Dick Purdy Obituary

Dick Purdy
April 11, 1934 - October 6, 2022
Green Valley, Arizona - The world lost a great husband, father, grandfather, great grandfather, coach, educator, innovator, mentor and friend Thursday evening, October 6th, when Richard 'Dick' Purdy passed away at the age of 88, following a series of complications after contracting Covid-19 in June.
Dick was born on April 11th, 1934 in Kansas City, Missouri, the only child of Shelby and Mabel Purdy. His love of sports started early in the boulevard parks on The Paseo, near his boyhood home on 67th Terrace. Dick's football coaching inspiration grew while playing for legendary Southeast High School coach Cecil Patterson. He also played basketball for the Knights and became enthralled with math in the classroom. Summers were filled with baseball, culminating with memorable years in the Ban Johnson League, playing for Les Milgrams' team and Boy Scouts, where he achieved Scouting's highest rank of Eagle Scout.
In the Fall of 1952, Dick enrolled at Baker University in Baldwin, KS to continue his football career as Quarterback for the Wildcats and passion for mathematics, enjoyed the beginning of life long relationships with the men of Delta Tau Delta, while on a path to meet the love of his life, Norma June Norris from Shawnee Mission, KS. Dick and Norma married 4 years later on August 26th, 1956.
Following graduation, Dick and Norma moved to Chetopa, KS, where he started his coaching and teaching career for two years. The next nine years were enjoyed in Chanute, KS, with Dick coaching the Blue Comets, earning his Masters in Mathematics from Pittsburg State in 1963, along with the birth of son Brian in 1959, daughter Pam in 1962 and son Stuart in 1965. Shawnee Mission West in suburban Kansas City was his longest coaching stop of 14 years starting in 1967, which included four State Championship appearances and his first Kansas Large Class State Championship in 1972. Dick loved building the Viking culture with a special group of coaches and faculty, many who went on to tremendous success throughout Kansas City. In 1982 he followed career curiosity and spent two years on the University of Kansas staff, where he realized his love of Friday Night lights and growing young men was his purpose. He re-entered the high school ranks at Lee's Summit, MO for seven years, where he and his special staff led the Tigers to their first ever Missouri Large Class State Championship game in 1986.
Dick's final stop coupled a legendary coach with a tradition rich Kansas high school football team. Coach and his cherished staff led the Lawrence High Chesty Lions to five State Championships over his final 9 years of coaching. His six Kansas State Titles and lifetime record of 275-140-5 lifted him into the Kansas Sports Hall of Fame, Kansas Football Coaches Hall of Fame, Greater Kansas Football Coaches Hall of Fame and many other professional acknowledgments and awards over the years.
Following retirement in 2000, Dick and Norma moved to Green Valley, AZ, where they enjoyed the warm winters and joined dear friends from their past. There they continued their love of being outdoors, enjoying jazz concerts and traveling the North American coastlines to experience over 290 lighthouses. Their passion for lighthouses led them to serving the National Park Service for multiple summers, hosting the Cape Outlook Lighthouse tours and managing the Visitors Center on Harker's Island, NC.
Being the eternal athlete, Dick played golf and softball into his 80's. His greatest personal retirement joy came from playing in the BAJA Sporting Club Softball leagues, where he played and coached until last year. They traveled throughout the Southwest, playing in tournaments and enjoying the comradery that only teammates can appreciate.
Dick's biggest professional satisfaction was mentoring his many coaches and over 2,000 players, watching their outstanding accomplishments in collegiate and professional football throughout his 41 years on the sidelines, in addition to being a foundation for many young men in their personal and professional journeys.
His personal pride always blossomed when he spoke of his partner in life, Norma. They were 'two peas in a pod', supporting each other through life's journey. He made life magical for his family, with memories held onto for a lifetime. Dick was always there for others, offering his help, one of his long stories or maybe his favorite, cookies and milk.
Dick is survived by his amazing wife of 66 years, Norma. Son Brian and his wife Leslie of Dallas, TX, Grandson Jonathan, wife Emily and Great Grandson Jackson Howell of Dallas, TX. Granddaughter Alex Purdy Dubois and husband Ben, Great Granddaughter Winn Rosalie and Great Grandson Harris Steven of Houston, TX. Daughter Pam Wright of Fayetteville, AR. And son Stuart and wife Jeannie of Inverness, IL, Grandson Preston and his wife Kristina of Chicago, IL, Granddaughter Maclaine of Chicago, IL and Grandson Wesley of Inverness, IL
A celebration of Dick's life will take place this Saturday, October 15th at 1 PM PST in the United Methodist Church of Green Valley, AZ. A live stream and a recorded stream following the service will be available at umcgv/youtube.com.
With a tip of the hat to the countless physicians who helped Dick through his multiple heart challenges, Coach asks for any donations be made to the American Heart Association in his name at heart.org

I was sad to hear Coach Purdy passed away.
He was a great man and a legendary football coach in Kansas. I was a Field Judge and always worked his sideline and got to listen to him coach his kids. Always calm and positive and his kids played with the same attitude. He always seemed to be one step ahead of the opposing coaches. My most memorable game was the comeback win against Derby in the State Championships. It's still considered one of the great 6A comeback wins in Kansas history. He always respectful towards the Officials and the game of football. I'll miss Coach Prudy, was one of the best!

Our prayers and thoughts go out to the Purdy family, especially Brian who I have the pleasure of working with at Audacy Radio Dallas for over the past 5 years. Also a son of a very successful high school coach, it was neat to know that Brian and I shared a special kinship with our fathers and we were able to reap the benefits of having examples of strong family men, coaches and fathers. I know what a difficult time this is for the family after losing my dad almost 4 years ago but always look back at the good times we had and I know that the Purdy family is doing the same which brings some comfort at this difficult time.

It is hard to put into words how much Coach Purdy impacted my life along with thousands of students, players and friends.
I was so fortunate to play for him and then at KU and in the NFL.
Every play on the field and step off the field has been impacted by my time at SMW with Dick.
I know that every person that knew him feels the same way and that we will all have those memories forever.
Thank you, Coach for all you taught us and we are all better because of our time with you as our leader.
Side by side,

My deepest sympathies to Norma and the Purdy family. I have great memories of Dick from the college days when he was a fraternity brother. However, my most dear memories are from the gatherings we Baker grads had the thier lovely home in Green Valley, our dinners together after attending services at their Methodist Church, and their family reunion in Breckenridge, Colorado.

May God bless you and your family in this time of sorrow.
I feel so blessed to be able to say I had the opportunity to play for coach. I have been reminiscing about that season in the fall of 1980, which was his last season at West. A special season for a special coach. I'll cherish those memories forever.

My heart goes out to Norma and the beautiful Purdy Family. Dick was an amazing family man, coach and teacher. My first years of teaching and coaching at S.M. West were highlighted by witnessing Coach Purdy in action. He led by example and was loved by all.

Coach Purdy was a force to be reckoned with when leading Viking football teams to their share of victories on the gridiron in the '70's. When not leading athletes on the field, he was guiding young minds in the ways of understanding numbers, angles, diameters, pi, radiuses, circumferences, learning about shapes and their relationships to one another. And speaking of shapes, I met one of the prettiest girls in high school sitting behind her in his geometry class. Certainly I loved learning, but I had an extra motivation to race to Geometry class early to catch a few words with the really cute girl that sat right in front of me that hour! But back to the tribute... Coach Purdy taught me a lot about respect for others and I'll always remember him for that. He taught us all that winning was fun and that through hard work we could all win at what we chose to do. My condolences to his daughter Pam and the rest of the family and to the friends that knew him throughout his life. In his honor I think I'll wear my Vikings winter stocking cap that I wore to West Friday Night Football games this Sunday for the Bill's v. Chiefs game.

Rest in peace Coach.

Best teacher I ever had. I always remember how he let us know his kid could hit harder than we did. Best Coach I ever had in High School or college.
He led me to Baker Univ. where I played football after attending Jr College. I would never had that opportunity without his blessing.
I had total respect for the Man.
I will always have him to thank for how I lived my life.

Coach Purdy.....
What a wonderful guy!
He was always a gentleman on the sidelines. His teams at SM West and Lawrence were always among the best coached teams in the state...probably explains his numerous state championships.
Not only did I have the distinct honor of reffing all 5 of his state championships at Lawrence, I also had the great privilege of coaching Brian in Ban Johnson.
I have and will continue to miss Coach Purdy. He stood for all that is good and positive for high school athletics.
With great respect,
Bill Fenton

Although no words of sympathy can ease the loss each of you bear, still may you find some comfort in the thought that ALL Baker Delts care. Brother Purdy offered steadfast loyalty and was an influence to all. Blessings. Gary Coleman
