She graduated from Barstow School in Kansas City, Stephens College, in Columbia, Missouri, and Finch College in New York. She was a long time member of Trinity Episcopal Church, where she served on the vestry. She was president of Planned Parenthood in Kansas City, and served on the national board of NARAL, an organization devoted to maintaining a woman's right to choose. She was also a founding member of two organizations promoting women's political equality, the Greater Kansas City Women's Political Caucus Endowment and Education Fund and the Missouri Women's Leadership Coalition. In addition to her years of volunteer service, in 1977, Biddy and her daughter Annie founded the Peruvian Connection, a catalogue company dedicated to luxury fiber designs based on ethnographic textiles. Biddy was preceded in death in December by her husband of 60 years, Gordon B. Hurlbut, whom she married on October 4th, 1947 in Tonganoxie, KS. Survivors include three daughters, Corinne Hurlbut, Tonganoxie, Kansas, Hether Smith and her husband Donald, Philadelphia, PA, Annie Zander and her husband Rick, Kansas City, MO, a sister, Helen Sencenbaugh, Scottsdale, AZ, and three granddaughters, Jane and Balie Zander and Sarah Smith. Our hearts are heavy with sadness over the loss of our dear and wonderful friend.
Biddy's enthusiasm and energy was inspiring to everyone around her.
We are forever grateful for the trust and faith that she placed in us.

I was blessed to learn so much about life from Biddy. She was a guide, a mentor, a role model, a surrogate mother, and, most importantly, became a friend. Both she and Gordon were beacons to me of how life should be lived. Although we will never again see that smile in person, it lives in my heart and my life is stronger for having been fortunate enough to grow in her brilliance. My prayers, strength, and thoughts to her family and loved ones on this day and always.

We are all so fortunate to have known her. If this country were a monarchy, she could have been our Queen.

Biddy will be greatly missed and was definitely "one of a kind". However, her legacy will live on through the results of her work with several organizations to improve the lives of women.

Simply irreplacable. My hope is the countless people who's lives she touched will keep what they've gained from Biddy in their hearts and share it with others.

It was my brief honor to have known Biddy, but I am aware that many, many lives have been enriched because of her. She was much loved and will be greatly missed.
