Although I only knew Bob Sr. and the Ortons for just a few short years as a teenager, I will always remember when Bob would come looking for Barry (Burr) in KC. He would always drive up, wait in the car until one of us kids would answer his blaring horn. "Have you seen Barry?" he would inquire. "You know my hands are registered lethal weapons?" Of course, he would have a silly little grin on his face as if he knew we knew he was just tormenting us in his own way, but none of us kids actually took this as a threat! Sometimes follwing the lethal weapons comment, he would reach under the drivers seat to show us what he considered to be leagl protection (or intimidation). The band used to also practice out at the house on 110th but would have to evacuate quickly when Bob got home or needed the space to work out.
Rhonda and Barry, doubt you remember me but sorry for the late condolences, It has been many, many years and I just stumbled on this surfing the web.

Bob, I miss your weekly calls to me every Saturday and Sunday. They meant more than words can ever express. Even if you did call me 4-5 times in a weekend and say "Hey Kid ... whats the world coming to" I didn't mind. My phone is very quiet now and very lonely. I keep in touch with Rhonda and Rita as often as I can and we share that same love and understanding that you and I had.
Please hold the ring ropes open for me when I am called to that big arena in Heaven and tag me in when it's my time.

Bob-
Beyond a wrestling legend, you have set a place in the hearts of all those you have touched. Thanks for allowing me to be your 'sidekick' at the Wrestling Hall of Fame in 2005 when Bob Jr. was inducted. I still smile and laugh as I think about your humor, side comments, and telling it like it is! I'm fortunate to have befriended your family and glad that we have and will continue to have a great friendship. With love buddy, Erik

Bob and I used to reveal some very private thoughts during our conversations. Some things stand out as my favorite things he told me.
First and foremost were how much he loved his family and how much he worried about them.
Second was, as a teenager, he would tell me about Rita and how she had the most beautiful figure of any girl he had ever looked at.
Then he would recall how when the family was on vacation one time and visited Elvis Presley’s home in Memphis. He struck up a conversation with the caretaker who gave Rhonda and Bobby a ride around the estate on his golf cart. I think he was related to Elvis. After finding out that Bob was a professional wrestler he said that Elvis was napping and if Bob would bring his family later in the day he would introduce them to Elvis. Bob said he was in a hurry and decided to not take him up to meet The King. Bob said that Rhonda was so broken hearted that she cried for a hundred miles. Bob regretted not staying so that Rhonda could meet him and he never forgave himself. These things Bob told me about more than a few times.
We loved you Bob,
George VanDyne, from Armourdale, Kansas
George VanDyne
January 7, 2007
When Bob and I first met (in the Armourdale district in Kansas City, Kansas) he was about 12 or 13, I was a year older. We both went to Central Junior High School. Bob, John Forgerty and I used to wrestle in the yard beside my house. We had a lot of fun and whenever we could we went to Memorial Hall in Kansas City, Kansas. I had a cousin who was a ticket taker and we could go through acting like we handed him our tickets and once inside we usually managed to get a seat close up to the ring. I only remember one time when we were able to get into the dressing room of Antoine Leon (spelling?). He told us he had graduated from Brown University, I had never heard of it or that it was an Ivy League college. Bob told me years later that Antoine was from a wealthy family and they had virtually disowned him for becoming a professional wrestler. Bob used to tell me about some of the people he had met in his wrestling career; people like Joe Lewis, Heavyweight champion of the world. Mr. Lewis had been a referee at some of Bob’s matches and told Bob that he should have become a prize fighter because he had the quickest hands he had ever seen on a man. Bob also had driven from Chicago with Jack Dempsey, another world champion prizefighter, to some wrestling matches in Illinois and Bob thought Mr. Dempsey was such a fine man.
Once when Bob was 16 his parents bought him a new Harley Davidson motorcycle and when Bob was sitting on it in front of his parents tavern he said he wanted to ‘show off’ so he gunned it had went into a U turn. Only he misjudged his turn and he drove through the concrete block wall of a Sinclair filling station across the street. Bob got his picture in the local newspaper for that. Another time Bob and another of his friends we driving across the 7th street Bridge, connecting Armourdale and Argentine and they saw a woman climb onto the railing and jump off into the river. The bridge must have been 50 feet above the water, they drove to the end of the bridge and then back to the levee and his friend, I’ve forgotten his name, jumped into the river and saved her from drowning, and they got their pictures in the paper for that one also. Bob was almost blessed with being able to be where the action was.
Bob and I used to go swimming at the Kansas City, Kansas YMCA that was when the boys had to swim in the nude. I never could figure that one out. But we did it. That reminds me of another time when Bob, some others and I were out hiking on a hot summer day and we came to a stream. One of the boys said he had swam there before and even though the water had a thick scum of ugly green algae on it he said that when we got in and stirred it up we wouldn’t be able to see it because the water would be so muddy. He was right!
We were members of the Kansas City, Missouri YMCA in our late teens and one of our friends, John Clemet (spelling?), Bob and I would most always stop at the soda fountain at the Pickwick hotel just a block away from the Y and get a Malt with an egg in it after our workouts. Now John was a powerfully built young man even though he was about a foot shorter that Bob and I and we all loved to flirt with the girls who worked there. Until one night one of the girls referred to John as that little fat guy. We razzed John for that no end. Bob and John went to the same high school, Wyandotte High, and he and John used to do hand to handstands in the hall to show off for all the girls. They were good at it too. In the typing class Bob was the fastest typist there, and that’s with the old mechanical typewriters, he could type about 80 words a minute… quick hands again.
A couple of years ago I was invited by Bob to come stay with him and go to the Cauliflower Ear Club convention in Las Vegas. Bob had to use a crutch by then and we had a wheelchair that I pushed him around in. Many young and some not so young came up to talk with him He was a good mentor and teacher for the wrestlers.
I remember Bob like he was my brother.
I loved you Bob.
Your old friend George

Big Bob Orton.....I met Bob through my husband, Pedro Godoy. Pedro was very impressed with Bob not only in his wrestling abilities but his future ways of thinking and living. Bob was one of the first wrestlers to earn his pilot's license. Bob was the first person we knew that purchased bottled water.... years before it became fashionalbe. He even chose Las Vegas as a retirement location many years before anyone else realized the advantages to living there. These are just a few of the many ways that Bob was ahead of his time.
Bob's abilities in the wrestling ring were truly skilled. His desire to be the best was something he never took for granted. He worked hard and never forgot the ones that took the time to guild and teach him his chosen trade. Mentors like Hans Hermann, Larry Simon and a few select others. Bob would listen to those that he respected and then study what insight they would share with him. He would share memories of people and events that happened in his life as if it was just yesterday.
Pedro enjoyed his adventures he had with Bob in the ring or even the adventures that they experienced on the road. They spent many hours traveling together or just talking in the locker rooms. Pedro and Bob shared a common love for the business and those who were true friends and loyal ones. Both Bob and Pedro held loyalty very high on their measuring of a person's caliber.
Bob was proud of his wife and children. He often commented on the great job that Rita was able to accomplish with raising of the children while he was on the road. Bob wanted the children to have as normal of childhood as possible with their father being in the wrestling world. I think that Bob and Rita did a wonderful job rearing their three kind and very respectable children.
In the past few years Bob has included me as one of the friends that he would telephone on the weekends. I so miss hearing him say "Hey Kid! What's going to happen to the world?". And from there the adventure would cover world events, history, health and love of the wrestling world and the gifts that he received in life.
Yes, Bob was one of a kind. I'm thankful for having known him and will miss him greatly. His friendship and telephone calls helped me keep Pedro's memories alive. Their departure has left a large void for many of us, but rather than sorrow I have joy for having been in their company.
God Bless Bob and his wonderful family and friends who will miss him until we join him in heaven.

I would just like to send a simple condolence to the Orton family. Growing up with an older brother had a huge influence on what I'd watch. We'd stay up late on Saturday nights watching wrestling. I was the only girl around who knew everything about the WWF. We enjoyed watching Cowboy Bob Orton, he'd always keep us entertained. I don't think I ever watched Bob Orton Sr. wrestle, but the recent video I have seen proves him to be a great man. And now I pass this tradition on to my son who watches the next generation, Randy Orton wrestle! I send this today, for my brother, because if not for him, I wouldn't be writing this.
I would also like to send condolences to the Orton family from family friend, Barry Feist, who tried effortlessly to locate this guestbook. Thank you B.
Thank you Orton family.
Sincerely,
Carol Needelman

Hi everybody. I was shocked to read about Uncle Bob's passing. He was the "famous" uncle that (my brothers) Karl and Kurt and I used to brag about when we were kids.
Rhonda- you and Aunt Rita were a blessing to me when Mom was sick. I know it was more than special to her when you visited and I thank you so much.
I pray that your family will mend and I know that he will live on in memories,
Love, Annie and family

I'm so sorry to hear of Bob's death. My wife and I will never forget the day we spent with him and Rhonda at Wrestlemania 21, thanks to Barry.
When we arrived at the arena, Ric Flair came up, grinning, and shook Bob's hand, asking "How ya doin', young man?" While we watched matches on video monitors with other family members and guests, Susan and I saw Bobby Heenan and Roddy Piper, among others, come over to pay their respects to Bob. He seemed to command everyone's affection and respect.
On the limo ride over Bob told Susan and me stories of his career. Having grown up on San Francisco wrestling in the 1970s, I wasn't familiar with his career, so I put Bob's tales of sold-out arenas and incredible heat generated through the "50% wrestler discount" -- memory has a way of improving things for all of us, and perhaps even more so for people whose success depends on their ability to work fans like me.
Then when Bob died, I read online and in the Observer about his career. The sold-out arenas and the incredible heat generated were true.
Rest in peace, Bob.
Barry and Rhonda, Susan's and my thoughts are with you.

As a friend/sister to Rhonda for 30 years, I also had the privilege to know and spend time with Bob, Berry, and Rita, from Amarillo then in Vegas. I must say, I've not seen a more welcoming, loving and cohesive family. I tell you the truth, they are sincerely hospitable to all they meet. I will miss Bob for his very unique ways and wonderful humor. I also see these present in Rhonda and Berry, I have not met Bobby, though I know he too must be! Bob will be missed greatly by many for his kindness and his entertaining ways. He certainly passed these on to his children, who are much like him. I am thankful to have known him as as individual who has loved much. May God bless and comfort you always. Becky Deckard

In My Pocket
I have memories in my pocket.
They rattle among the change.
My memories of you are treasures I carry wherever I go.
They are stored in bits and pieces, parts of a beautiful whole
They give me comfort when I think I am alone.
Yes, I have memories in my pocket, like so much other stuff I keep there.
But of all the treasures I have, it’s the memories of you that are the most precious.
