Janet Colleen Case passed away on February 7, 2025, after a long illness that she faced with faith, optimism, and strength. She will be remembered as a devoted daughter, sister, and aunt; a loyal friend and neighbor who would always go the extra mile; and a compassionate "pet parent" to her beloved dogs.
Janet was born and raised in Kansas City, Missouri, and graduated from East High School in 1972. She worked in various data and administrative positions for several local transportation companies, including Tollie Freightways.
Throughout her life, Janet served tirelessly as a church volunteer and Sunday school teacher. She organized and chaperoned countless field trips and activities for the young children in her church. Her rock-solid faith carried her through some tough times, including the deaths of her parents and sister and the many medical challenges she faced.
Janet loved dogs; they were truly the light of her life. She had several Pekingese over the years and named all of them Blackie. Later, she focused on raising rescue dogs and giving them the love and care they deserved but had never received. Any dog adopted by Janet had truly "hit the lottery."
In her final years, she adopted three dogs who became extremely special to her. The first, River (who was found abandoned by a river, hence the name), lived to the ripe old age of 19 and passed a few months after Janet. The second, Jody, passed shortly before Janet.
And then there was Suzie, her last dog. Suzie was rescued from a puppy mill, where she had been severely mistreated. Even though Janet was dealing with serious medical issues at the time, she heard about the tiny, one-eyed dog and immediately adopted her. Janet spent the last months of her life with Suzie on her lap, helping the dog to slowly rebuild her trust in humans and, in Janet's words, "learn how to be a dog again." Mission accomplished: Suzie is now being raised by Janet's nephew and is happy and healthy. She enjoys running around her big front yard and playing with her new dog friends. With Janet's help, she was indeed given a chance to "be a dog again."
Janet has been reunited in Heaven with her beloved parents, Dorothy and James Case; older sister, Suzanne Acord; and brother-in-law, Robert Acord. She is survived by her two nephews, David and Jason Acord.
In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to Pitter Pat Junction, a dog rescue organization that Janet dearly loved and supported (
