JANE M. "DEAN" BEMIS

1920 - 2013

Jane M. Dean Bemis, age 93, passed away the morning of Monday, October 14, 2013 at 8:20 a.m., at the Lakeview Village Care Center. A memorial service will be at the Country Club Congregational Church, 205 W. 65th St., Kansas City, MO 64113, Saturday, October 19, 10 a.m., visitation will follow. Inurnment at Elmwood Cemetery in Fort Madison, Iowa at a later date. Dean was born in Bakersfield, California, on January 8, 1920 to Ted and Burt Maize Dean is survived by her husband Charles S. Bemis; son Charles A. Bemis and wife Cathy of Los Angeles; son Dean Frederick Bemis and wife Claire of St. Charles, Illinois, and grandson Blair Bemis of St. Charles, Illinois. She is preceded in death by her parents, her sister Martha Sherman, and grandson Drew Bemis. Dean attended high school in St. Louis, Missouri, graduating in 1937. She graduated from Washington University in St. Louis, Missouri in 1942 with a bachelor's degree in liberal arts. Dean was a member and served one term as president of Kappa Kappa Gamma sorority while at Washington University. Dean was a member of the P.E.O., and a lifelong member of the Country Club Congregation Church, where she was a greeter and lay reader. Dean married Charles Seth Bemis on June 27, 1943 in Pensacola, Florida, then moved to Norman, Oklahoma (1946), and then to the Kansas City area in 1948. Dean lived in Leawood, Kansas for 40 years, where she enjoyed the social life of loving neighbors and friends. One of her hobbies was knitting Christmas socks for the newborn babies of relatives and friends, 52 in all. Other hobbies include dancing and bridge. Dean was a loving wife and mother and always ready with a smile and concern for others. In lieu of flowers, the family encourages gifts to the Country Club Congregational Church.
