 71, forty years after first being diagnosed with Hodgkin's Lymphoma cancer. Carolyn additionally survived breast cancer, lymphoma of the lung, aortic valve stenosis & surgery, three strokes, and numerous vascular complications from her initial radiation therapy. Despite these challenges, Carolyn accepted each one with grace and the Faith that the Lord was with her. Known for her perseverance and generosity, Carolyn consistently chose to help others. Carolyn was born December 1, 1942 in Los Angeles, California while her father was serving in WWII. After the war, her family returned to Altamont, KS where her father and his brothers resumed the family business of farming. She attended Kansas University in Lawrence, KS from 1960-1962 initially studying Nursing then Spanish. While attending a Baptist Student Campus Ministry she met Roger Evans, who was actually at the wrong Baptist Campus Ministry, as there were two on campus at the time. God obviously took this misguided young man to where his future wife would be. They were married June 24, 1962 in Altamont, KS. They then returned to Kansas City where Roger finished medical school. In 1964, Carolyn received her PHT (Putting Hubby Through) award and Roger received his MD. She volunteered many times with Army Service Wives and church and evangelism opportunities. Entering the Army, Roger and Carolyn moved to Madigan Army Hospital, Fort Lewis Washington, where Sharon was born Jan. 7, 1967. And Roger Evans Jr. was born June 27, 1968. That summer they were reassigned to Fitzsimmons Army Hospital in Denver. In 1971, they were reassigned to Honolulu. In 1974, after 10 years of active duty in the Army, following her husband, they moved to Lacrosse, Wisconsin where she continued her ministry at church and with Child Evangelism Fellowship. While in Lacrosse, in 1975, she was diagnosed with Hodgkin's Cancer around her heart. Two years later, after completing radiation and chemotherapy, a good friend took her for a short flight over the hills of Wisconsin after church one Sunday afternoon. She got the bug for flying and much to Roger's surprise passed her FAA medical. She had her license before Roger and when they flew to Altamont for a family reunion. Roger stayed on the ground while Carolyn, the pilot, flew all the relatives over town. She subsequently earned her twin engine and instrument ratings. In 1979, Carolyn and Roger moved back to their home state of Kansas and have resided in the same home since then. Having never obtained a college degree, Carolyn nevertheless upon returning to Wichita, resumed her study of Spanish, ruining the curve for students who were taking Spanish as a required course. She used her Spanish while she and Roger served in an inner-city, cross-cultural church, Hilltop Urban Church, near St. Joseph Hospital, where they have attended for the last 25 years. She served as a translator on medical mission trips to Ecuador and Honduras where she was known as "Senora Doctor" because she asked the patients all the questions in El Salvador she was the liaison for a construction team from Wichita and had to learn the difference between concrete and cement. At Hilltop, she was a member of the worship team, playing her flute which she had learned in high school and had taken with her on various mission trips to Africa and Ecuador. Carolyn had a passion for travel, which she learned from her parents who camped with a VW bus. She planned some of the most brilliant vacations with and for her family and friends, including Ecuador and the Galapagos Islands, Alaska and most recently, Iceland; but cherished her times alone with Roger in Alaska most of all. Carolyn has always sewn, made the kids clothes and curtains for her home, but she was best known for her amazing ability to quilt, even earning a blue ribbon at the Kansas State fair for her "Memory Quilt". However, over the past ten years, she faced a new illness challenge every several years; including a second cancer, several surgeries, and several small strokes, each interfering with her ministry service and all the things she loved to do. After fighting the good fight against pneumonia and kidney failure, Carolyn courageously stood in line, and once beckoned forward, was promoted to Heaven. Carolyn was the cherished daughter of the late Kenneth Herold of Altamont, KS, and the beloved wife of 52 years to Dr. Roger W. Evans, Sr. of Wichita, KS. Carolyn is survived by her mother, Ethel Herold, Parsons, KS, her husband, Dr. Roger W. Evans and their children; Sharon (Shay) and Roger Jr., their spouses Zack Cosgrove and Amber Evans, 8 grandchildren, Zander and Dagny Cosgrove, Michael, Billy, David, and Austen Eckel and Ashley and Roger Evans III, and a great grandson Kaleb Eckel, treasured siblings Cleora Ulbrich, Girard, KS; Judy Herold, Kansas City, KS; Kenny Herold, Jr., Altamont, KS; and Patty Benton, Garnett, KS; as well as numerous aunts, nieces, nephews, cousins and in-laws. She will be sadly missed by her many relatives and friends in her various circles of influence, in her family Church and community. The family asks that in lieu of flowers donations be given in Carolyn's honor to Hilltop Urban Church, 910 S. Bluffview Dr., Wichita, KS 67218. A memorial service will be held 1:00 p.m., Saturday, November 1, 2014 at First Evangelical Free Church with inurnment taking place at the Altamont Cemetery at the Thanksgiving Family gathering. Dr Evans and Family
She will be dearly missed. I will always remember her smiling at your side. She loved telling stories about your marathons and your mission trips. The world has lost a good "soldier" for Christ but Heaven has gained a new angel. God Bless you all.

She was a wonderful person, having successfully come through so many obstacles. Her middle name of FAITH was perfect. Your "write-up" of her life is very well done! Glad we got to see her in June at the reunion.

Dr Evans was my husband (Dale Marcy) cardiologist for many years. One day while my husband was in Dr Evans office, the doctor kept looking through his desk and etc. Finally my husband asked , are you looking for something?
Dr replied I cant locate my airplane key and need it this afternoon. Soon the telephone rang , it was the doctors wife , she had found his needed key at home. My husband and Dr Evans had many great visits about their families, Dr Evans had a very special relationship with his precious wife.
My prayers and love, June Marcy, Valley Center KS

Bob and I met Roger and Carolyn while attending Hilltop Urban Church. Carolyn always displayed God's love, kindness and gentleness. She lived the life God called her to and did it gracefully. She showed her faith by her works and the love she had for family, friends and her church family. It was a privilege to know Carolyn the four short years we attended Hilltop. May you find peace and comfort in knowing she is with the Lord she has loved and served.

Praying for you,
