Janice Van Gorp Obituary

JANICE "COACH JANICE" NINEMIRE VAN GORP Janice Elaine Ninemire Van Gorp, 46, of Olathe, KS was called home to our Lord on August 18, 2015 at the Olathe Medical Center after suffering a massive brain aneurysm. Funeral services will be held on Saturday, August 22 at 11 AM at the same location. Interment will be immediately following at Johnson County Memorial Gardens. Janice was born on October 12, 1968 in Kansas City, MO to Marilon R. and Charles M. Ninemire. She grew up in Shawnee, KS and graduated from Shawnee Mission High School. Janice received a volleyball and track scholarship from Iowa State University and graduated with a B.A. in English. She also earned an M.A. degree in Education from Baker University and an M.A. in Christian Apologetics from Biola University. Janice was a servant-hearted teacher and an accomplished coach who was committed to excellence in every area of her life. She led the 2002 Shawnee Mission North High School volleyball team to a state championship and guided her 2009 MAVS 12 and under club volleyball team to a national championship. She was a beloved mentor, a joyful competitor, an inspirational role model and a constant source of encouragement for many young girls and their families. Janice most recently served as an English teacher and varsity volleyball coach at Heritage Christian Academy. Janice delighted in her husband and children and was much loved by her extended family and friends. She was a vibrant and passionate person who impacted the lives of many people. Her unique gift of encouragement extended beyond athletics as she was given the ability to see the potential in others and bring out their best. Above all, Janice's passion about life was grounded in her deep love for her Savior. Her greatest desire was to have others know the love of Christ. She was an active member of Colonial Presbyterian Church where she taught Sunday school, and she also served as a volunteer, tutor and mentor for the Women and Family New Life Program at City Union Mission. Janice is survived by her husband, Mark J. Van Gorp, children Rachel L. Van Gorp and Andrew J. Van Gorp, her mother Marilon R. Ninemire, brother Gary L. Ninemire (Tiffany) of Princeton, KS, sister Cheryl Cacioppo (Leo) of Franklin Park, IL, parents-in-law Jacob and Bernice Van Gorp of Pella, IA, sister-in-law Laurie Nieboer (Jim) of Pella, IA, sister-in-law Julie Vande Ree of Grand Rapids, MI, and many nieces, nephews, cousins, aunts and uncles.

Mark, Rachel & Andrew:

We learned of Janice's passing last night while watching the story of the tribute put on by her players at Heritage. Jenny and I are deeply saddened to hear of her passing and wanted to take a moment to wish you well in the months and years to come.

While we were only your neighbors for a short time, it was truly a pleasure to live next to such a loving group. Janice was always there with a smile and welcomed us to the neighborhood with open arms.

We are truly touched reading and watching the stories of how many lives she affected so positively. In life we can hope to touch a few people as our journey goes along, but it is clear that Janice touched MANY lives and that her profound influence on these individuals will carry her spirit here with them forever.

Our Deepest Sympathy,
Jason & Jenny Smith

Janice, "Coach Janice", was my mentor in volleyball through my middle school years. She gave me lessons during the summer even though I didn't play for her club team or go to her school. Janice was open to anyone and was up for a challenge everyday. Fly high Coach!

Janice was my volleyball coach at Shawnee Mission North 20 years ago. I was a freshman there when she began her career. I've never met anyone else like her. She had the energy and determination of ten people. She had the ability to use every single moment to teach and guide us in volleyball and in life. She pushed us to levels of excellence we never dreamed possible, but she never doubted what we could achieve. I am so sorry that she passed and so grateful that I had the chance to know her and learn from her. What a role model. My heart aches for her family. Stay the course and keep focused on the finish line. We will see her again in heaven.

I recruited Janice to Iowa State to play volleyball and had the pleasure of coaching her for 4 years. I have awesome memories of Janice. She was competitive and at the same time compassionate. Her smile and enthusiasm was infectious. She was full of grit and determination. A great teammate, leader and role model. Her mom and dad always graciously hosted our team at their lovely home when we came to play KU or K-State. My thoughts and prayers are with her family and friends at this difficult time.

What a legacy she has left in her time on this earth. I'm sure the Lord greated her with "well done my good and faithful servant". Teaching and coaching is such a rewarding profession, and thank the Lord this became her chosen profession. She planted so many seeds and made a difference in so many lives. Good job little cuz and may you rest in peace and know the seeds you've sewn were exactly your purpose in life along with the fellowship you had with your Lord. Rejoice in His presence.
