I knew Doug back in 1971 at the University of Illinois @Champaign-Urbana. We worked together in the Office of Instructional Resources. He volunteered to review my master's thesis--page by page ..at his kitchen table with a house full of kids and a new baby. I never forgot that act of kindness and interest in my work. Lost track of him when the whole family left for the adventure in Africa! Ivory Coast.? So sorry to read about his passing. He was a great human being. RIP, Doug.

Doug was an unforgettable person, and my favorite teacher at UMKC. I remember working on a research project with him and making parachutes with his kids. He will be missed.

I have been going through the correspondence of our son Cameron [Cam] North who died 3 years ago of a heart attack, he was an avid collector of movie memorabilia and passionate about silent movies, he felt they were the best ever made. In his things I came across a handwritten letter from Douglas 1993 answering a request from Cameron.
i have no idea what the request was, some kind of photos, he had approached people as Spielberg and Scorese.
Did you want this letter.

Many great memories of Mr. Moore as my 7th grade teacher here in Vermont. I got my introduction to the Birth of a Nation and to Charlie Chaplin on my many trips with him to Goddard College. May God bless.

Dear Suzy,
I knew Doug was very ill and just now heard of his passing. I am so sorry that we lost touch over the years. Doug was a big influence on all of our lives (here in Virginia) and we still remember his films, the film history he taught us and his particular view of life. I will miss him very much.

Doug was a personal favorite of mine in the world of film, and I have been out of town most of the summer, and only just today found out about his passing. Film premieres and showings won't be the same without him! I always laughed at his little station wagon car that was filled with who knows what...but one day he said, Cathy...can you help me identify these marbles and he had a big glass jar of marbles, and we did sit down and identify and separate every one! I enjoyed sitting with him at film premiers because he always had great comments... even if sometimes, he did doze off a few times! lol Still, it was always an honor to sit next to him. I am so sorry I was gone all summer and not aware of the seriousness of his illness...because I just always counted on seeing him again. My love and prayers to his family. Dr. Doug Moore was my film teacher 30 years ago when I was a Communication Studies student at U.M.K.C. He loved film and taught it with a passion. I still remember his ongoing build-up and excitement throughout the semester finally culiminating at the end when he showed us D.W. Griffith's (always said loudly and in his trademark thundering voice) "The Birth of a Nation", an all-time favorite classic of his. He was a memorable teacher who expected a lot from his students. (I'm smiling wondering what kind of corrections he'd be making to my condolence!) I've had many instructors in my life, but Dr. Doug Moore made a lifelong impression.

Kansas Silent Film Festival (Topeka) and Buster Keaton Celebration (Iola) friends will greatly miss Doug at these two yearly events. I do both web sites, and have included tributes on-line to our long-time, dear friend. I enjoyed his smile, his knowledge base concerning silent film, and his collected memorabilia (shared with all in topical displays). It is joy to have known him.

I don't know if I will ever have a teacher as great as Doug Moore again. I took his film class almost 9 years ago and it changed me. I had always loved movies but he made you look at them in a different light. While he worked at Blue River even after I took him class I would stop by when ever possible to see what he thought of the latest films. On the few occasions that I got to go to a sneak preview with him it was great to be able to talk to him about the film right away. I just wish that I would have been able to talk to him one more time. Last summer we talked a few times and like most people I put off calling again because you think you always have time. I will think of him every time I see a new movie. I feel as though in honor of him I should watch A Birth of a Nation because he loved to talk about that move most of all in our class. He will be missed but never forgotten.

I am very sad to hear that this wonderful man has left us, he was a difficult teacher, but a wonderful one in that he pushed his students to try harder and he never settled for our least because he knew our best. I just had a class with Dr.Moore this Spring semester. I hope he rests in peace.

How does one mourn the passing of Doctor Doug? We often hear that life is short, but his passing drives the point home like nothing I have previously experienced. Although I only knew him for 29 years I wish it could have been much longer. It actually feels longer, because Doug brought to the relationship a willingness to gladly share all of his knowledge and experience, of which I only just grazed the surface.
A truly superb teacher, Doug’s near-total absorption in Communications was infectious, as was his love of the film medium – “I never saw a film I didn’t love, including the ones I hate.” Generous almost to a fault, I fear that quality time with his family may have suffered some because of his dedication to, and love for, teaching. I only hope they realize that their loss (though I know he was a great husband and father) was for a greater good, as the lives of the countless people he touched were so deeply enriched.
Finally, while not pushy about it, Doug never hid his love of God, and his life was a testimony to his devotion to “the good life,” right up to the end. On more than one occasion I knew Doug to publicly defend an unpopular person or idea on principle.
So, my tears of mourning are really rather selfish, and I need to make them tears of gratitude for the genuine blessing of having known Doug as a friend – an opportunity which was available to all who met him.
I take heart knowing that, having shed these earthly limitations of time and space, Doug now is having the time of his life freely mingling with his parents, and the others he admired.
In the words of Lennon-McCartney, which Micah shared with us at his father’s memorial: “In my-y-y-y life, I loved you, Moore.” See you at the movies.

I was privileged to know Doug in many guises: teacher, employer, raconteur, father and family man, driving and drinking (not simultaneously) buddy, critic, collector, creative artist, and best of all, friend. He was amazingly talented at all.
As a teacher, he brought so many of his students to a love and understanding of film history and enjoyment of works from all periods. Being with him and his other students/friends at movie conventions are among my fondest memories.
My deepest sympathies to Susie and Jenny, Julie, Amy, Laurel, Shannon, Micah and Noah.

Dear Laurel and William, Susan and Family,
Even though Doug was very ill at Kansas City Hospice House when I visited, he continued to show his sense of humor and concern for others. As I read the many tributes to your dad/husband/grandfather, it was evident that he was admired, loved and respected by many. I'm thankful to have known him, too.
May the Lord comfort you all and give you peace at this difficult time.

Doug was a regular for many years on the Mike Murphy Show at KCMO-AM Radio. He was a joy to listen to because of his command of the English language as well as his knowledge of film. I will always remember and be greatful for his complementary comments about my "clear Midwestern voice" on the radio.
Rest in Peace, my friend.

I only knew the "Professor" for a few years since he began coming into my Hy-Vee Fuel Station. I always enjoyed chatting with him about his antique cars, world travels and how the price of his favorite grenadier cigars were always getting higher and higher. I count him as more than one of my customers, Professor was my friend.

Advance screenings and annual meetings of the KC Film Critics Circle will not be the same without Doug in attendance. His stories are legendary. He was able to pick up small flaws in films be it the period clothing, vintage automobiles, clocks showing different times or even buttons that were undone. His wealth of knowledge concerning films stretched from here to eternity. I will miss his Sunday evening phone calls to get an update on the weekly screenings. His shorthand for Screenland Crossroads was Rigby and AMC Town Center was Nall. He avoided AMC Studio 30 in Olathe and waited for those movies to open in Belton. We will miss and never forget the elder statesman of KC film critics. With love, respect and admiration,
Keith Cohen-"The Movie Guy"
