Lowell Sharbutt Obituary

Lowell Gerald ("Jerry") Sharbutt

October 13, 1943 - January 3, 2025

Shawnee, Kansas - Jerry was born on October 13, 1943, to Lowell Levi Sharbutt and Dorothy Harrison Sharbutt in Norfolk, Virginia, where Lowell served in the Navy. Two years later, his younger brother Don was born. After the end of World War II, the family moved back to West Texas. Growing up, Jerry and Don got into plenty of mischief riding their horses, biking around on their early morning paper route, camping with the Boy Scouts, and lots of sports. Jerry loved spending time on the family farm with his horse, Marilyn.

The family moved to Overland Park, Kansas when Jerry was in the ninth grade. At about the same time, he became friends with Bobbi Sharbutt through their church. After a few years in college, Jerry joined the Marine Corps, a pivotal move for him. Since he could type and was intelligent, he got assigned to the Judicial branch of the Corps, where he became a legal clerk. He was part of one of the first groups of Marines in Vietnam. After his tour, he was assigned to Marine Headquarters in San Diego, California. He was so proud to have been a Marine.

He and Roberta ("Bobbi") Larson got married in 1967 and daughter Wendy Roberta was born in San Diego the same year. When his enlistment ended they moved to Pittsburg, Kansas, where Jerry finished his bachelor's degree, followed by Law School at the University of Kansas, where he graduated in 1973. The family moved back to Overland Park, and son Jay Gerald was born in 1976.

Jerry showed his love for his children by coaching soccer for both Wendy and Jay. He helped launch one of the first girls soccer teams in Johnson County. He loved coaching soccer and learning about the game!

After years of private law practice in the early 1990s, he joined the Child Support Enforcement team at the Johnson County Courthouse, where he worked until retirement.

He had a lifelong love of biking, and he once biked across Kansas with Jay. Jerry also biked across Wyoming 3 times, once with nephew Davin Larson. They also biked across Nebraska together. He and Bobbi did a bike tour in the U.K. from Oxford to Bath, where he often had to wait for Bobbi to catch up with him. He also loved sailing at Lake Clinton and the Chiefs!

After retirement, he enjoyed traveling in the States, Mexico, and Europe. His greatest source of pride was taking care of his two grandchildren Malachi and Sam when they were little.

During his last years, Dementia became a struggle for him. "The Longest Goodbye" gradually declined his mental health until his death on January 3, 2025.

He leaves behind his loving wife of 57 years, Bobbi Sharbutt, his daughter Wendy, his son Jay, his daughter-in-law Kristy Baughman, and his grandchildren, Sam and Malachi, all of Kansas City. His brother Don and his wife Donna live in the St. Louis area.

There will be a Celebration of his life on Saturday, March 1st from 3:30-5:00 p.m. at the Matt Ross Community Center at 8101 Marty Street, Overland Park.

In place of flowers, the family requests donations to The Deeper Window Association, Leavenworth Dementia Day Program, 729 Pennsylvania Avenue, Leavenworth, Kansas 66048.

Bobbi,
So sorry to hear about Jerry. We worked together at Johnson County Bank. I remember going out to lunch especially Don Chilitos´s. He was a good
friend!

Thanks for posting. I´ve always appreciated your dedicated work teaching and your views on life. My family has struggled with dementia on numerous occasions. I now retired, living in Northern Colorado and traveling frequently to KC to help my brother whose wife has severe dementia. Life is good for Stephanie and I, enjoying Colorado´s mountains and climate. I´m sorry for your loss and know you have strong support from our teaching community.
