Timothy Hellman Obituary

Timothy Dean Hellman

December 10, 1956 - May 18, 2025

Wichita, Kansas - Timothy Dean Hellman, age 68, lifelong resident of Wichita, Kansas, passed away on May 18, 2025, in Nathrop, Colorado. Born on December 10, 1956, Tim's zest for life and enduring spirit touched everyone he met. He leaves behind a legacy of love, generosity, and a passion for living that will be fondly remembered and deeply missed.

Tim was preceded in death by his parents, Harold and Catherine Hellman, and a grandchild, Elizabeth Roy. He is survived by his devoted wife of 43 years, Brenda Hellman of Wichita; his daughter, Heather Roy; his son, Chris (Kate) Hellman, both of Overland Park, KS; his brother, David Hellman; and his sister, Amy (Richard) Martin, both of Wichita. He was a cherished grandfather to Annelise Roy, and Matt and Nora Hellman.

A proud graduate of Wichita South High School's Titan Class of 1974, Tim went on to earn a Bachelor of Arts degree in Geology from Wichita State University in 1980. His passion for geology paved the way for a distinguished career as a Petroleum Geologist. He began his career as an intern at Raymond Oil Company, Inc. in 1976, then as a staff geologist following WSU graduation and later became Exploration Manager. In 1997, he channeled his years of knowledge and experience into founding Lotus Operating Company.

His professional expertise and leadership were recognized by his service on numerous boards including the Kansas Independent Oil & Gas Association, Kansas Geological Society, and Kansas Geological Foundation, where he was a charter member in 1989 and most recently President from 2023 until his passing. His passion for the petroleum industry coupled with his desire to bring people together was evident through his long-standing involvement with the Petroleum Club of Wichita, where he held various roles, including President for 17 years.

A man of unspoken faith, Tim was a member of St. Elizabeth Ann Seton Catholic Church since 1983 and later joined St. Catherine of Siena Catholic Church in 2008. He also held fond memories of his time at Bethany Lutheran Church in his younger years.

Beyond his professional pursuits, Tim's passion for life was evident in his hobbies and interests. A lifelong enthusiast of motorsports, Tim began racing go-karts at age 14 and competed in Sports Car Club of America, racing a Formula Ford at age 17 and later other classes. He was a proud member of the SCCA and the Porsche Club of America. His passion for cars led to the fulfillment of owning his own collection. He enjoyed nearly four decades of friendly competition in his Wednesday night bowling league and his love of a fine cigar, wine and conversation shared with friends were a few of his favorite pastimes. His ability to provide a good time with his wit and humor will be one of the many ways he will be remembered.

While he loved traveling the world with Brenda, summers and Christmases joyously spent with family at the Hellman cabin in Colorado were a testament to his love for family and creating lasting memories.

Since Tim was unable to serve in the military, he had a strong interest and utter respect for those who served, were wounded, or sacrificed their lives for love of our country.
