EDWARD WHISTON Obituary

Edward Glenn Whiston, 87, of Kansas City, MO, passed away Friday, January 14, 2011, at home. Visitation will be 5-8 p.m., on Tuesday, January 18, at McGilley Antioch Chapel on 3325 Northeast Vivion Road. The Rosary will be prayed at 7 p.m. Mass of Christian burial will be at 9 a.m. on Wednesday, January 19, at St. Charles Borromeo Church. Burial will follow the Mass at Resurrection Cemetery. Ed was born October 23, 1923, in Detroit, MI, to Joseph and Irene Whiston. He graduated from Berkley H.S. in 1940, and entered the Army on March 22, 1943, serving in the European theater through the end of WWII and discharged on Nov. 3, 1945. Ed served in the 1st Army Headquarter Corp., earning five Bronze stars for his service in England, Normandy, Northern France, Rhineland, Ardennes, and Central Europe. He later continued serving his country as a Master Sergeant in the Illinois National Guard for three years as well. Following his military service in 1947, Ed pursued a career as an accountant with the Standard Milling Company of Chicago. In 1952, the company transferred him and his young family to Kansas City, Mo., where he remained with the company until his retirement in 1975. Ed advanced his education with an associate's degree in corporate tax accounting from Rockhurst University during this period. Ed married Madelyn Theresa Danca on June 5, 1948 in Chicago at Assention parish, and they began their family of five children, eight grandchildren, and three great grandchildren at present count. Ed contributed to his community as the treasurer of the Village of Oakview and as a board member of the former Sun and Surf neighborhood development swim club for many years. Ed also served on the school board of their parish in the early years of their church's development and growth, and was a member of the Knights of Columbus for more than 55 years. Ed lived this life with an unconditional and selfless dedication to the virtues of his faith, his family and country in a most exemplary and selfless manner. The unassuming nature and humility of his character would surely be embarrassed by this remembrance. However, the truth be known as it is by whom his life has touched would validate the benefits of his exemplary leadership, good deeds and the charitable acts he has accomplished. This space and these lines cannot do justice to the generational lessons and guidance that his life has accomplished. With his parents Joseph and Irene, Ed is preceded in death by his brothers Robert and Marvin and sisters Joyce and Dorothy. He is survived by his wife of 62 years Madelyn, sons Joseph Whiston (Marsha) of Gladstone, Mo. and Glenn Whiston (Jackie) of Kansas City, Mo., daughters Arlene Ballinger (Michael) of Warsaw, Mo., Karen Cosby (Art) of Livingston, TX and Madelyn Ross (John) of Kansas City, Mo., grandchildren Michael Whiston, Laura Young, Jennifer Boyer, Carl Ballinger, Stacy and Kyle Whiston and John Martin and Grace Ross, and two great grandchildren Payton Whiston, Brynn Young and a third on the way. The family wishes to thank the medical professionals from Catholic Community Hospice for their generous and loving care and support through this difficult time. The family respectfully requests that no flowers be sent and that any charitable donations be issued to the Catholic Parish of St. Charles Borromeo or the Catholic Radio station KEXS. Madelyn and family: I was greatly sorrowed at the news of Ed's passing. I remember so vividly those Sunday afternoons playing cards. Those card games meant so much more to me then just cards. Even though I moved away, you and Ed have always been in my thoughts and prayers. God bless you and the family. Dennis and Glenda Stratton
