Eugene Pearce Obituary

Eugene Walker James Pearce, M.D., died February 19 at his home in Merriam, Kansas. He was 82. Dr. Pearce was preceded in death by his brother, Robert. He is survived by his wife, Lunetta Pearce, MD, and his sons, James, of College Station, Texas, and Paul, of Merriam. He is also survived by his brothers, David and Richard, both of St. Louis. Services will be Saturday at 10:00 a.m. at Trinity Lutheran Church, with visitation at the church Friday from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. and Saturday one hour before the service. The family suggests contributions to Alexandra's House, 638 W. 39th Terr., Kansas City, MO 64111 (www.alexandrashouse.com), and Trinity Lutheran Church, 5601 W. 62nd St., Mission, KS 66202 (www.tlcms.org). Dr. Pearce's unique approach to life and work enriched the lives of Kansas City area residents throughout his career. He was a prominent physician in Johnson County for over three decades. He was one of three obstetricians practicing at Shawnee Mission Hospital when it opened in 1962, and he helped guide its growth until he retired from private practice in 1990. Then, at the age of 65, he returned to teaching at the University of Missouri Kansas City Medical School, where he remained until his retirement in 2004. During this period he was active in his church (Trinity Lutheran) and in pro-life issues. He testified before committees of the legislatures of both Missouri and Kansas, and he became a champion of hospice services for families having babies with fatal birth defects. He helped establish Alexandra's House, a perinatal hospice in Kansas City that now serves families from Kansas City and other communities. Online condolences may be expressed at www.amosfamily.com. It is a rare thing to be able to say that you have walked with giants. Dr. Pearce was a giant of a man, moreso in his heart and mind than even in stature. I rarely walk into the operating room without thinking of him, and I treasure the gentle guidance he provided during my residency training. He was a TRUE Renaissance Man, and I will miss him greatly, but will always think of him with fondness and love.

Words cannot express how blessed I am that Dr. Pearce taught me. His kind words and calm demeanor got us through many a night on LDR. He taught us medicine, but he taught us life. I will remember with a smile his knitting on the unit (Still can't make a scarf), and the theatre he shared with us... the price of admission was an informed discussion of the play and social concepts it addressed. Somehow he kept sanity in a time of my life when I was too tired to think. He will be loved, remembered, and missed.

Words are inadequate to say how much I learned from Dr. Pearce as a resident at Truman Medical Center. It was more than medicine that he taught to the residents. I was a proud member of the bow tie club he formed amongst the male residents "You should never trust a surgeon who can't tie a bow tie" was our slogan. Our price for a delicious meal at nice restaraunts around K.C. was showing up in a bow tie we had tied ourselves (often w/ his help). His vast knowledge of ethics, history, and finances was impressive. He started a Sat a.m personal finance mtg group for the residents "Your net worth has no relection on your self worth". He was a remarkable man and I feel blessed to have been acquainted with him.I am a better physician and human being because of Dr. Pearce.

So sorry to hear of your loss. Dr. Pearce was my Doctor for years. He delivered my first daughter when there was only 3 doctors at Smmc. He also delivered my last daughter and my only grandaughter. I remember when I went for a exam with my last child. He said "It's a girl. He will really be missed. I think he was one of the best doctors in this area. I first met him when I was 19 years. Many years have passed since.

A towering, extraordinary, wonderful man. His love of God, life, family, and medicine were amazing. He did life to the fullest and gave to others beyond measure. The world is a much better place because he was here. A doctor beyond comparison because he really cared. Blessings to Lunetta and family.
